LordIsaac:

I wonder why ASUU had to wait until about a year to the end of this administration, one that has nothing else to fear, before going on this strike. They should have waited till the next administration comes on board.
But that is part of my confusion, APC is behaving like they do not want to win the coming election, perhaps, they believe in the power of rigging embarassed

ASUU should emulate SSANU and suspend the strike now!

An elder who decides to fight with a child, should expect to have himself soaked in the mud.

A dog who fails to heed his master's whistles is bound to get lost in the bush

Excessive pride comes before a fall.

A great ridicule awaits ASUU NEC when her members would begin to revolt against them in the coming weeks. Not every lecturer is happy with this current strike!

Well, from what I heard from one of the branch meetings o, this strike may last till next year unless there is a miracle embarassed embarassed

LordIsaac:

Please, will ASUU emulate them?
Emulate ke cheesy
From what I learnt, ASUU have been having their branch congresses, some will even hold tomorrow, Saturday, but it is just to brief their members about the ridiculous offer from the FG!
I think they said FG offered to increase their salaries by only 18% and most of the other demands are not met by FG, they were told to wait till 2023 for the implementation of the one they met!
Infact, it is like the ASUU strike just began embarassed embarassed
Education / Re: SSANU, NASU, NAAT and FG’s Negotiation Committee to Meet on Friday by sinkhole: 6:46pm On Aug 19, 2022
SSANU has suspended their strike for two months (60days), they will be resuming work on Monday (21st of August, 2022)!
NAAT and NASU are still consulting.
Education / ASUU Strike: Implications Of No-Work-No-Pay For Nigerian Students by sinkhole: 10:08am On Aug 19, 2022
Government 'No Work, No Pay' and Lecturers' No Pay, No Work in Arrears

Minister of Education said lecturers would not be paid their 6 months withheld salaries. It is very unfortunate that the Minister does not understand the operations of the ministry he is heading. The implications are far reaching and I will state some of them here:

1. Spilled-over students whose results are yet to get approval from Senate would not be attended to because these are academic works in arrears (2021/2022 session) that government does not want to pay for. So, no graduation.

2. Final year students who have written exams or yet to write will remain on campus because their scripts will not be marked and the outstanding semester exams will not be conducted. These are academic works in arrears (2021/2022) that government does not want to pay for.

3. For other levels (1 to 3 or to 5), each student should be ready for extra one year or semester as the case may be. If exams have been conducted for second semester, then those students have one semester more. But if results of first semester have not been released, then one extra year. This is because no academic works in arrears would be attended to because government does not want to pay to them.

4. As long as final year students are not graduated, no new intakes and the ripple implication is that JAMB will continue to have backlogs of students waiting to be admitted.

4. The summary of this is that all 2021/2022 session academic works in arrears will not be attended to because they are all works in arrears that government want lecturers to do without without being paid for.

So, it is very unreasonable for government to state that lecturers will not be paid withheld salaries. Lecturers job is not like any ministry job. Adamu Adamu need to get that into his skull.

For parents, stakeholders and students, one does not need to explain further the implications of all this. So, it appears that government is winning the battles but not the war.

I don't know about that. But maybe they agreed to forfeit that.

I want to know something, what good is the Ssanu, Naat and the rest? Why is it that if they're on strike students aren't really interested or overly affected unlike ASUU?.

Shouldn't Ssanu be part of ASUU?
SSANU can not be part of ASUU, because Bursars and Registrars are part of SSANU and those are not academic positions at all, but perhaps, some of them could be part of ASUU, e.g., University Librarian and VC.

Niklaus398:
let ASUU be considerate atleast. The govt has acceded to all their demands they could let this one go or say the govt should pay them 2 months of the 5...that will be better
But, there is one thing that is confusing me embarassed
Is it that the other unions that agreed to FG proposals also agreed to forfeit 3 to 4 months salaries?
Education / Re: SSANU, NASU, NAAT and FG’s Negotiation Committee to Meet on Friday by sinkhole: 4:31pm On Aug 18, 2022
JJuanMiguel:

Lol.
I think this is a new one from the government and i doubt if ASUU anticipated anything like this. I'm certain some of them have taken loans/money from cooperatives and banks in the hope to pay back when they get their backlogs of salaries.
This alone is enough to drag the strike till after election, but the incoming President is surely not a messiah either.
The students are the only looser in the whole rubbish game.
If FG pay ASUU, students will loose.
If FG refused to pay ASUU, students will loose!
Education / Re: SSANU, NASU, NAAT and FG’s Negotiation Committee to Meet on Friday by sinkhole: 4:06pm On Aug 18, 2022
JJuanMiguel:

The way i understand it is that ASUU want the government to pay them now, during the strike not after they've suspended the strike.
Nooo, I don't think that is it o!
FG wants them to accept the "small" salary increament and then resume work with the salaries of the past six months also forfeited! Meaning they will start collecting salary from when they start work again.
Education / Re: SSANU, NASU, NAAT and FG’s Negotiation Committee to Meet on Friday by sinkhole: 3:56pm On Aug 18, 2022
Niklaus398:
Just saw that ASUU is saying the govt should pay them for the 6 months they didn't work for? O wrong na. In this case I stand with the fg.
The whole thing is complicated!
If the witheld salaries are not paid, then ASUU will say that whatever was left undone after the strike will never be completed and that they will just start afresh with a new session!
The implication of this may be, for instance, if you just finished your first semester without result, before the strike, then after resumption, your results will never be released and you will then move to second semester or even start a new session and when you finally graduate, your GPA will not cumulate to the minimum for graduation and you will be forced to spend extra year again!
In summary, every Nigerian Federal University students will automatically defer a session embarassed embarassed

wow ok o.
But I still think the strike wouldn't reach next year. Apc wouldn't risk it with elections coming up next year.
I believe it might just get to end of September or even October and they will call it off.
They understand that millions of students own PVC
I would have loved to agree with you, but the current set of FG do not work with brain! They simply believe in muscle power sad
All the same, I pray along with you that the whole thing does not exceed this year.

If so, when will that be?

As it is now, we are looking at next year in the face!
Did you read the ASUU press release and watch the Adamu's press briefing?

I think they were not really given an offer by FG but why are they having Zonal meetings knowing nothing was presented by Government except plea
From what I was able to gather, on the part of salary increament: if you recall, the FG claimed ASUU demanded for 180% increament. I was able to gather that FG offered between 20 and 25% embarassed

Nothing has been obtained on other demands of ASUU!

I do not think ASUU will agree to just 20 to 25% increament, 100% increament would have been acceptable. Hence, the branches may actually ask FG to make increament 100% or the strike continues!

After listening to ASUU President on Twitter program yesterday (you can listen here: https://twitter.com/i/spaces/1DXxyDqYDnZJM?s=20 ), I have to come to a conclusion that hope seems to be fading for early resumption embarassed but, I will not say that hope is gone yet!
The ASUU Zonal Coordinators will be meeting between today and tomorrow, the meetings may be stepped down to the Branches, if not then whatever information passed to the ZC will definitely filter in.
Guys, I am really sorry to be a breaker of news like this and I have to emphasized that "hope of early resumption seems to be fading presently but not yet completely lost"

The truth is their thoughts and beliefs have nothing to do with the decision taking process
Sure, you are very correct.
I am just pitying the way they're wasting their energy when there is no need to do so smiley
There is time for everything, time to laugh/smile, time to cry and time to be indifferent: the time now is to be indifferent and wait for concrete information before one decide to cry or smile!
