Education / PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge For Secondary School Students In Lagos State by solaugo(m): 9:19pm On Jun 13, 2013
Chemistry is a dynamic and interesting discipline that cuts across all areas of human lives. It is the central science that is deeply ingrained in health care, engineering, business, management, government, marketing, product development, environmental management and even law!

In view of this central and important role, PZ Cussons Foundation is promoting the study of chemistry through open competition o Nigerian secondary schools.

The primary objective of the competition is to stimulate and inspire the learning of Chemistry amongst students and raise their IQ. It is to also demonstrate the relevance and role of chemistry in our society.

Notable personalities who left their marks in various fields of human endeavor were students of Chemistry. This includes late Margaret Thatcher, the first and only female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua, Dr John Stith Pemberton, the celebrated inventor of Coca-Cola and the first black woman in space, Mae Jemison – a graduate of chemical engineering.

The competition shall be in three stages: First Stage, Second Stage and the Main Challenge

The First stage shall be written quiz and all screened candidates shall participate at this stage.

The Second stage shall also be written quiz and only the best 100 from the first stage shall qualify for the stage.

The Final stage which is the Main Challenge shall be the battle of the guns.

Only the best four from the Second stage shall qualify for the Finals.

Only those who understand Chemistry as a discipline and how it relates to the real world will stand a chance to be crowned the 2013 Champion. Who would that be?

The competition is open to all first and second year senior secondary school students in Lagos State. Interested students will need the endorsement of their schools and the support of their parents or guardians. These students have to be ready to demonstrate their chemistry dexterity, to challenge and be challenged in the PZ Cussons Chemistry Challenge. They will make history as the 2013 PZ Cussons Chemistry Challengers!
“The competition is open to all first and second year senior secondary school students in Lagos State. Entry opens June 3 and closes June 28, 2013″

“Information reaching JAMB shows Internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other. “

This is pure deceit, the public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data.

“Let me once again state that candidates are allowed to change their choices of institutions and courses once only, this change has to be effected within two weeks from today. “

Ojerinde said the Computer Based Test (CBT) is scheduled to take place from May 18 to June 1 and appealed to candidates to reprint their e-registration slips afresh to further ascertain their CBT centres.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is to end its paper and pencil based examinations by 2015.

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i, stated this at the inauguration of the board’s of the computer-based testing in Abuja, on Thursday.

Rufai expressed the hope that in the next three years, all JAMB’s conducted examinations would be computer based.

She said, “This is an effort by JAMB to ensure that we have computer-based testing. The computer based testing has many advantages which includes the elimination of examination malpractice.

“It is our hope that by 2015, all JAMB examinations will be computer-based and students will have their scores instantly.”

Earlier, the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said the board would construct five testing centres with 150 terminals in five states in 2013.

According to him, candidates will, for now, have the option of using either the paper-pencil or the e-testing option or both for all JAMB-related examinations.

On the recent pilot test carried out with 600 students in Abuja, Ojerinde said it was a testimony to the viability of the e-testing in line with global best practices for such examinations.

He said, “The e-testing option which we have test run and found effective has many advantages.

“It ensures prompt delivery of raw scores; it eliminates cases of incomplete results; eliminates result blackout and checks examination malpractice.”

Currently, Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examinations conducted by JAMB are manually assessed.

Candidates are subjected to a written multiple choice test and they are provided with special answer sheets and HB pencils. The questions are also manually marked.
