Health / When Should You Consider Taking HIV Screening? New Study Suggests Ideal Age by RxH8: 9:53pm On Jan 23, 2018
When is the ideal age to go for HIV screening? 18? 25? or 30? That is the question was explored by a study published recently in the Journal of Adolescent Health. According to the authors, the ideal age for persons who are not at risk to go for HIV screening is 25 years. Why? This is because most new HIV infections occur before an individual turns 25. During teenage years and early adulthood, people are more likely to experiment with drugs and behave in a way that puts them at risk. Although everyone is encouraged to get tested, knowing when to go for HIV screening in the absence of symptoms may be a dilemma for some. Furthermore, if a person gets screened too early, the infection may be missed if it is still within the window period.

‘Ponmo’ remains a favourite Nigerian delicacy despite years of public health warning about some of its potentially harmful effects. Would Nigeria’s Ponmo lovers dump the delicacy after watching this short video of an Abuja abattoir? No one really knows. Watch the video which was posted on You Tube by NANTV and lets have your reactions below!

Three years ago, NAN reported the dangers of consuming it, quoting Dr Isuwa Adamu, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), Zaria.

Adamu said consumption of animal hides and skin as meat substitute is dangerous to health.

According to him, scientifically, ponmo does not have any nutritional value to human health.

“In fact, it is not advisable for you to consume ponmo in the sense that some of the animals killed and used for ponmo actually have skin diseases.

“Some of these skin diseases are such that boiling them ordinarily, may not kill the bacteria,’’ Adamu said.

He added that some of the animals killed had been ill and undergoing injections but the rearers went ahead to kill them, leaving the buyers vulnerable to chemicals in the animal skin.

“Some of the animals because of the ailments that they had, are sometimes treated by way of injection with chemicals.

“People don’t allow these chemicals to complete its cycle and be removed from the body; they sometimes go ahead to kill these animals.

“So, if you consume the ponmo, the tendency is that you are consuming the chemicals directly because the skin part of the animal retains most of the harmful substances.”

Health / Re: Can Pesticides In Fruits And Vegetables Make Women Less Likely To Get Pregnant? by RxH8: 3:16pm On Nov 11, 2017
Washing your fruits and veggies may reduce pesticides
The study found only associations between pesticide residue and pregnancy outcomes — not a causal relationship.

The study also has some limitations. For instance, the women’s diets were assessed using self-reports, which leaves room for error, and the women were trying to become pregnant through infertility treatments. More research is needed to determine whether similar findings would emerge among women trying to conceive naturally. Also, more research is needed to connect specific pesticides with the infertility treatment outcomes seen in the study.

In general, the Food and Drug Administration recommends consuming fruits and vegetables for good nutrition but following safe handling tips, including thoroughly washing fresh produce under running water before preparing and eating.

Health / Can Pesticides In Fruits And Vegetables Make Women Less Likely To Get Pregnant? by RxH8: 3:13pm On Nov 11, 2017
A recent study reported an association between pesticides in fruits and the ability of women to become pregnant, raising fresh concerns about the use of pesticides.

The study involved 325 women between 18 and 45 who were undergoing infertility treatment with assisted reproductive technology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the researchers said.

The researchers analyzed each woman’s pesticide exposure by determining whether the fruits and vegetables she consumed had high or low levels of pesticide residues, based on reports from the US Department of Agriculture’s

Some fruits and vegetables with a low amount of pesticide residue include avocados, onions, dried plums or prunes, corn and orange juice. Those with a high amount include fresh plums, peaches, strawberries, spinach and peppers.

The researchers found that, compared with women who ate less than one daily serving of high-pesticide-residue fruits and vegetables, those who ate 2.3 servings or more had 18% lower probability of getting pregnant and 26% lower probability of giving birth to a live baby.

Consuming fruits and vegetables with a high amount of pesticide residue was positively associated with the probability of losing a pregnancy, the researchers found.

“Although we did find that intake of high-pesticide-residue fruits and vegetables were associated to lower reproductive success, intake of low-pesticide-residue fruits and vegetables had the opposite association,” Chiu said.

“A reasonable choice based on these findings is to consume low-pesticide-residue fruits and vegetables instead of high-pesticide-residue ones. Another option is to go organic for the fruits and vegetables known to contain high pesticide residues,” she said. “It is very important to keep in mind that, as far as we are aware, this is the first time that this association is reported, so it is extremely important that our findings are replicated in other studies.”

Health / Health Tip: What You Should Know About Stomach Growling by RxH8: 7:32am On Nov 09, 2017
Stomach growling, rumbling, gurgling and other noises are are inevitable part of life. Have you ever wondered why your stomach growls or rumbles? What can you do to reduce the frequency or volume of such noises?

The sounds you hear come from your abdomen usually occur when foods, liquids, digestive juices or air pass through the stomach and intestines. The sounds re likely to occur during hunger, slow or incomplete digestion, or the consumption of certain foods. Since stomach rumbling is part of digestion, it may not be possible to reduce or prevent the volume of these sounds.

Do you know why the stomach rumbles or growls? This is due to a series of muscular contractions that occur in the intestines to move foods along the bowel during digestion. This movement know as peristalsis ensures that foods are broken down and mixed with enzymes to facilitate absorption of nutrients.

When hungry, enzymes and juices are released in anticipation of foods and these contractions occur too leading noises from the abdomen.

The noises may indicate that digestion is going on. It may also mean that you are hungry. When tense or anxious, loud noises occur because some hormones trigger peristalsis too. However, stomach growling may also suggest that you may have a medical condition such as:

food allergies
food intolerances
gastrointestinal infections
intestinal blockage
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Bleeding ulcers
Medications such as laxatives
