New York is a city of contrasts. I was there a few years ago, dreamed of getting there, but was I satisfied? - Not. I was confused and upset by many things there.
Also, where did you visit?
Was there a couple of weeks back for the Nigerian independence celebration. Went through Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx! It was a sight to behold.

If your reasons are cogent, you can apply for an expedited appointment. Read more about "emergency appointment" on the official website where you applied for your appointment.

I was told my resume was seen on Hand5hake, a website were students in US schools find jobs or internships - in my school, mostly on-campus jobs.

That interview was all expense paid, return flight, hotel (cost die, over $200 daily), food and ground transport.

It was moved to the upper week and I did it before heading to Atlanta for the passport renewal.

Overall, it was a great experience and I am still waiting for a feedback from them.

the 6 month rule is for expedited appointment and it still exists. You cannot make an expedited/emergency appointment within 6 months of denial, you can make a normal appointment
I was able to get an expedited appointment after 2 weeks of denial.

18th of July, 2018
The US Embassy in Lagos at Walter Carrington.

My appointment was for 6:30am so I got there before 6. In spite of the rain and chilly weather, I managed to hustle my way to the front of the queue. Did the necessary biometrics and then joined the queue, waiting to be interviewed. As an avid follower of this thread, I had heard gists about the belligerent African-American VO, and I was on the lookout for her. She approved 2 people I knew personally and denied several others from the transcript I saw here. I was hoping not to meet her, but then, I wasn’t scared of her. My confidence was high. I even initiated conversations with the CGI officials and another person on the queue.

I was number four on the line. After a few minutes (what seemed like forever). The VO’s in sight were ready and they were calling on the applicants. A distant voice at Window 2 called out and I went.

Lo and behold, the infamous dark skinned VO. She gave me a super straight look throughout the interview and kept on interrupting even before I completed my statements.

VO: Pass your i20 and your passport
Rex: <Passes> Good morning
VO: So, why are you going for this course?
Rex: Well, there’s so much potential in terms of the availability of renewable energy sources in Nigeria, yet, we're still generating less than 8,000 MW when we should be generating over 180,000 MW. The knowledge of smart grids will equip me with the skills and knowledge I need to exploit the opportunity when I come back to Nigeria.
VO: Okay. Why are you interested in Smart Grids?
Rex: I find Smart Grids part…
VO: Don’t worry. How many schools did you apply to?
Rex: 5
VO: Why did you choose the one you’re going to?
Rex: The major reason why I chose this school was because it offered me an opportunity to carry out research in the area of smart grids with Prof. Junhui Zhao. I will serve as a research assistant in his Smart Grid and Renewable Energy lab and I wil…
VO: Did you take any tests?
Rex: Yes, I did GRE and TOEFL. I ha…
VO: Can I see your scores?
Rex: Passes it
VO: What would this degree do for you?
Rex: A master's degree will help me in my quest to become a professor of electrical engineering at RexCheeng's University as a master's degree is a prerequisite to become a lecturer over there.
It will also equip me with the skills and pragmatic knowledge of smart grids and large scale renewable energy integration- an important area considering the potential benefits Nigeria's power sector stands to enjoy.
VO: Who’s sponsoring you?
Rex: In addition to the scholarship I got, my mum will be sponsoring me
VO: What does she do?
Rex: She’s the manager of RexCheeng ventures
VO: Do you have a bank statement to prove that she can sponsor you?
Rex: Yes I do. Passes it
VO: Types. Scans. Okay, do you know other countries she’s been to outside Africa?
Rex: Yes. Names it
VO: *Types for long* Talks about Putting me on A.P.
Eventually, I got denied even though my document was legit. I lost hope of going for Fall 2018 again until a miracle just occurred and I was able to get an expedited appointment.

3rd of August, The US Embassy at Abuja, Diplomatic Drive.
Appointment was for 10am. Go there a few minutes to 10. The embassy was relatively more organized than and not as rowdy as Lagos.
Was interviewed by the super nice white guy.
Rex: Good morning, I love your Ankara.
VO: Looks askance at me. Please pass your documents.
Rex: <passes>
VO: So, why are you going to the US?
Rex: I’m going to get my master’s degree at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. I will be specializing in Smart Grids and Large Scale Renewable Energy integration into the grid.
VO: Can you name the professor you’ll be working with.
Rex: I’ll be working with Professor Junhui Zhao at the Smart Grids Lab, and this lab is supported by Prof. Emad Manla. Although he’s an adjunct prof. I will be under the supervision of Prof Ali Golbazi, who happens to be the graduate program chair for electrical and electronics department.
VO: When did you get your BSc?
Rex: in November 2016.
VO: Where?
Rex: The University of Lagos
VO: Oh. Unilag?
Rex: Yes. The best university in Nigeria. <Gives a sheepish smile>
VO: <Forced straight face> Who sponsored you in Unilag?
Rex: My mum. And I also got some external scholarships as an undergraduate.
VO: So why do you think you were denied in your last interview? And what has changed?
Rex: I remember that the last thing the former VO asked was relating to my sponsor, so I guess she felt that it wouldn’t suffice. So I approached my uncle who works at CheengRex International to also serve as my sponsor.
VO: Errrr. But from your i20, the scholarship seems to cover a very significant portion. Why do you think you even need your mum to sponsor you?
Rex: That’s also what I thought. But the interviewer didn’t agree earlier, so I just wanted to make sure there’s no lapses.
VO: <Types> Give me a moment.
Rex: Comes back with bunch of white papers
VO: So, I will not be collecting your documents, if you don't live extravagently, you should be fine during your stay in the United States. Listen carefully, this document will explain what you should do when you get to the US. This would explain how you’ll pick up your passport in 3 working days. When are you to resume school?
Rex: August 22
VO: Ok. You still have time. All the best in your studies.

I salute the veterans here! You all made it possible. Tolatof! You're a G! Texrem, thank you!!! Your stories, insight, experiences, are invaluable. Finally, I get Imperiouxx’s beer and Lagosismyhome’s “God bless your new journey.”
To all those who have been denied once; I feel your pain. Sometimes, you might be very well prepared but you just end up unlucky. Please, keep hope alive. Do what is expedient and hope for the best. And the God factor cannot be overemphasized. I never thought I would be saying this but I prayed more than I prepared when I was going for my second interview. Its true that Atheists get visas, pastors and imams get denied (A nun almost got denied while I was waiting). I’m not going to try to explain Leonardo Mlodinow’s Drunkard’s Walk here. Ultimately, you’ll do what works for you and if it pans out, we congratulate you.

Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerte!

Hello boss. If I join a lecturer in my department for a research and we publish, can I classify it as a research publication?

I'm in my 4th year/5th year and I want to write the GRE in December after my IT which I'm currently doing. I would also like to know: If I send send my GRE score to the schools for fall 2020, is it valid?
Hi,
That's exactly what a research publication is. Since you still have the opportunity, make the best of it! You can approach 2 or 3 lecturers in your department and express interest in their ongoing work. Not only will your undergrad project come out stellar, you'll be sure of 3 solid letters of reference.
As regards your GRE, if you have enough time to prepare, I see no reason why you shouldn't write the exam by December. However, I think many schools will still be processing admission for the Fall 2019 window by then. You can always ask the grad admissions cord, they'll have more accurate answers.

Exactly 7:20pm today while I was reading an article on aeon.co, I received an email from Tuft University (that rejected me before), I became irate, as I thought it was a promotional message or message about our school is this or that. So, I wanted to archive the message without reading it.

But when I opened the email I saw this: "I am writing to you with excellent news from Tufts Mechanical Engineering. The school is able to provide a fellowship to offer you a place in our PhD program! A new source of funding was identified by the School."[[/b]b]

As you must already know I started crying. I called my friend already in the program and told him about it.

My story is getting too long.

Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 4.84/5.0
GRE: 315 - Q 163 and V 152.
Tufts University. PhD Mechanical Engineering
Funding: fellowship

Wow! Amazing story. Congratulations.
I don't think anyone will consider your GRE scores low tho. Perhaps, not stellar, definitely not low.

Good day guys, for anyone to go for direct PHD, is it only first class that you needed to have had? Can someone with a 2:1 or 2:2 but with strong profiles in the other areas get into direct PHD?

Different schools have different metrics for accepting PhD students. Your grades are as important as your test scores, your statement of purpose, and recommendations. All in all, they try to ascertain your ability to carry out independent research. If you made a 2:1 or a 2:2, work on other areas of your application. There are people here who received PhD admissions without making a first class, it all depends on how well you portray yourself.
