Politics / Re: Nigeria Ranked 5th On Uk Student Visa Application List by solaugo(m): 7:17pm On Apr 07, 2011
If you want to know why many Nigerians continue to flock out to countries with more serious educational policies like the UK, all you need do is to simply listen to our dear GEJ speaking English in public (or worse still, his wife) and you would need to go no further!
That the certificate GEJ holds is defined as a PhD from a Nigerian University makes me wonder what the quality of a Bachelor degree holder is expected to be; assuming a direct extrapolation?
With people like that as our President and assuming we continue to use his education policy, all that one should expect in the near future (read 4 years), is a graduate who can neither read nor write, talk more of applying for a job, if one were to exist (someone just scoffed at me, there are examples already!). The recently released WAEC result is evidence enough, in support of this hypothesis.

Vote out PDP, its all their fault!

Politics / Nigeria Ranked 5th On Uk Student Visa Application List by solaugo(m): 7:06pm On Apr 07, 2011
Nigeria is ranked fifth among 20 countries who top the list of those with highest application for students visa into the United Kingdom between 2005 and 2010.

According to a report by the British Parliament’s Committee on Home Affairs a total of 2,468 Nigerian students applied for British visas between January to March 2010.

Out of these 1,716 were approved while 1,082 were refused visas.

The report titled, “Student Visas,’’ obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in London, indicated that a total of 54,096 student visas were issued during the period.

Further breakdown showed that a total of 6,856 visas were issued in 2005, 7,036 in 2006 and 8,385 in 2007.

The report further showed that 9,666 visas were issued in 2008, while 11,205 were issued in 2009 and 10,948 in 2010.

Meanwhile, a UK Border Agency document stated that the new migration cap policy affecting non-EU countries, including a new visa and immigration fees would take effect from April 6.

The statement explained that the fees would allow the British government to generate revenue to be used in funding the UK immigration system and to support wider government objectives.

“The revenue generated will contribute towards securing our borders and controlling migration for the benefit of the UK,’’ the statement said.

According to the new visa regime applicants requiring a short visit visa will now pay 76 pounds instead of the previous 70 pounds while those who require visa for up to two years will pay 265 up from 245 pounds.

A 10-year visa, according to the new visa regime, will now attract 702 instead of 650 pounds.

Others are short term student visa (12 months) now 140 pounds from 70 pounds.

NAN recalls that the UK government recently unveiled a cap on migration, which aims to reduce net migration from hundreds to tens of thousands over the next four years.

To attain this level, the immigration cap proposal targets non-EU migrants, with a special focus on student visas, which would receive severe cuts.

The new visa regime is expected to affect fresh applications and those already in the UK seeking post-study work visas.

Politics / Why Former Acting Icpc Boss Was Sacked - Fg by solaugo(m): 8:32pm On Mar 24, 2011
The Federal Government, yesterday, denounced insinuations that it sacked former acting chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Professor Uriah Angulu, from office, owing to his unwillingness to prosecute the current administrator of the National Judicial Institute, NJI, Justice Umaru Eri and the incumbent Minister of State for Health, Mr Suleiman Bello, following their alleged complicity in separate fraud cases.

The government’s refutal was contained in a statement that was issued by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, AGF, Mr Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, in Abuja, yesterday.

It will be recalled that government through a letter dated March 18, and signed on behalf of the AGF by one Abdullah Yola, ordered the ex-ICPC Acting chairman, to forthwith, vacate his office, adding that he should immediately handover to a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Dr. Rosemary Abang Wushishi.

This sudden shuffle at the ICPC is coming on the heels of recent revelations that the ousted chairman, Angulu, had been under intense pressure from ‘above’, to drop further probe of the purported N6 billion fraud that he unearthed at the NJI, and the uncanny drama that trailed the aborted moves by the ICPC under his command, to arraign the sitting Minister of state for health, Bello, over allegations that he had collected a sum of N11.2 million from Governor Murtala Nyako as ‘hardship allowance”, whilst he acted as the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Adamawa State, in 2007.

There are insinuations that Professor Angulu’s removal was not unconnected with his perceived rigid stance on the fight against corruption in the higher places.

Reacting to the allegations yesterday, government in a statement that was signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the AGF, Mr Ambrose Momoh, denied that Angulu’s removal was related to ‘on-going probe of an alleged N6bn fraud in the National Judicial Institute, NJI, and the trial of a Minister.

The statement said: “For avoidance of doubt, AIG Abang Rosemary Wushishi’s appointment was made in compliance with the provision of section 3(4) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offence Act, CAP. C31, LFN 2004, which states that the chairman shall be a person who has held or is qualified to hold office as a judge of a Superior Court of record in Nigeria.

“Since this requirement also applies to appointments made in an acting capacity, it was necessary to guide against any likely challenges of the powers exercised by Dr Uriah Angulu who did not possess the requisite qualification.”
Jobs/Vacancies / News - News - Arik Airline Staff Cries For Help, Says Chairman "calls Us Monkeys by solaugo(m): 8:44pm On Mar 23, 2011
We want to say a very big thank you for the kind of first class information we get from your network. We really do pray that God will continue to be with you and increase your knowledge and power to say more of the truth needed to build our nation. We will like to bring to your notice that we the staff of Arik Air are not happy with the way and manner our management is treating us. We worked very hard to make our living, but what we get in return is the 2 months delay in salaries, abusive languages from our Chairman, humiliation and underpayment.

You can imagine when our chairman addressed us and called us Monkeys; but in our mind we call him Baboon. Off course we all know Baboons are fathers to monkeys. To substantiate our facts, majority of our Nigerian Pilots have left Arik and they are still counting. Mr Egwuonu, our chief Pilot resigned two months ago and Some are resigning their appointments. Cabin crews also are not left behind Sure, we will all want to work in place where we will be treated nicely.

By standard, cabin crews are those that make the money for any airline all over the world, but the reverse is the case for Arik Air. Sometimes, when we go to

London and America, we meet our colleagues from other different airlines and they tell us the kind of benefits they get as a cabin crew.

You can imagine, there are no workmanship benefits, no health insurance, salary is the smallest in the in the world, Arik Air do not even refer crew members to the embassy, No rebate as s staff. There is absolutely nothing you can benefit as a staff of Arik Air.

You can imagine if a crew that has to risk his or her life comes back to be paid N55,000.00 basic and plus all your allowances and flight time N110,000 per month Funny enough, the salary will be paid on the 25th day of the new month. Sometime some of us don’t get our salaries until the sixtieth day or more. Why, all because there are no jobs.

Kindly remind this man that there are other airlines before he started his business. Ask him to fathom what happened to Okada Air, Albarka air and other.

A word is enough for the wise or we will fight you very strongly to the extent of seeing your aircraft sleeping at the airport and no one will be ready to operate the flight.

Please kindly send this to the internet if his friends can call him to other or we will be ready for a showdown one day.

Concern Crew Member,

Atiku Chinelo Abidemi.

Politics / News - Jonathan 'sacks' Controversial Campaign Aide, Mike Omeri by solaugo(m): 7:47pm On Mar 23, 2011
Mike Omeri, the controversial Director of Research and Strategy at the Goodluck/Sambo campaign, has been "suspended."

Mr. Omeri had been seconded to the post from the office of Nigeria's Senate president, David Mark, to "assist" the executive branch, an action that revealed a dangerous level of collusion between both arms of the government.

Mr. Omeri was an instant success in terms of his ability to think outside the law.  Last December 25, SaharaReporters exposed the existence of a "rigging manual" he had authored to guarantee victory at the presidential primaries for Jonathan. The document defined how the Jonathan campaign could deploy a scorched earth political policy that would take advantage of the police and other security agencies, as well as undermine members of the opposition, pro-democracy NGOs, religious leaders and electoral officials.

Omeri's fall from his privileged position seems related to one of Jonathan's weakest spots: his wife's money-laundering issues that he has found difficult to resolve.  A few days ago, Omeri issued a public statement on the matter accusing the CPC candidate, Muhammamad Buhari and ACN candidate, Nuhu Ribadu, of hypocrisy over their anti-corruption stance.  That has caused Jonathan untold hardship as the candidates came out swinging against him.  Yesterday, presidential spokesman Ima Niboro said Omeri's statement had been unauthorized, calling it "an unfortunate statement from the PDP presidential campaign office which was certainly not authorized by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan."

Omeri is the second casualty at the faltering Jonathan campaign.  Last month, Sully Abu, a veteran journalist, was relieved of his position as Director of Media and Publicity.  Mr.Abu has now been replaced by another former journalist, Ide Eguabor, formerly of the National Interest newspaper.

Mrs. Jonathan has two cases of money-laundering at the EFCC arising in August and September 2006.  Although the former EFCC chairman and now ACN presidential candidate, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has reversed previous statements he made about Mrs. Jonathan's involvement, the EFCC never issued a statement about its investigation of either case.  There are N104 million and $13.5 million involved, and the EFCC had obtained court authorization to freeze them.

Mr. Omeri is required to answer to a formal query issued by the campaign. The query promises stiffer penalty should his response fail to convince his superiors.

Contacted by SaharaReporters, Omeri said he was not yet aware of the disciplinary actions against him, claiming he was out of the office.

Politics / Re: Gej Removes Acting Icpc Chair Over Probe Of Nji, Minister by solaugo(m): 2:38pm On Mar 23, 2011
Nigeria, on danger list, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Politics / Gej Removes Acting Icpc Chair Over Probe Of Nji, Minister by solaugo(m): 11:02am On Mar 23, 2011
The Federal Government has removed the acting Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Uriah Angulu, following the probe of an alleged N6billion fraud in the National Judicial Institute (NJI) and trial of a minister.

A commissioner in the agency, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Abang Rosemary Wushishi was asked to take over from Angulu.

Investigation by The Nation indicated that Angulu was asked to proceed on terminal leave based on a letter from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN).

The March 12 letter, followed a purported directive to the Minister by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Angulu’s removal caught most (ICPC) officials unawares because he was expected to complete his tenure of two terms in office as a commissioner in July.

A top source said: “Ideally, even if anyone has to go on terminal leave, it should not be more than three months. And normally, the retiree used to serve statutory notice, not the government compelling it.

“We were all shocked by the speed with which the government hurriedly asked Angulu to vacate office.

“Even it was at the sudden handover on Tuesday that Angulu read his letter of compulsory terminal leave to the management of ICPC.

“The development cast a pall of gloom on the commission because Angulu’s removal was more than meets the eye.”

It was, however, gathered that the removal of Angulu was in connection with the presidency’s uncomfortable posture with the ‘recent combative anti-corruption drive of ICPC.’

Another highly-placed source in ICPC said: “Twice now, the government has expressed reservations about the activities of this commission.

“The manner in which ICPC charged Minister of State for Health, Suleiman Bello to court, for alleged corrupt enrichment of about N11.2million, was considered embarrassing to the Presidency.

“Although the AGF demanded the case file of Bello from ICPC, the row over exercise of the AGF’s powers in Section 174(1) (b) of the 1999 Constitution, created image crisis for the government.

“The ICPC management also insisted in pursuing the case to its logical conclusion.

“Also, the ongoing investigation of alleged N6billion fraud in the NJI, whose Governing Council is headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, further strained the relationship between ICPC and the government.

“There has been pressure to halt the probe but ICPC and the CJN had to exchange hot correspondences on the matter.

“I think the government did not find Angulu amenable and decided to ask him to proceed on terminal leave.”

As at press time, top officials and workers of the NJI were celebrating Angulu’s removal.

“Have you heard what happened to the acting Chairman of ICPC? We warned him but he was adamant. Let him go on leave and continue with the probe,” the joyous source added.

Politics / Gej Refused To Sign Minimum Wage Bill Into Law by solaugo(m): 10:19am On Mar 23, 2011
NEWS - President Goodluck Jonathan refused to sign minimum wage bill into law, This is to pacify State Governors that have promised him block votes from their States, NLC to commence nation-wide strike beginning from Monday 28th March if the bill is not sign into law this week,

A week to the general election, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Tuesday, gave a strong indication of its readiness to disrupt the electoral process should President Goodluck Jonathan fail to immediately assent the N18,000 national minimum wage.

To this end, the NLC, on Tuesday, gave President Jonathan a six-day ultimatum to sign the bill and ensure that its implementation begins accordingly.

Addressing what it tagged a crucial press conference after its National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting held at the Labour House, Abuja, on Tuesday, president of the NLC, Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, gave President Jonathan up till Monday, March 28, 2011 to assent the bill or face workers’ final wrath and the disruption of the April polls.

Omar said the 10th National Delegates Conference had given the NAC and the National Executive Council (NEC) a clear directive on the new minimum wage which must be adhered to and carried out.

The delegates’ conference of the NLC had directed its NEC to do everything to stop the April general election if the issue of the minimum wage was not resolved before the elections.

The conference had said: “Congress-in-session noted that the struggle for a new national minimum wage which started since 2008 has dragged on for so long and, therefore, condemned the delay in its implementation long after the end of tripartite negotiations. Congress-in-session observed that this delay is deliberate and orchestrated by some governors of some states of the federation.

“Congress-in-session resolved and called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency ensure the implementation of the new national minimum wage in a couple of weeks in order to avert the wrath of workers.

“Towards this end, Congress-in-session resolved that if this is not achieved as envisaged by workers, congress will be left with no option but to stop the April 2011 general election. Congress-in-session has, therefore, directed the leadership of congress to put in place a mechanism to enforce this directive.”

Acting on this premise, Comrade Omar said, on Tuesday, that this directive must be obeyed and carried out to the letter.

To achieve this, the NLC president stated that the Central Working Committee would converge on Abuja for its final meeting on Monday, March 28, to assess and analyse the situation and take a final decision.

“But the most important thing we must send across is the fact that in line with the pursuit of the mandate given to us by the delegates’ conference, the National Administrative Council (NAC) has decided to fix a meeting of the Central Working Committee for Monday the 28th of this month.

“That is where we will take a critical analysis of the journey so far and final decision taken regarding the national minimum wage.

“We have been pursuing this with all vigour and we are determined, based on the mandate given us by Nigerian workers, that we will pursue it to its logical conclusion.

“We are aware of the disposition of Mr President because he has pledged time without number that he would be ready to sign the bill into law. I will recall his letter to the National Assembly urging it to give it an accelerated hearing and passage and, on his part, he will be ready to sign it into law.

“Now that the only thing that remains is for Mr President to sign it into law, I do hope that the president will fulfil his pledge to Nigerian workers by signing this into law between now and Monday 28th of this month, when the CWC shall be meeting to consider the journey so far.

“The only thing we are waiting for is for Mr President to sign the bill into law. We will be able to assess the situation when the CWC meets and will take a final decision,” Comrade Omar said.

The CWC comprises all the presidents, general secretaries and treasurers of all industrial unions affiliated to the NLC.

Omar regretted the different statement being made by top government officials on the signing or otherwise of the bill by President Jonathan, saying that while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory said it had been signed by the president, the labour minister denied its signing.

Education / Microsoft Invites Entries For 2011 Imagine Cup Students Software Competition by solaugo(m): 9:00pm On Mar 16, 2011
The global software giant, Microsoft, Tuesday, in Lagos announced opening of entries for the 2011 Imagine Cup students software competition for students in the tertiary institutions across the nation. The Imagine Cup, according to Microsoft, invites students in Nigeria to learn, collaborate and change the world by applying their imagination, passion and creativity to technology innovations.

To lend students with inspiration for their Imagine Cup entries, Microsoft has also invited intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), non governmental organizations (NGOs), and non-profits for the first time to submit real problems for the students to consider for their projects, through a new program called Imagine Cup Solve.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday to unfold plans for this year’s competition, Dele Akinsade, Technology Lead, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa with said that what begins begins with a burst of inspiration and a lot of hard work can become a future software breakthrough, a jump start for a career, or a flourishing new industry.

According to him, the software competition is opened to students in tertiary institution who can use their creative software products to solve the toughest world probles.

“These organizations recognize that technology solutions can expand the reach of their services and help them more effectively meet the needs of their audiences, while Microsoft can help provide a marketplace of ideas that students can select to address issues that matter most to them,” Ngozi Ife Anene, PR & Communications Lead for Microsoft Anglophone West Africa said.

For the Nigerian representatives at the world finals last year in Poland, it was a good exposure. “Representing Nigeria at the Imagine Cup finals in 2010 was a great experience”, Adeboye Oshinaga, member of Team Indwell, said, adding that, “Not only were we able to showcase our knowledge and use of innovative software, we were able to network with other students from around the world and learn more about software development from a global perspective. We plan to participate again this year and win the finals for Nigeria”.

Now in its ninth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to become the world’s premier student technology competition with more than 325,000 students representing 100 countries participating in last year’s event.

With a competition theme inspired by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems,” the Imagine Cup spans one year, beginning with local, regional and online contests, before the Worldwide Finals take place in New York City, USA in July 2011.

In Nigeria, the local Imagine Cup will take place May 2011 and students, currently enrolled in tertiary institutions and between 17-26 years of age, are encouraged to register their entries in the main categories of: Software Design, Embedded Development, Game Design, Digital Media and Windows Phone 7.

It would be recalled that in 2010, the Nigeria Imagine Cup finals was won by Team Indwell, a team of three students from Obafemi Awolowo University.

The team represented Nigeria at the global finals which held in Warsaw, Poland in July 2010. To commend their efforts at the global finals, the team were presented with Windows 7 phones at a media briefing which held today at the Microsoft office in

The winning Imagine Cup team from Nigeria will have the opportunity to travel to the Worldwide Finals in New York, where they will join the brightest young minds to compete on the world stage.

Like the three students from Obafemi Awolowo University that represented Nigeria at the Worldwide Finals in Poland last year, the 2011 competitors will gain real life experience, make new friends, and harness the power of technology to take on the world’s toughest problems.

As an example of the type of real-world solutions the Imagine Cup judges are looking for, in 2010, the winning team at the Worldwide Finals from Thailand developed a project that would help the hearing-impaired communicate in the classroom.

Politics / Words On Marble - What Nuhu Ribadu Said About Bola Tinubu In 2007 by solaugo(m): 10:02pm On Mar 10, 2011
“Tinubu and the rest (other governors) should consider themselves as very lucky. They ought to have been where Dariye, Fayose, Almieyeseiha are today. They cannot escape. It is a matter of time. They have the protection of the law. They enjoy immunity. “We are after them because they will want to rule us again. The constitution is against indicted people. After their tenure, they will be prosecuted. They remain indicted and are not fit to hold public positions”

“These people have to answer for their misdeeds instead of giving the impression that they cannot be dealt with”

-Mallam Nuhu Ribadu – Former EFCC chairman spoke to Airport Correspondence at MMIA on Sunday Feb. 18, 2007 and published in Vanguard of Mon. Feb. 19, 2007 pages 1 & 15, and Punch Newspaper of Mon. Feb. 19, 2007 pages 1&15
