TYRANNY: EFCC DISREGARDS COURT ORDER, ASSAULTS LAWYER

The Uyo Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Friday July 2, 2021 allegedly assaulted a Legal Practitioner and Human Rights Advocate, Barr. Ewa Okpo aka street lawyer at their head office located along Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo.

According to the street lawyer, a Bailiff from the State High Court, Itu division, Usen Ntem, was at the EFCC office to serve an Ex Parte Motion of the Court granting bail to his client on grounds of Fundamental Human Rights.

At the EFCC office, the Court Bailiff was allegedly prevented from exercising his official duties therefore the legal practitioner as an interested party in the case had to go there personally to prevail upon them to honour the order of court and allow the rule of law prevail.

“I have been to that EFCC office over 10 times on this matter and have shown them professional courtesy so far even when my client has been detained for about 10 days as against the statutory 48 hours that the law permits. Nwandu Kalu, Esq,
of the EFCC Legal Department was the one who ordered that I be thrown out of the premises. Messers Taiwo and Gaius witnessed it,” Barr. Ewa said.

“I had to approach the court as a last resort of ensuring that my client gets fair treatment under the law and thankfully Hon. Justice Ntong F. Ntong of the High Court of Akwa Ibom State, Itu Judicial Division granted our plea”, he further stated.

“The bailiff who went to serve them the order of court was prevented from doing so; I had to intervene by going there to prevail on them to honour the court order; I was physically assaulted, harassed, pushed out of the office alongside the Bailiff and terribly embarrassed”, the lawyer lamented.

The Uyo based legal practitioner cum human rights advocate expressed worry over the fate that befalls ordinary citizens in the hands of the EFCC nowadays if a legal practitioner of his standing could be so disdainfully treated by the anti-corruption firm stating that the presupposition of the law that an accused person is deemed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law still holds water in Nigeria and law enforcement agencies are under obligation to abide by it.

He called on them to exhibit professional courtesy to legal practitioners and members of other professions in the discharge of their duties and explained that he had notified the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association of his ordeal and intends to seek redress in court.

Efforts to reach the Uyo Zonal Office Spokesperson of the EFCC proved abortive as at press time.

Essien Udim Local Government Area office of Independence National Electoral Commission INEC has been reported burnt down.

Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Barr. Mike Igini, told the public in a release signed by Festus Okoye, a National Commissioner of the commission.

“The incident occurred in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 2nd May 2021. Our security guard on duty escaped unhurt but the destruction to the building and properties therein was extensive. Items destroyed include 345 ballot boxes, 135 voting cubicles, megaphones, water tanks and office furniture.

“The police, which has also been battling with attacks on its facilities and personnel in the area, is aware of the incident and has commenced investigation.

“It will be recalled that on the eve of the 2019 General Election, our newly constructed prototype LGA office in Ibesikpo Asutan was burnt down while two more offices in Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo LGAS were bombed.

“The recent attack on our facility after we have just concluded the inventory of electoral materials nationwide in readiness for the 2023 General Election is worrisome. If unchecked, these attacks may constitute a setback on the Commission’s preparations, including the ongoing conversion of Voting Points to Polling Units, the forthcoming Continuous Registration of Voters (CVR) exercise and the conduct of polls.

“Nevertheless, the Commission wishes to assure Nigerians that we will leave no stone unturned to recover from the incident in Akwa Ibom State as we continue to prepare for all electoral activities.

Yesterday, Ikono Divisional Police was attacked by alleged IPOB/ESN where two policemen feared death.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the embattled National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) Adams Oshiomhole and his associates came from a background of Armed Robbers to steal the mandate of Rivers people, but were strongly resisted, hence Oshiomhole’s bitterness towards Rivers State.

Governor Wike who stated that he is not a violent politician, emphasised that under no circumstances would Rivers people allow Oshiomhole and his associates rob Rivers mandate.

The Rivers State Governor called for the resignation of Adams Oshiomhole in view of his failure to stop the inauguration of Bayelsa State Governor as he boasted.

He spoke in an interview at the Government House Port Harcourt on Saturday.

He said: “This is a country where you see people who do not have character. Today they sing a song, tomorrow they sing another song. I think Oshiomhole as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress PC is not a character that anybody should associate with.

“First of all I have never been violent and I will never be violent. However, when you see an armed robber come to your house, will you plead with the armed robber and say please I beg you leave my house. People think that armed robbers are only those who cart away people’s money. The worst form of armed robbery is when you steal peoples mandate and just like what Oshiomhole is noted for. He thinks because he’s in the ruling party, he can use security to steal the mandate of the people. He was taught a lesson, a bitter lesson and I want to repeat, if you come to steal our mandate, the people will respond accordingly. They will oppose your stealing of their mandate and so Oshiomhole thinks that because he is in the ruling party nobody should say anything or do anything. Stealing is not only when you go to rob a bank. The worse form of armed robbery is when you steal the mandate of the people. “

Governor Wike described Oshiomhole as a politician without character. He noted that the APC National Chairman is always driven by survival instincts.

He stated that Oshiomhole cannot lay claim to having canvassed for one man, one vote because he is not practising the philosophy.

He noted that he stopped attending the National Economic Council because Oshiomhole turned it into a forum to bash Former President Goodluck Jonathan, when he had gone to praise Jonathan at Aso Villa for ensuring credible elections.

“When Jonathan made sure the election was free and fair, Oshiomhole came to the villa and thanked Jonathan. When Jonathan left office, one of the reason why I don’t go to NEC meeting is because of Oshiomhole. When he was a member. When Jonathan left, there was no day at the NEC meeting Oshiomhole will not bring Jonathan down. Meanwhile, that was the same man Oshiomhole went to praise for allowing one man one vote. But when the man left, Oshiomhole changed. That is his character,” he said.

Governor Wike said that Oshiomhole became Governor through questionable means. He noted that the questionable emergence of Oshiomhole led to constitutional amendment for Governorship Matters to terminate at the Supreme Court.

He said: “Nigerians know one matter that led to the amendment of the electoral act where Governorship election has to go to the Supreme Court is because of the Oshiomhole matter . So he cannot come out and say he was clean in terms of Electoral process. That will be very bad.

Oshiomhole said he fought godfatherism and the same time he wants to install himself as a godfather in Edo state. Why is he fighting Obaseki , because the man doesn’t take instruction from him. He preaches what he doesn’t practice. “

The Rivers State Governor maintained that Oshiomhole lacks the powers to challenge the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.

Governor Wike said that Oshiomhole’s talk questioning his membership of PDP is the unintelligent talk of an illiterate. Governor Wike declared that he is a strong and unrepentant member of the PDP.

He said that he speaks out his mind at all times does not mean that his membership of PDP is in doubt . Governor Wike said that he is not at the same level with Oshiomhole. He noted that what Oshiomhole is doing is to regain the confidence of APC Governors and leaders.

He said: “I will not be a member of their party, I have always been a member of PDP and they know that. Oshiomhole knows that his party does not even score up to 25 percent in my state. He cannot not tell me that . There is a saying in my place. Somebody who has nothing to say ,he says see how you are. So Oshiomhole has nothing to say about me. And I want to tell him that his party is probing him about the so called hospital he says he built. I am not the one.

“So he should face his problems but Shame should be on him that at the end of the day that the PDP Candidate has been sworn in as the governor of Bayelsa state. You can’t come out and open your mouth and say it will never happen . Now it has happened.

“If I were him I will resign, I will leave. I am not his friend , so he cannot say my friend.

How can I be a friend to somebody who will say one thing today , tomorrow he says another thing. In the night he visits so so person, that’s not me. When I want to see you, I see you in the day time. Oshiomhole visits people at night. It is very very unfortunate for him and I pity him. All his efforts to regain his chairmanship has failed.

“All he is doing today is because the governors and some leaders of the party are saying that this man cannot lead our party. Oshiomhole has failed.He is a man who opens his mouth anyhow. . And this should be his last time, the moment he goes further then he will know that Rivers state is not what he thinks it is.

We will tell him where he belongs. I will tell him where he goes in the night, and where he goes in the day time.”

Governor Wike said the former unionist was very corrupt, as he used proceeds from workers to build his political career.

He said: “Oshiomhole claimed he was a unionist. He said he worked in the textile industry. Mention one man who works in the textile industry and is as rich as Oshiomhole today. He used to wear ordinary Khaki, today he wears Safari with diamond buttons. Simply because I said Oshiomhole cannot destabilize this country, who the hell is Oshiomhole to say that nobody can be sworn in when the Supreme Court court has made a pronouncement whether good or bad. “

On Oshiomhole’s parable that he (Oshiomhole) is an antelope, while Governor Wike is a tortoise, the Rivers State Governor stated that his pedigree and education are beyond the embattled APC National Chairman.

He said: “

“It’s unfortunate that Oshiomhole will use that word to say a tortoise challenging an Antelope. Its like saying in a country where Chimpanzee can be anything. How can Oshiomhole compare himself to me. I’m well read. I am lawyer. I am a life bencher. I have my first degree in Political Science and my second degree in Law and I went to the Nigerian law school and I passed very well, Let Oshiomhole tell me which University he attended. As a unionist, he enriched himself. How did he become the Governor of Edo State, who doesn’t know? It’s just the country that we are in people who cannot boast of any certificate can be National Chairman. Let Oshiomhole tell me one University he attended. I attended the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University and served in old Gongola State.

“How dare he open his mouth and called himself an Antelope. Oshiomhole has become an Antelope because he is the National Chairman of a ruling party, Its now a ruling party because they told Nigerian lies. Let Oshiomhole come out and tell us his background except that he became a Governor through a dubious way and that was what led to the amendment of the electoral act that says Governorship matter in terms of the election will not end at the Court of Appeal but will get to the Supreme court. I have become a Local Government Chairman, Chief of Staff, a Minister and a Governor and by the Grace of God a second time serving Governor.

“Oshiomhole has the audacity to say nobody will be sworn in In Bayelsa state causing crisis in the country and nobody wants to call him to order but for people like us in Rivers State . Because of people like Oshiomhole and his style of leadership, his party lost so many areas they ought not to have lost. What made them not to have candidates in Rivers State and Zamfara, its because of Oshiomhole. Oshiomhole led to the problem they have in Bayelsa. Oshiomhole take from two sides. He is not a man of integrity and nobody should take him seriously.”

Governor Wike added: “It is not my position to say it is right or wrong but Oshiomhole cannot open his wide mouth to say it cannot never happen and now it has happened what will he do? Don’t destabilize the country. Don’t cause crisis for this country. You may be closer to the President and that is not the way to retain your position as Chairman of the party because Oshiomhole doesn’t have the support of most of the Governors because of his style of leadership and it is very clear so Oshiomhole doesn’t have the right to tell me that I am a man of violence.

Oshiomhole came from the background of an armed robber to steal the vote of Rivers people and we defended our vote and Oshiomhole is ashamed that we defended our vote and we still defend our vote till tomorrow. Rivers State is not like his State Edo where he can talk to anybody the way he likes. This should be the last time, Oshiomhole should open his mouth and talk to anybody in Rivers State, we are not at the same level in terms of Education. Rivers State is not like Edo state where you bring down a sitting Governor because he wants to install another Governor.it depends on the people of Edo State to allow that , but for Rivers State we not allow anybody who wants to be a godfather.”

BEFORE THE DARK CLOUD FALLS ON AKWA IBOM MEDIA PRACTITIONERS AND OTHER VOCAL AKWA IBOM INDIGENES!

On Monday, men of the Nigerian Police Force opened an unfortunate page in the chapter of the book of intimidation, arrest and detention of Akwa Ibom people on the bidding of politicians by hurriedly arresting and detaining the Chairman, Board of Trusteees of the Independent Newspaper Publishers Association and Publisher of the Guide Newspaper, Prince Emmanuel Sam.

Impeccable inteligence at our disposal reveal that the Police merely acted on the bidding of the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mr Nsima Ekere, who had convinced himself that the only way to ventilate his grievance over the investigative report published by the Guide Newspaper is to clamp down on the publisher using the Police.

We gathered that in the contentious report, the Guide Newspaper had raised cogent questions that caused the claim of the purported attack on Nsima Ekere's residence to fall flat on the face. Mr Nsima Ekere, apparently upset by the cogent questions that the Guide Newspaper had raised in the report which he decided to use the privileges that the office of the Managing Dicrector of NDDC has accorded him to  hound, got an Akwa Ibom son, Emmanuel Sam arrested and detained.

As a coalition, we hereby make the following submissions:

1. In case Mr Ekere is yet to realize, the questions raised in that report published in the Guide Newspaper only mirrored the mindset and questions millions of Akwa Ibom people asked immediately the claim by Mr Nsima Ekere got into public domain. To wit, Akwa Ibom people have asked how possible it is for hoodlums and hired assasins to get past the heavy detachment of combined security operatives (Military Men, DSS operatives, Mobile Policemen, and other security agents) who are always stationed at the residence of the NDDC MD to launch an attack on Mr Ekere? How come there was no gun battle between the attackers and the heavy detachment of security operatives working for Nsima Ekere?  Like Senator John James Udoedeghe had said in a radio interview, Mr Ekere moves around in a convoy heavily populated with Security operatives. These were the questions on the lips of millions of Akwa Ibom people.

2. We will like to remind Mr Ekere that, the position of the Managing Director of NDDC which he is privileged today to occupy was zoned to Akwa Ibom State and not to him as a person. This therefore means that he occupies that position in trust on behalf of the about 6 million Akwa Ibom people. If anything, every thought that comes to his head should bother on how he could use the position to contribute to helping build a more prosperous state for us and our children. But it is apparent that his entire thinking is centered around how he could use the privileges that come with the office to hound, harrass and intimidate Akwa Ibom people in a bid to silent dissenting voices who are only out to speak the truth irrespective of partisan leanings. We recall that Akwa Ibom state has had the likes of Ambassador Sam Edem and Bassey Dan Abia who served as Managing Directors of the same NDDC, and at no time did the two of them descend to this very anti-people level irrespective of the many publications back then that placed their actions and words under public scrutiny. 

3. We hereby alert the world that the life of Mr Emmanuel Sam and that of his family and indeed every Akwa Ibom person, especially the youths are in danger. Intel we have gotten shows that the people who orchestrated Mr Emmanuel Sam's arrest and detention have other dark schemes in their playbook. As things stand, Akwa Ibomites and indeed the world should know that many of their sons and daughters may be cut in their prime just for questioning the claims by these selfish politicians and asking them important questions which exposes their real intentions.

4. Let it be known that as media practitioners, we are united in the task of standing on the side of the people and in solidarity with our colleagues. That singular injury to Mr Emmanuel Sam who we hold in high esteem and who remains a worthy compatroit is an injury to everyone of us in the media profession in Akwa Ibom State. We already hold a loathsome disposition to everyone who had a hand in that arrest. Even though we hear that they are planning to kill us, our committment to speaking the truth and staying as the voice of the people of Akwa Ibom state remains total.

Information at our disposal shows that Mr Emmanuel Sam will be arraigned in court tomorrow. As media professionals, we shall all troop out to court in solidarity with one of our members who has been singled out as a starting point of the Promise of Warsaw. Let them send their armies to come and kill us there. It would be easier as they will find us in a large number at the court premises

Eket State Constituency,Zoning,Streamlining,Hon. David Lawrence deserves a second term.

As preparation, consultations are gathering momentum for the 2019 elections,the political atmosphere in Eket Local government appears set for another round of political participations by the stakeholders,market men and women to engage in electoral activity to bring about a legislative capacity,effectiveness and sustainability,for the benefit of the people of Eket State Constituency.

Obong Paul Ekpo, the state chairman of the peoples Democratic party in state,during the just concluded Federal constituency tour by the party,reiterated the party's commitment towards ensuring that the party will ensure transparency in the conduct of the primaries of the party,where candidates of the party will emerge and stand for the general election. He emphasised that delegates should not vote for any candidate that they know,will not win in the general election, because politics is a game of numbers.

The issue regarding Zoning of political offices within the party was not left out,but in every general rule,there is an exception. Zoning as a gentleman agreement to share political offices among the people has been practiced in the state,though with some exception,especially when legislative capacity and effective representation is involve,while talking power ration,the party chairman also took time to consider what is called Streamlining, the concept of reshaping the zoning of the political offices as 2019 is approaching,so that effective representation ,legislative experience will not be sacrifice on the alter of zoning.

Talking about zoning, the concept of zoning has never stopped other aspirants who some people feel are not favoured by zoning from contesting election. In Eket local government Area for instance, It could be recalled that in 2011, the political leader Chief Ndueso Essien conducted a mock election at his residence for those that aspired for the house of Assembly position,all the aspirants participated. Those who were not favoured by zoining were not questioned about their eligibility to seek for a election on the grounds of zoning.

For the Eket State Constituency election for 2019, Some stakeholders are of the opinion that the Urban zone of the local government can not be empty in 2019,because positions are always shared among the three zones of the local government. Currently,the Chairman of the local government Hon. Frank Archibong is from Eket Central, Hon. Nsikan John the Vice Chairman is from Okon,while the member representing the state constituency in the Akwa Ibom State house of Assembly, is from Urban.

It is on record that when Chief Edohoeket in 1999 was the chairman of Eket local government, the Vice Chairman came from Eket central,while Okon took the Assembly, where late Hon. Moses Ukpong represented the area.The next person who took over from Chief Edohoeket as the chairman of Eket local government, was Hon. Emmanuel Udoh from Okon,Hon. David Lawrence from Urban was the Vice Chairman, while Rt. Hon. Jack Udota from Central had the Assembly seat. Another instance,was when Hon. Ayang Akanimo represented the local government at the state house of Assembly from Urban,Hon. Aniekan Akpan from Okon was the chairman of the local government, while Hon. Victor Henry from Central was the Vice Chairman.

It could be recalled that few months ago,when Eket PDP stakeholders met with the Governor Udom Emmanuel as the leader of the party,to express their concerns on the matter regarding Eket State Constituency seat in the coming election, were those in attendance at the meeting ,included Chief Ndueso Essien, Ambassador Assam Assam and others. The Governor said,that from the interaction from the stakeholders,it was clear that there exist two school of thought to the matter.

Over 251 Political leaders and stakeholders in Oruk Anam local government area have asked Sir. Udo Kierian Akpan, Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and member representing Oruk Anam to contest again for the representative seat he is currently occupying in the 2019 election.

They declared their support for another term of office for the lawmaker on Wednesday 27th June at a special meeting held in Ikot Esenam, Oruk Anam.

The meeting was attended by chapter officers of the PDP, ward chairmen and their deputies, women and youth leaders, secretaries of wards, councillors, former party officers, and thousands of supporters of the lawmaker from across the 13 wards of the local government.

This endorsement is coming five days after a group of youths purportedly from Oruk Anam asked Mr. Akpan to jettison his third term aspiration, in what observers described as a protest sponsored by a few political office holders from the area who are not comfortable with the fame currently enjoyed by the House Leader.

If Kierian Akpan gets the ticket from the PDP for next year's election, it will be the third time the lawmaker will be contesting for the seat, as he acceded to the request. .

Those who spoke at the meeting said Sir Akpan had given a good account of himself as their representative and is deserving of another term because he has lived up to his electoral promises.

A former chairman of Oruk Anam local government area, Effiong Thompson Udonwo, a political stalwart, Nicolas Idungafa, and Chief Bassey Essien, who were part of the forum, said the constituency is being represented by a lawmaker whose impact is being felt by everybody.

In particular, Mr Udongwo who described last week's protest the lawmaker's aspiration as a misplaced priority, said it was carried out by youths who were chasing shadows rather than the main issue.

"The main issue is that we have agreed for both Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to go back for their second term, and it makes great political sense to back our performing lawmaker, Sir Udo Kierian Akpan, for another term.

He also pointed out that the House Leader, apart from initiating quality debates on the floor of the House of Assembly, has made so many interventions in his constituency, and has lived up to his electoral promises thereby making the whole people proud.

Meanwhile, the youths of Oruk Anam have distanced themselves from the recent protest against the third term aspiration of the lawmaker.

Kingsley Frank Ikwot, together with the Vice Chairman of Oruk Anam Caucus and the Chapter Youth Leader of the PDP in the area spoke on behalf of the youths at Wednesday meeting.

“We were not aware and were never part of whatever protest that had been done in Uyo. The youths were never consulted and we don’t know whatever that happened there.

"As the epicenter of Oruk Anam youths, our position is that Governor Udom Emmanuel should go back for a second term in office, including His Excellency the Senate Minority Leader, while a fresh term is what we want for our leader, Sir Udo Kierian Akpan", Ikwot said.

Oruk Anam local government area comprises two political zones, with 13 wards. Six wards are in the Anam zone, while the Oruk bloc has seven wards.

In the local government, the three political offices of council chairman, PDP chapter chairman and the house of assembly seat are usually shared by representatives from the two zones.

The current chairman of Oruk Anam local government council , Mr Ubong Idiong, who is the elder brother to Mrs. Martha Udom Emmanuel, the governor’s wife, is from the Oruk zone. The other office, which is that of the chairman of the ruling PDP, is occupied by Mr. Jacob King, also from Oruk. Going by the zoning arrangement of the area, those at yesterday's meeting said that the political configuration favours the Anam zone to retain the only remaining political office in the area which is the office of member of legislature currently occupied by Udo Kierian Akpan.

Earlier in his address to the people, Kierian Akpan said members of the PDP and the entire Oruk Anam people are peaceful brothers and sisters, noting that anyone who plans to cause trouble during next year's general elections will not succeed.

"When the political situation became hot during the 2015 electioneering, we were the ones who stood firm and supported our party. In the forthcoming 2019 elections, we will still support the party.

"Our position in Oruk Anam is to ensure that Governor Udom Emmanuel returns for a second term in 2019. Our desire also is to ensure that we return Senator Godswill Akpabio for a second term, while I get the house of assembly seat in 2019 too.

"Oruk Anam is not volatile area. For those who have caused to be published that there'll be crisis in Oruk Anam as it is happening in Ukanafun, I am calling the security agencies, police and the SSS (State Security Services) interrogate them on what they know about the Ukanafun crisis.

"Seeking for re-election is not a crime. When I go for the primary election of the PDP in Oruk Anam and voters cast their votes against me, I will leave in peace and embrace the winner and work for the party. If I win, we will all work for the party. I am calling on the men, women and youths of Oruk Anam to remain in peace as we look forward to the elections".
