Politics / Senate Forgery: Lawmakers Ready For Showdown With Buhari by quotequote: 1:56pm On Jun 25, 2016
There are strong indications that the National Assembly is on the war path with President Muhammadu Buhari over the prosecution of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, for alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules 2015.
Saturday PUNCHgathered on Friday that although some of the legislators were uncomfortable with the anti-corruption war of the President, the relationship between the two arms of government came to a head with the senate forgery rules suit filed by the Federal Government.
It was learnt that many National Assembly members had concluded plans to frustrate any request by the President because of his anti-graft war.
Besides the senate president, who is standing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, eight senators, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje, and a former Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, are being prosecuted for corruption related offences.
Goje is standing trial at a Federal High Court, Jos, for allegedly awarding contract for the purchase of N1bn dictionaries without due process, while Dariye is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 23-count charge bordering on money laundering and diversion of the state’s ecological fund.
It was gathered that among the plans of the anti-Buhari senators, consisting of members of the Peoples Democratic Party caucus and their others colleagues in the All Progressives Congress sympathetic to Saraki, was to delay approval for Buhari’s appointments.
Investigations bySaturday PUNCHshowed that those who could be affected by the hard stand of the National Assembly included the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, whose appointment had not been confirmed by the Senate.
Others in this category, it was learnt, included ambassadors, who would mainly be politicians. An APC senator, who is sympathetic to Saraki, confided in Saturday PUNCH that the National Assembly would be strict in its oversight functions.
He said, “As part of the measures to reveal to Nigerians that there is corruption in the executive too, we will be strict in screening appointees and in our oversight functions.”
Following the frosty relationship, it was learnt that the lawmakers had vowed to ensure that the principle of separation of powers was enforced between the two arms of government.
One of the Like Mind senators, who preferred anonymity, alleged that the Presidency, in collaboration with some APC leaders, had made up their minds to get Saraki and Ekweremadu out at all costs.
Like Mind senators, consisting of the PDP members and their colleagues that are supporting Saraki, were instrumental to his emergence as senate president last year.
The senator, who spoke withSaturday PUNCH, said, “When the Presidency and some of these party leaders discovered that they could not remove Saraki and Ekweremadu on the floor of the chamber, they are now trying to carry out their agenda using the court.

Politics / Tinubu @64: He’s A Forthright, Deligent, Dogged Politician- Buhari by quotequote: 1:57pm On Mar 28, 2016
As the national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola TInubu marks his 64th birthday, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 29, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari has praised his (Tinubu) doggedness, forthrightness, generosity and diligence.
In his birthday message to Tinubu, President Buhari remarked that Tinubu’s rising political profile since he was elected a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1992 “is a testimony to his forthrightness, diligence and doggedness, the same qualities that had endeared him to the electorate and given him all-round success as a private sector worker, a businessman and two-term Governor of Lagos State.”
Buhari also commended Tinubu’s visionary leadership style, especially for “creating a formidable opposition party in Nigeria that worked vigorously within a short period to oust a party that had been in power for 16 years”.
The President assured Tinubu that his patriotism and commitment to democracy and good governance, and his generous spirit will always be remembered and appreciated by generations of Nigerians.
He prayed that the Almighty God will grant the Asiwaju long life, good health, wisdom and prosperity as he steadfastly supports efforts to promote the development of Nigeria.

Nigeria’s oil industry unions, which staged a strike this month, are pressing the government to prevent oil majors hit by a slump in crude prices from laying off staff, the oil minister said on Wednesday.
The unions held a brief strike two weeks ago after the government unveiled plans to split state oil firm NNPC into different units, part of reforms by President Muhammadu Buhari to end graft in the vital energy industry.
They suspended the action after the government said it would listen to their demands, which they laid out at a meeting with Buhari, their first since the former general was elected a year ago.
“They (unions) are worried about job loss in the sector arising from the position of majors who feel that the economy is giving the rough end of the stick,” said Oil Minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, who attended Wednesday’s meeting.
“And so we are going to be working with the oil majors to ensure that we do not experience the kind of job loss that we are hearing has the potential to occur in the sector,” he told reporters.
Oil majors such as Shell and ENI work with NNPC in joint ventures.
The unions, which were not immediately available for comment, also opposed any job cuts at refineries, which the government is considering selling, Kachikwu said
The unions were also demanding a swift passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill, a project in the works for a decade to overhaul the industry, he added. It will call for environmental, tax and revenues sharing rules.
Kachikwu added the government hoped to end fuel shortages hitting much of the West African nation within two months as the state oil firm tries to restart Nigeria’s outdated refineries.
“Our strategy is that whatever is produced in the refineries will not go for sale, we are going to keep them in the strategic reserve,” he said. “The key problem here is that there is no reserve.”

Politics / I’m Reaching Out To Those Who Defected To APC – PDP Chairman, Sheriff by quotequote: 10:17am On Feb 28, 2016
The Peoples Democratic Party’s National Chairman, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday revealed that he has started reaching out to those who defected from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The former governor of Borno State, however, refused to say if he had also met with the President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki on whether the latter would return to the PDP or not.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Inuwa Bwala in Abuja, Sheriff said the alleged panic in the camp of the ruling party was responsible for the dispute that greeted his appointment.

According to Sheriff, the leadership of the ruling party is aware of his capability to unite the members of the PDP and also bring back those who defected to the APC, hence the controversy.

“We have started reaching out to those who left the PDP and we are discussing already.
“We are getting positive results from them, but we won’t go to the pages of newspapers to announce their names.

“The APC and its leadership are aware that Sheriff has the ability to unite the members of the PDP and also bring back those who have left the party.
“This was why we had the initial controversy on the appointment. But now, we have thrown that behind us as we have resumed work fully,” Bwala said

Governor Nasir El-Rufai,of Kaduna State yesterday said he has created over 125,000 direct jobs in the state within the past nine months.
El-Rufai stated this during his sixth town hall meeting with the people in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area of the state.
He said the state school feeding programme which he introduced created at least 85,000 jobs for food vendors, their staff and supervisors.
“The job impact of ongoing interventions is over 125,000 direct jobs in Kaduna State within less than one year of the APC being in office. The estimates of these include: School feeding programme: at least 85,000 jobs, including the vendors, their staff and supervisors. School uniforms:11,100 jobs, rehabilitation of schools:7,542 jobs, construction of toilets:6,285 jobs, solar boreholes:5,028 jobs, KASTELEA:2,550 jobs, waste collection:6,700 jobs, Science and Maths teachers: 2,300 jobs,” he said.

He said Olam has also decided to build the largest poultry and feed-mill facility in Sub- Saharan Africa in the state.
El-Rufai, who was accompanied by the senator representing Kaduna-North senatorial district, Alhaji Suleiman Hunkuyi and other top government officials on a police helicopter for aerial view of the state, said operations against cattle-rustlers, kidnappers and other criminal gangs are continuing in the affected areas.
“Our security agencies have better vehicles and improved communication infrastructure to respond to threats. Our internal security team, Operation Yaki, has been active in raiding black spots and preventing crimes, while responding more rapidly to robberies and other threats to lives and property.
While thanking security agencies for their efforts and service to our state, we ask our religious and community leaders to continue to preach peace and unity, promote tolerance, discourage hate speech and renew calls for increased vigilance in all our communities, “he said.
He said Stallion Group will build a 10,000-hectare rice farm and mill in Kaduna to reduce the dependence on imported rice.
“Other rice farm and mill projects are being implemented by many firms to utilize our zero-interest loans around the CBN rice anchor lending programme,” he added

Politics / WAEC Registrar Denies Asking Finance Minister To Retake GCSC by quotequote: 10:22am On Feb 25, 2016
The Registrar of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Uyi Uwadiae, has denied reports that he had advised the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, to retake the GCSC examination following her innocuous gaff at the House of Representatives when she gave a wrong answer to the summation of two numbers.
The minister’s gaff set off a social media storm, with some wondering if the minister was qualified for the job, and a report that she had been invited by the WAEC registrar to retake her GCSE exam.
A statement yesterday by the spokesperson of WAEC, Abiodun Aduloju, said: “The attention of The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been drawn to the falsehood going round on some social media attributing to its Registrar, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, comments that constitute a personal insult to the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.
“The publication is worrisome and embarrassing to WAEC, as the registrar did not make the statement credited to him and could not have responded as purported to an allegation in which the name of his organisation was not mentioned.”
Aduloju added that the registrar does not even reside in Nigeria and had not granted a press interview or engaged in an informal chat with any Nigerian media representative or authorised anyone to speak on his behalf concerning the minister’s statement.
“Dr. Uwadiae is an experienced public personality and seasoned diplomat, who holds sacrosanct the entrenched culture of mutual understanding and respect that exists among all operatives and representatives of the governments of the five member countries of the council,” the statement added.
WAEC appealed to the originators, peddlers and transmitters of the provocative and malicious publication to desist from their “dastardly act”, which it said sought to cause disaffection between two notable citizens of Nigeria and destroy the 64-year-old collaboration between WAEC and the Nigerian government.
“We wish to use this opportunity to renew to the Minister of Finance the assurances of the council’s highest consideration and esteem,” the council said

Former Minister’s Son beats up Wife, Locks Her Up In the Bathroom - Pointblanknews.com/

The daughter in-law to Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s female Minister ofstate Foreign Affairs and later state Education, Christina Onwuliri has
accused her mother in-law, Lady Viola Onwuliri of undue interference in the affairs of her home, whereby posing herself as a decision maker before issues of husband and wife would be carried out.

According to her, the former Minister made herself a mini-god in the lives of her male children, particularly her husband, Chukwuemeka Osmond Eleihe Onwuliri which makes it unbearable for their wives to handle family issues without the widowed former Minister’s interference.

Barely five years after their marriage, Christina informed that it’s been war between her, the former minister and son over her undue and unhealthy interference in the relationship of her children’s marriages.

“Since our marriage was contracted, my mother in-law has continually decided what happens in my home, thereby having undue and unhealthy
interference in the relationship with my husband.

“Between 2011 and 2014, while I was living in Port Harcourt with my husband, he physically and mentally abused me. For example, when arguments concerning on way forward in the marriage, he gets infuriated and physically beats me and locks me up in the toilet for as long as he
wishes,” she stated.

As informed, the current happenings which has escalated to the very level of the daughter in-law being locked out of her matrimonial home by her husband after being manhandled and abused by him has been a matter of review before the Nigeria Police and Human Right office in Abuja.

Not only that the former Minister influenced the reason to what made her son to lock his fully married wife out from their matrimonial home, she
also went further to separate the daughter in-law from her two daughters who are of two and three years old through alleged abduction.

“In another interference of my mother in-law, she said that my husband is not obliged to keep me in Canada where we based or elsewhere in the world. And after this encounter with her, my husband told me we will be visiting Nigeria in February. I had no misgivings about it.

“When we arrived to the family house in Owerri, I noticed the presence of a Catholic priest, a serving Honourable member of the State House of
Assembly and few others that I don’t know their names. Later, I noticed that my husband picked up a bag and was leaving without prior information to me. Cautiously, I approached him to know where he was going, but to my greatest surprise, he violently pushed me into a room and locked me up.

“At that point, I saw those men taking my children away without my consent. Then, I started screaming and was helpless but had no option than to start breaking the window panes in the room to get myself out. When they saw I was breaking the glasses, one of the drivers opened the door and I came out shouting for help, and then my children were nowhere to be found.”

Furthermore, she stressed that they equally seized her academic papers, traveling passports, Canadian residential documents alongside her personal belongings. A plan Lady Onwuliri perfectly carried out with the help of the above mentioned cohorts.

Over the failed move by the Nigeria Police to intervene into the matter, she said that the State Commissioner of Police in Imo State withdrew his men from it, even as he tagged it a marital issue that his commission cannot handle.

Sensing foul play in the handling of her case, she called on the Human Right Commission to thoroughly investigate the matter as against running
out of human control.
