Celebrities / Fresh Facts Emerge Over Omah Lay’s Arrest In Uganda by samueloduoye(m): 12:13pm On Dec 15, 2020
Fast-rising Nigerian singer, Omah Lay, and vocalist, Tems were on Sunday arrested by the police in Uganda over alleged violation of Covid-19 regulations.

However, Bobi Wine, Ugandan singer turned politician, has described the arrest of Omah Lay, in his country as an “act of shame by a corrupt regime operating double standards”.

The arrest has raised intense controversies on social media platforms with many Nigerians, including celebrities, calling for their release from the custody of Ugandan police.

Taking to his Twitter page to join the call for Omah Lay’s release, Wine said, “truth is Omah Lay‘s arrest isn’t about COVID. No! It’s an act of shame by a corrupt regime that operates on double standards.”

“He obtained a work permit & performed under police protection! Why arrest him? This as pro-Museveni artists stage street concerts unmolested!”

Omah Lay and Tems have been remanded in police custody until December 16, 2020.

Politics / Women Politics In Kogi Is Different From Everywhere Else In Nigeria by samueloduoye(m): 11:42am On Dec 15, 2020
Women’s inclusion in politics has long been a subject of debate in Nigeria. With a vast majority of political and leadership positions occupied by men, the country would rank among the countries providing little to no opportunities for women to take leadership.

To corroborate this, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), recently placed Nigeria as the 185 out of 193 countries on percentage of women in national parliaments.

However, Yayaha Bello, the governor of Kogi state seem to be changing this curve.

Kogi has 21 Local Government Areas, and at the moment, the vice-chairperson position of the legislative seats at the 21 local government (LG) councils is taken by women.

Speaking on this before the LGA elections earlier in December, Edward Onoja, deputy governor of Kogi, was quoted as saying, “we have several chairs of boards as women and just recently, our party, the All Progressives Congress is lining up 21 women as vice-chairperson candidates for the 21 local governments in Kogi state.”

Also, for the first time in the history of Nigeria, a female officer has been appointed as aide-de-camp (ADC) to a governor. This followed the deployment of Ifeoma Akaya to serve as the ADC to the Kogi governor.

Crime / How Osun Student Died In SARS Detention, Police Withhold Corpse Since 2008 by samueloduoye(m): 4:05am On Dec 14, 2020
One Taiwo Daniel has petitioned the panel investigating police brutality in Osun State over the death of his son, Batatunde, in the hands of the police.

The Justice Akin Oladimeji (retd.)-led panel was asked to investigate the roles played by former Commander of Ilesa Area Command of Nigeria Police Force, Mr Joshua Atunise in Babatunde’s death..

Speaking to the panel on Saturday, Daniel explained that the victim, was a Higher National Diploma Mechanical Engineering student at the Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, and his colleagues were arrested at Ilo Ijesa, Osun State, on November 28 by the police.

He explained that his son was called by some of his colleagues in the campus-based paramilitary group, Cadet Corps after they were detained at Ilo Ijesa by police while returning from an event.

Being their commandant, Babatunde went there and was arrested and labelled armed robbers along with colleagues by the police.

Despite their plea, the policemen only allowed them to go on the condition that Babatunde would pay N30,000.

Politics / Whether Oshiomhole Stays Or Not, Here Is Why APC May Still Collapse by samueloduoye(m): 6:18pm On Dec 18, 2019
For a while now, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been battling with internal rancour, as many state governors are against the national chairman of the ruling party, Adams Oshiomhole. While some accuse him of leading the party to destruction, others claim that his high-handedness is just intolerable.

But still, he has the support of the Presidency and many key stakeholders in the party, who don’t fret over the possibility of the APC collapsing under him. In fact, the Osun State Chairman of the party, Gboyega Famoodun, recently noted that most of his colleagues supported for Oshiomhole, to save the party from disintegration.

Business / Sentiment Aside, Air Peace CEO Has To Prove His Innocence by samueloduoye(m): 12:11pm On Nov 29, 2019
Since the fraud allegations against Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, came to public knowledge, most Nigerians have been wondering how to react to it. Just a few weeks ago, Onyema was a national hero, who brought home our people from South Africa during the xenophobic attacks. How do we label such person a fraudster just like that?

In fact, we had an article about his patriotism, and the need for more wealthy Nigerians to be like him. While a divide is now calling for his prosecution, many others ask President Buhari to protect ‘our hero.’

According to the US authorities, Onyema moved more than $20 million from Nigeria through US bank accounts in a scheme involving “false documents” based on the purchase of aeroplanes. He was indicted alongside Ejiroghene Eghagha, Air Peace’s chief of administration and finance. There’s already an arrest warrant for him.

That means Nigeria can decide to extradite him to the US to face the charges. However, before anyone in government could speak, an Abuja-based lawyer has asked the court to bar the federal government from harassing, inviting or arresting Onyema.

Politics / Hammed Ali: The Second Strongman Of Buhari’s Presidency by samueloduoye(m): 3:41am On Nov 15, 2019
On Wednesday, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali, refused to honour an invite by the House of Representatives over the extrajudicial killings by men of the service in Ogun State border towns. For many people who have been following political developments involving Ali since 2015, this won’t be a surprise.

Earlier in the week, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Sikirat Ajibola, representing Idiroko/Ipokia State Constituency, had petitioned the federal parliament over the alleged illegal activities by men of the NCS.

The House had referred the petition to the Committee on Public Petitions, which held its investigative hearing on Wednesday where the Customs boss was expected to appear.

Crime / Human Trafficking May Soon Hit Northern Nigeria by samueloduoye(m): 5:30am On Nov 12, 2019
Cases of kidnapping are more rampant in Nigeria now, more than ever. However, the most surprising is the sudden surge of such incidents in the North. We used to know of Boko Haram as the major challenge in the region, but now, kidnapping has become even more worrisome.

From school kids to politicians and religious leaders, no one is excepted from the radar of these criminals. But when it involves young ones, the indication is that the problem here may be more about parenting and childcare.

Crime / Pastors, Imams Also Deserve 14-year Jail For Sexual Harassment by samueloduoye(m): 2:59pm On Nov 08, 2019
Yesterday, the sexual harassment bill passed the second reading at the Senate. This means that we can expect a law protecting Nigerians against unwanted sexual advances, in a matter of weeks.

While the bill did its best to address such issues in higher institutions, it, unfortunately, exempted issues of sexual abuse that could arise in worship centres. Not just that, offenders in primary and secondary schools are also not covered.

According to the bill, which was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, there is provision for up to 14-year jail term, without an option of fine, for any academic who commits sexual offences in tertiary institutions.

Politics / Does FG Wants Nigerians To Stop Getting Married? by samueloduoye(m): 3:54pm On Nov 06, 2019
It appears the Federal Government is taking deliberate steps to frustrate the process of getting married in Nigeria, for reasons best known to it. For a while now, there have been disagreements over which institution has the right to officiate weddings.

Now again, the FG, through the Ministry of Interior, has published the marriage registries and places it has licensed to conduct statutory marriage across the country. Its argument is that it was the only tier of government permitted by the constitution to regulate and conduct marriages.

Politics / Inside Gombe Schools Where Pupils Learn Without Furniture Or Classrooms by samueloduoye(m): 8:47pm On Oct 31, 2019
We’ve always known that Nigeria needs to do more to improve education, from the basic level to tertiary. It’s a general challenge. However, the case in the north is a peculiar one. One would wonder what the political leaders here have been doing with annual budgets all these years.

According to a media report on Thursday, some schools in Gombe state, with hundreds of pupils, offer classes under the trees. And where there are classrooms, it’s not a place an average Nigerian would want to learn at.

Politics / N250bn Loan For Lagos: What Is Governor Sanwo-olu Up To? by samueloduoye(m): 6:00pm On Oct 29, 2019
Lagos is among the richest of Nigeria’s 36 states. However, when the media reported that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu wants to raise some ₦250 billion loan, it raised eyebrows.

In his letter to the state’s assembly, Sanwo-Olu had given his reasons as lack of revenue for the remaining months of the year, and not being in a position to propose a supplementary budget.

The idea of getting a loan is actually not the problem, but the fact that Lagos has gotten nothing to show for its decade-long indebtedness. It’s a supposedly wealthy state, but still, the debt level is among the highest in Nigeria.

Education / Why Is ASUU Afraid Of Becoming Accountable? by samueloduoye(m): 5:28pm On Oct 28, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) owes Nigerians an explanation for its fight with the Federal Government when all the FG is doing is promoting accountability in its payment system.

The FG has insisted that every of its worker must be registered under the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPSS), to be qualified for payment.

But the ASUU had insisted that lecturers in the nation’s universities must be exempted, just because that’s the way it used to be. The argument was that lecturers won’t be rightly captured, as opposed to the conventional approach, where lecturers enjoy a level of independence in payment modalities.

Politics / Where Are The Abuja’s $460m CCTV Cameras? by samueloduoye(m): 6:40pm On Oct 25, 2019
If not for the recent outburst by the House of Representatives on the Abuja’s Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) project, many Nigeria wouldn’t know that we have a $460 million debt, with no single benefit for citizens.

There’s no doubt about this: the cameras, which were installed to help track criminals in the Federal Capital Territory, are now in ruins all over the city. That’s one of the legacies the former administration left for us.

The project, which started in August 2010, was funded through a $600 million credit facility obtained from the Chinese EXIMBANK. It was to be completed in May 2011, but no, it hit the rock. Now, nine years later, we’re still very much in the debt.

Politics / ‘onitsha Fire Incident’ – Has The Government’s Promises Become ‘audio Money? by samueloduoye(m): 5:07am On Oct 25, 2019
Just last Wednesday, five people reportedly died in a tanker fire in Onitsha, Anambra State, including a baby and his mom. Hundreds of building and shops were also destroyed in the inferno.

According to an eyewitness, “Over 500 lock-up shops were gutted by fire on Iweka Street Market leading to Ochanja and Menax markets.

“The incident started when a tanker laden with petrol lost control around Toronto Hospital and veered off the service lane. The tanker fell from the vehicle and went up in flames after spilling its content.”

Following the disaster, government officials at the state and national levels made several promises to the victims. They vowed to help them get back to their normal lives, with the necessary assistance.

However, just as popular singer, Rudeboy, sang that ‘Audio Money’ are financial promises made without any intention to fulfil it, those assurances are now nowhere to be found. Unfortunately, the government is even claiming to have started its promised support.

Politics / What Poor Nigerians Need Is Not Abacha’s $103.64m by samueloduoye(m): 6:03pm On Oct 22, 2019
The Special Adviser to the President on Social Investments, Mrs Maryam Uwais, has said that the Federal Government has been moving the recovered loot of ex-head of state, Sani Abacha, to poor Nigerians.

While it is right that this money is put into good use for the benefit of Nigerians, conditional cash transfers will remain a policy error. It’s high time the Federal Government realise that it takes beyond that to address the plight of poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

Uwais, who spoke on Monday, said the total amount disbursed from the Abacha loot was $76,538,530 and $27,099,028.

Sports / Manchester United Has Lost An Icon In Romelu Lukaku by samueloduoye(m): 4:59pm On Oct 22, 2019
Back in July, Manchester United decided to let go of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan. It was like offloading a burdensome player that has refused to perform up to expectation. But just like Mohammed Salah arrived Liverpool to become a king last season, Lukaku has made his exit a regret for the Red Devils.

He started his impressive display in his first league match against Lecce and has since scored five goals in eight Serie A games since departing Old Trafford. Just last Saturday, he scored a brace last weekend against Sassuolo to keep Inter second in Serie A, one point behind defending champions Juventus, after eight games.

It was a big gamble for Inter’s coach Antonio Conte to have invested around 80 million euros ($89 million) in Lukaku. He had wanted to restore the pairing he composed under the Red Devils’ jersey with Alexis Sanchez.

Politics / President Buhari’s Fresh $3bn World Bank Loan May Be For The Better by samueloduoye(m): 3:44am On Oct 22, 2019
Once we remove the amount Nigeria spends on recurrent expenditure – salaries and personnel cost, our financial capacity as a nation won’t take us anywhere. That means, for many important things to happen, we need extra money.

And if we couldn’t achieve that internally through tax and other means of generating revenue, our last resort is debt. The Federal Government, through the minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has confirmed that the $3bn loan request for the expansion of the power transmission and distribution networks in the industry has been approved by the World Bank.

The idea of taking another loan has been generating various reactions from Nigerians, most of whom opine that this an unnecessary burden on the nation’s economy. While, in many ways, they may be right, it appears to be the only option for us at this point.

Business / Charges For USSD Bank Transactions: MTN Is Taking Its Greed Too Far by samueloduoye(m): 6:33pm On Oct 21, 2019
Over the weekend, MTN Nigeria earned the anger of Nigerians when it rolled out a plan to charge them for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) access to banking services.

In a text message sent to some subscribers, MTN stated, “Yello, please note that from October 21, we will charge ₦4 per 20 seconds for the USSD access to banking services. Thank you.”

If things went their way, this would mean that, even when you try to check your bank account balance, MTN wants to take something away from your airtime. There is absolutely no explanation that would justify that.

Politics / Has APC Forgiven Orji Kalu For His ₦7.6bn Alleged Fraud? by samueloduoye(m): 2:23am On Oct 19, 2019
Former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu, is among politicians who have pitched their tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to escape the rod of the anti-corruption war. It will be remembered that his old colleague, Godswill Akpabio, was moving near jail until he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2018.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly prosecuting Kalu, along with a former state Commissioner for Finance, Udeh Udeogu, and his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, for the alleged fraud on an amended 39 counts.

To bring this to bear, a Network for the Advancement of Good Governance (NAGG) recently protested the delayed trial of the former Abia North Senator. He has been in the EFCC’s net over alleged ₦7.6bn fraud, against them since 12 years ago.

Politics / How Jonathan Ended Farouk Lawan's Political Career For Good by samueloduoye(m): 1:53am On Oct 19, 2019
Until 2013, Farouk Lawan was a Northern politician to fear by Nigerian leaders. As at that time, he was in the House of Representatives, on behalf of a Kano constituency for the fourth term. And by then, he was like the Northern mole in the government against the then president, Goodluck Jonathan.

However, the moment Jonathan realised this, Farouk was allegedly fed with his favourite meal – bribery, which put him in a corner he has never recovered from. Until now, he is still locked in the legal cage.

Aside from billionaire, Femi Otedola testifying against Lawan that he demanded $620,000 as a bribe, a clip of video evidence was also all over the internet. Despite being in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he could not escape Jonathan’s wrath.
