Results, from many polling units in the Southern Local Governments Areas (LGAs) of Kaduna State, and in Some LGAs of Central and Northern Senatorial Zone, indicate an early lead for Governor Patrick Yakowa, the Gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

All over the state, election materials were delivered on time, with accreditation and voting starting on schedule in a peaceful atmosphere. But, in most local government areas, underage voting was reported in some places.

The Governor’s hottest rival is Mallam Haruna Sa’eed Kajuru of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Other contestants are: Senator Ahmed Aruwa, of the All Nigerian peoples Party (ANPP), Alh. Balarabe Musa (former Governor of Kaduna state) of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Sani Shaban of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)

Yakowa told the Press after voting that he was impressed with voters’ turnout and exuded confidence that he would win the election.

“I am happy with the turnout of voters. I encourage all residents of the state to sustain the peace we are enjoying. I want to assure all that we are going to run a government for all when returned to power. And I am confident that the PDP will win again”, he said.

Early reports said Tudun Wada constituency, in Kaduna North LGA, a strong ward of the CPC, was won by the PDP.

Reports had it that Tudun Wada State Constituency went to the PDP with a total votes of 45,233 while the CPC got 38, 318 votes. The ACN, and the ANPP got 3,194 and 2,167 respectively.

In Sabon Gari LGA in Zaria, the PDP is reported to be ahead.

In all the polling units that Vanguard visited in the Southern LGAs of the state, the PDP was leading by very wide margin.

For example, in Zamababo 031 pulling unit, and Magamiya Polling unti 012 in Zangon Kataf LGA, the PDP scored 763; 815 as against 2 and 5, 0 for the CPC, ANPP, and the ACN .

The same is replicated in Jaba, Sanga and Kauru LGAs

In Jema’a LGA, where the CPC had showed a strong outing in the last two elections in Kafanchan Urban ward, the last violence led to mass exodus of voters. Those that are left behind showed a strong voter apathy. The outing was not encouraging.

But, in all, the conduct of last elections was peaceful and calm, up to the time that collation of votes started around 4pm in most collation centres in the state

Accreditation for today's rescheduled polls in Kaduna has already started in some parts of the state.

Our reporter confirms that the process has already started in Banawa area where the turn out is unexpectedly high. There have been speculations that voter turn out may be low because of security concerns.

When the INEC officials were asked why they started early, they responded that they reasoned that since the voters were already on ground in large numbers, they felt there was no point in waiting any longer. They started by 7:30am, they said.

The story is different in Bauchi however. According to Daily trust's Mohammed Ahmed, unlike orevious elections were voters begin to turn up from as early as 5am, today most of the polling units visited so far in the metropolis are relatively deserted even though INEC staffers had been around since 7:00am in most places. There are hopes though that voters will begin to trickle in as the day progresses.

Security presence is reported to be very high in both states.

But even even before the elections Buhari's Campaigns were violent.

People said to be CPC supporters in Gombe had gone on the rampage in the town attacking innocent people.
The Director, Media and Publicity of the PDP Presidential Campaign Camp, Mallam Abba Dabo says the violence was provoked by what he called Buhari’s repeated calls to violence.

He therefore, warned that the ruling party would no longer fold its arms while its supporters were continually assaulted.

His words: “We note with dismay, the wanton and unprovoked violence meted against PDP supporters in Gombe by the followers of CPC Presidential Candidate, General Mohammadu Buhari, and condemn in strongest term this criminal and dangerous behaviour.

“This deliberate act of anarchy, a direct consequence of Buhari’s repeated calls to violence, is an act of provocation against our law abiding supporters, and if not nibbed in the bud, would signal a series of destructive violence nationwide, for which Buhari will be held responsible for unleashing.

“The CPC Presidential Candidate at every opportunity has spared no time, in urging his supporters to take the law into their hands, a reason why everywhere he goes, his campaigns have been trailed by anarchy and mayhem.

“We call on the security to fully investigate the immediate and remote causes and bring to book anyone involved, no matter his position. “Buhari’s recent apology for the actions of his unruly supporters is admission of his guilt and complicity in the series of pre-meditated attacks on our supporters.

“While we commit our party to the pledge of our President for a free, fair and crises-free election in April, we cannot continue to fold our arms as our supporters are continually assaulted.”

Politics / Lamido: Northerners Have Voted Against Sectionalism by sammyzacks(m): 9:30am On Apr 12, 2011
With the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) virtually sweeping the Nation-al Assembly polls in the North-western party of Nigeria, Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State Monday described the development as “a rejection of sectional calls, the manipulation of Northern sentiments and emotions and a vote for national stability”.

But the ripples over the elections continued in many parts of the country Monday, with the result of the controversial Anambra Central Senatorial District finally called in favour of Dr. Chris Ngige of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after initial reports that it had been cancelled.

The Returning Officer for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Alex Anene, emerged at Tourist Garden, Awka, Monday night and declared that Ngige scored 68,208 votes and to beat Prof. Dora Akunyili of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) who scored 68,164.

Anene said no election was cancelled because he had all the EC8 forms for the cancellation, maintaining that no one else could claim to have cancelled the result of any ward or unit. He then declared Ngige winner and disappeared.

Also, the PDP has attained the simple majority figure in the Senate with the results announced so far and is inching towards simple majority in the House of Representatives as well.

Lamido, speaking in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, while presenting the winners of the elections to the people, said that there was massive propaganda that he should be punished and embarrassed at the polls for refusing to toe what was presented as a Northern line in the PDP Primaries last January.

“But as God would have it because I am his creature, the people of Jigawa believed me that I had done nothing to embarrass my religion or harm the interest of the North,” he said.

Lamido had been derisively called “Bishop Lamido” after the PDP presidential primary in January for supporting a Christian (Jonathan) while the PDP has been reportedly presented in the largely Muslim North-west as a “Christian party” in a bid allegedly designed to whip up religious sympathy for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

Politics / The Crimes Of Buhari - Wole Soyinka by sammyzacks(m): 2:29pm On Apr 04, 2011
The grounds on which General Buhari is being promoted as the alternative choice are not only shaky, but pitifully naive. History matters. Records are not kept simply to assist the weakness of memory, but to operate as guides to the future. Of course, we know that human beings change. What the claims of personality change or transformation impose on us is a rigorous inspection of the evidence, not wishful speculation or behind-the-scenes assurances. Public offence, crimes against a polity, must be answered in the public space, not in caucuses of bargaining. In Buhari, we have been offered no evidence of the sheerest prospect of change. On the contrary, all evident suggests that this is one individual who remains convinced that this is one ex-ruler that the nation cannot call to order.

Buhari – need one remind anyone - was one of the generals who treated a Commission of Enquiry, the Oputa Panel, with unconcealed disdain. Like Babangida and Abdusalami, he refused to put in appearance even though complaints that were tabled against him involved a career of gross abuses of power and blatant assault on the fundamental human rights of the Nigerian citizenry.

Prominent against these charges was an act that amounted to nothing less than judicial murder, the execution of a citizen under a retroactive decree. Does Decree 20 ring a bell? If not, then, perhaps the names of three youths - Lawal Ojuolape (30), Bernard Ogedengbe (29) and Bartholomew Owoh (26) do. To put it quite plainly, one of those three – Ogedengbe - was executed for a crime that did not carry a capital forfeit at the time it was committed. This was an unconscionable crime, carried out in defiance of the pleas and protests of nearly every sector of the Nigerian and international community – religious, civil rights, political, trade unions etc. Buhari and his sidekick and his partner-in-crime, Tunde Idiagbon persisted in this inhuman act for one reason and one reason only: to place Nigerians on notice that they were now under an iron, inflexible rule, under governance by fear.

So Tai Solarin is already forgotten? Tai who stood at street corners, fearlessly distributing leaflets that took up the gauntlet where the media had dropped it. Tai who was incarcerated by that regime and denied even the medication for his asthmatic condition? Tai did not ask to be sent for treatment overseas; all he asked was his traditional medicine that had proved so effective after years of struggle with asthma!

Nor must we omit the manner of Buhari coming to power and the pattern of his ‘corrective’ rule. Shagari’s NPN had already run out of steam and was near universally detested – except of course by the handful that still benefited from that regime of profligacy and rabid fascism. Responsibility for the national condition lay squarely at the door of the ruling party, obviously, but against whom was Buhari’s coup staged? Judging by the conduct of that regime, it was not against Shagari’s government but against the opposition. The head of government, on whom primary responsibility lay, was Shehu Shagari. Yet that individual was kept in cozy house detention in Ikoyi while his powerless deputy, Alex Ekwueme, was locked up in Kiri-kiri prisons. Such was the Buhari notion of equitable apportionment of guilt and/or responsibility.

And then the cascade of escapes of the wanted, and culpable politicians. Manhunts across the length and breadth of the nation, roadblocks everywhere and borders tight as steel zip locks. Lo and behold, the chairman of the party, Chief Akinloye, strolled out coolly across the border. Richard Akinjide, Legal Protector of the ruling party, slipped out with equal ease. The Rice Minister, Umaru Dikko, who declared that Nigerians were yet to eat from dustbins - escaped through the same airtight dragnet. The clumsy attempt to crate him home was punishment for his ingratitude, since he went berserk when, after waiting in vain, he concluded that the coup had not been staged, after all, for the immediate consolidation of the party of extreme right-wing vultures, but for the military hyenas.

The case of the overbearing Secretary-General of the party, Uba Ahmed, was even more noxious. Uba Ahmed was out of the country at the time. Despite the closure of the Nigerian airspace, he compelled the pilot of his plane to demand special landing permission, since his passenger load included the almighty Uba Ahmed. Of course, he had not known of the change in his status since he was airborne. The delighted airport commandant, realizing that he had a much valued fish swimming willingly into a waiting net, approved the request. Uba Ahmed disembarked into the arms of a military guard and was promptly clamped in detention. Incredibly, he vanished a few days after and reappeared in safety overseas. Those whose memories have become calcified should explore the media coverage of that saga. Buhari was asked to explain the vanished act of this much prized quarry and his response was one of the most arrogant levity. Coming from one who had shot his way into power on the slogan of ‘dis’pline’, it was nothing short of impudent.

Shall we revisit the tragicomic series of trials that landed several politicians several lifetimes in prison? Recall, if you please, the ‘judicial’ processes undergone by the septuagenarian Chief Adekunle Ajasin. He was arraigned and tried before Buhari’s punitive tribunal but acquitted. Dissatisfied, Buhari ordered his re-trial. Again, the Tribunal could not find this man guilty of a single crime, so once again he was returned for trial, only to be acquitted of all charges of corruption or abuse of office. Was Chief Ajasin thereby released? No! He was ordered detained indefinitely, simply for the crime of winning an election and refusing to knuckle under Shagari’s reign of terror.

The conduct of the Buhari regime after his coup was not merely one of double, triple, multiple standards but a cynical travesty of justice. Audu Ogbeh, currently chairman of the Action Congress was one of the few figures of rectitude within the NPN. Just as he has done in recent times with the PDP, he played the role of an internal critic and reformer, warning, dissenting, and setting an example of probity within his ministry. For that crime he spent months in unjust incarceration. Guilty by association? Well, if that was the motivating yardstick of the administration of the Buhari justice, then it was most selectively applied. The utmost severity of the Buhari-Idiagbon justice was especially reserved either for the opposition in general, or for those within the ruling party who had showed the sheerest sense of responsibility and patriotism.

One is only too aware that some Nigerians love to point to Buhari’s agenda of discipline as the shining jewel in his scrap-iron crown. To inculcate discipline however, one must lead by example, obeying laws set down as guides to public probity. Example speaks louder than declarations, and rulers cannot exempt themselves from the disciplinary strictures imposed on the overall polity, especially on any issue that seeks to establish a policy for public well-being. The story of the thirty something suitcases – it would appear that they were even closer to fifty - found unavoidable mention in my recent memoirs, YOU MUST SET FORTH AT DOWN, written long before Buhari became spoken of as a credible candidate. For the exercise of a changeover of the national currency, the Nigerian borders – air, sea and land – had been shut tight. Nothing was supposed to move in or out, not even cattle egrets.

Yet a prominent camel was allowed through that needle’s eye. Not only did Buhari dispatch his aide-de-camp, Jokolo – later to become an emir - to facilitate the entry of those cases, he ordered the redeployment – as I later discovered - of the Customs Officer who stood firmly against the entry of the contravening baggage. That officer, the incumbent Vice-president is now a rival candidate to Buhari, but has somehow, in the meantime, earned a reputation that totally contradicts his conduct at the time. Wherever the truth lies, it does not redound to the credibility of the dictator of that time, General Buhari whose word was law, but whose allegiances were clearly negotiable.

Politics / There Is Nothing Wrong With Buhari, But His Surroundings. by sammyzacks(m): 8:36am On Mar 21, 2011
“Actually, there is nothing wrong with General Muhammadu Buhari, but there is everything wrong with his surroundings. It is very unfortunate that Buhari is surrounded by only unscrupulous people-some of them are the people he detained in Kirikiri when he was the military head of state because they had looted their state’s treasury. But still, you still find them around him. They have pinned him down like a prisoner. He only does what they plan for him.

“So, where do we go from here? You can imagine somebody like his lawyer, Mike Ahamba who has been with him for the past eight years has now opted out completely, he said there is no internal democracy in house. You can imagine there are complaints in the ward congresses and primaries of CPC even in states where General Buhari is popular? There are complaints everywhere that somebody got the highest votes, but the name was changed at the head office of the party. And so many cases are now in court.

So, it is only innocent masses in certain strategic locations that like Buhari, but not those who surround him who are after themselves, what they will get or after what they will become. So, if today, you forget about the election and just take Buhari and put him in Aso Rock and say you are president, with these people around him, he cannot do anything. After all, Buhari is a trained officer, not a politician; he is still in the learning process of politics. But tell me if there is anybody around him now who is a politician to the core? Secondly, there is nobody that is honest around him, even, their own people are complaining against them.”

He was equally unsparing of the PDP presidential candidate and incumbent president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, Daiyabu whose administration he described as “a complete failure. The entire PDP, not minus anybody is a total failure; they are looters of our treasury. They have generated revenue beyond whatever Nigeria has ever generated, but where are we now? So, that is the situation in which Nigeria is and all hands must be on deck to fight, no matter who is involved.’’

Daiyabu, however admonished Nigerians to rise up to the challenge and partake in the struggle to redeem the nation. ’’The masses are the most powerful. If only the masses will wake up from their slumber and listen to us properly and act appropriately, if they will come out to demonstrate persistently that there must be total recovery of the loot and the provision of the social security scheme for all Nigerians, it will be done.

Politics / Ribadu Stands A Better Cahnce With Ngozi Okonje-nweala As Running Mate. by sammyzacks(m): 8:51am On Feb 14, 2011
Leader of the ACN, Senator Bola Tinubu had been engrossed in disagreement with Ribadu over the choice of a running mate to the presidential standard bearer. While the former Lagos State governor was said to be favourably disposed to the choice of former minister of finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonje-Nweala as running mate to Mallam Ribadu, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had remained resolute, insisting that he should be given the free hand to choose his running mate.

It was the same scenario that emerged immediately after the emergence of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as presidential candidate of the ACN during which he insisted on being allowed to choose those he would work with as members of his campaign team. He got his way.

However, at a meeting which took place last Thursday, at the national headquarters of ACN situated at Wuse II, Abuja and chaired by the party’s National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, it was agreed that the brewing crisis between Tinubu and Ribadu would not augur well for the party and in particular Mallam Ribadu.

He claimed that Abubakar expresed his displeasure with the congratulatory letter Babangida sent to the President for winning the primaries.

Abubakar, it was further learnt, felt that that it was too early for Babangida to have written such a letter without hearing from other pro-zoning aspirants.

The source said, “Abubakar felt betrayed that Babangida could do such a thing without his knowledge since he was personally at the venue of the primaries.

“He also felt that since all of them took a position on zoning together, which was one of the campaign topics of the group, he should then have waited for them to meet and take a common stand.”

However, the former military dictator was said to have defended himself by saying that he took his decision in order not to heat up the polity and that he was old enough to know what was good for him.

“I, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, wish to congratulate President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR for his landslide victory at yesterday’s presidential primaries of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

“His victory at the primaries is not only personal, but to all members of our great party, to lovers of peace, unity and progress; and to all those who believe in democracy and Nigeria. I therefore urge him to be magnanimous in victory and carry along with him those who lost at yesterday’s event. This is the only way we can bury the intra-party differences and bitterness that preceded the primaries.

“Special congratulations to former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar GCON, on putting up a gallant fight and braving all the odds to make an impressive showing at the primaries. History will always give him a place of pride for his tireless efforts to enthrone democracy in Nigeria.

“My admiration also goes to the woman of substance and courage who never gives up – Mrs Sarah Jibril- who has since 1993 sought at every opportunity to offer her services as president of this country. Even though she has not succeeded, history will one day say this is the woman who saw tomorrow when eventually Nigeria elects a woman president.”

Politics / How Atiku Wired $40m To Us by sammyzacks(m): 9:15am On Jan 13, 2011
ONE of the Presidential hopefuls on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the coming Presidential Primary of the party slated for January 13 in Abuja, former Vice President Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has been found to be an offender in the United States of America (US), and the information seems to have emanated at about the wrong time in what is now becoming a hotly pursuit Presidential Primary race between the ex-customs boss and the serving President, Dr, Goodluck Jonathan. The damning document is the final outcome of series of investigations and hearings carried out by the United States Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, headed by Senator Carl Levin, Chairman and Senator Tom Coburn, Ranking Minority Member. The aim of the investigation was, 'Keeping Foreign Corruption Out of the United States' and it was released last year February.

Unpalatable revelation
The case of Alhaji Abubakar Atiku was among four other case studies cited under, 'Foreign Corruption and Money Laundering'. His portion gulped a total of 69 pages and is entitled, 'Abubakar Case Study: Using Offshore Companies to Bring Suspect Funds into the United States'.
The trust of the indictment is that the popular politician fondly referred to as 'Turaki' funnelled approximately $40million to the US through his wife, Jennifer.
The finding revealed that Jennifer Douglas Abubakar, a U.S. citizen, is the fourth wife of Atiku Abubakar. The Committee examined how, from 2000 to 2008, Ms. Douglas helped her husband bring over $40 million in suspect funds into the United States, including at least $1.7 million in bribe payments from Siemens AG, a German corporation, and over $38 million from little known offshore corporations, primarily LetsGo Limited Inc., Guernsey Trust Company Nigeria Limited, and Sima Holding Limited.
The report showed that over half of the suspect funds, nearly $25 million, were wire transferred by the offshore corporations into U.S. bank accounts opened by Ms. Douglas. For most of the time period examined, the U.S. banks with those accounts were unaware of Ms. Douglas' PEP status, and allowed multiple large wire transfers into her accounts from the offshore corporations. As, over time, each of the banks began to question the wire transfers into her accounts, Ms. Douglas indicated that all of the funds came from her husband and professed little familiarity with the offshore corporations actually sending her money.
Bank records indicated that Ms. Douglas used most of the funds placed into her accounts to support a lavish lifestyle in the United States, paying credit card bills and household expenses in the range of $10,000 to $90,000 per month, including substantial legal and accounting bills. She also transferred funds to accounts she opened for the Gede Foundation, a nonprofit corporation she established in 2002, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), a university that Abubakar founded in 2003, and whose name reflects its association with American University in the United States.
An additional $14 million of the suspect funds were wire transferred by two of the offshore corporations, LetsGo and the Guernsey Trust Company, to American University to pay for consulting fees related to AUN. American University officials told the Subcommittee that they understood the funds came from Abubakar and never inquired why the wire transfers were sent by unfamiliar offshore corporations. At least another $2.1 million was wire transferred by the Guernsey Trust Corporation to accounts controlled by Edward Weidenfeld, a U.S. lawyer who provided legal services to Ms. Douglas, Abubakar, and AUN. Mr. Weidenfeld explained that the funds paid for the Abubakars' legal expenses and an account set up for AUN, and that he had assumed the funds came from Abubakar.
The report noted that over the years, questions have been raised about the source of Abubakar's wealth. He spent twenty years in the Nigerian Customs Service, and then worked in the private sector for ten years, before serving as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007.

Politics / Bomb Blasts, Violence: Sss To Quiz Buhari, Ibb, Atiku, Others by sammyzacks(m): 9:13am On Jan 13, 2011
AS part of efforts to discharge a recent Presidential “marching order” for an immediate stemming of the tide of bomb blasts and violence in the country, the State Security Service (SSS) might have directed its searchlight on certain political and fanatical leaders, National Daily Intelligence can reveal.

Top on the list of leaders who might become “visitors” at the National office of the SSS in Abuja, any moment from now, are those considered “popular and powerful” under the on-going dispensation, in the country.
Among them are three presidential hopefuls, Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Political Change (CPC), Ibrahim Babangida and Atiku Abubakar, both of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
,
There are indications that the concern of security operatives about Buhari may have revolved around his seeming coloration as an “Islamic symbol,” in the country, an issue that was alleged to have been considered “not comfortable to the on-going obduracy being exhibited by the deadly Boko Haram sect, which had claimed responsibility for certain insurgency in parts of the North, especially Maiduguri, in Borno State.
It was reliably gathered that based on the presidential directive, the nation's security agencies might have vowed “to be more daring in their daily operational tactics,” as against the previous tendency to avoid heating up the policy, which was regarded as a “weakness.”
Dependable sources hinted that the looming interrogation would be used to unravel the culpability or otherwise of the affected leaders in the new wave of violence and bombings in the country.
