Nairaland / General / Dana Air, Asky Sign Interline Agreement For Strategic Partnership by supomi: 12:44pm On Feb 20, 2018
Dana Air, Asky Sign Interline Agreement for Strategic Partnership

An interline agreement has been reached between one of Nigeria's leading airlines Dana Air and Asky airline, Africa’s regional power house, in Lagos yesterday.

Dana Air’s strategic route and fleet expansion program also received a major boost, with the signing of an aircraft partnership agreement with the airline to add some new generation aircraft to its fleet

Speaking during a brief signing ceremony at Dana Air’s Corporate Head office in Lagos, the Group Managing Director of Dana Air, Jacky Hathiramani said, ‘we have taken a bold step towards achieving our strategic route and fleet expansion program. With this partnership, we shall be adding some brand new aircraft to our fleet soon.’’

‘We have also had advanced talks with some other notable aircraft manufacturers and very soon, some of aircraft outside the country on maintenance will also be arriving. This is part of our desire to provide options for our guests who have also been requesting us to consider some under-served cities in Nigeria. We want to assure our guests of our commitment towards providing safe, reliable, affordable and world-class air transport services in Nigeria.’’

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, the CEO of Asky airlines, Mr Ahadu Simachew said, ‘Dana Air having survived the sundry issues in the aviation industry for ten years and still waxing stronger, appears to us as the most experienced and well-managed airline in Nigeria, with a very strong, passionate and creative management team. We are happy to have reached an agreement and we believe this is good for Nigeria and Africa.’’

Dana Airlines having flown over 2.7 million passengers in the last 9years of its operation is Nigeria’s first new world carrier, offering premium services at affordable rates. The airline with over 25 daily flights from Lagos to Abuja, Uyo, Port Harcourt, and Owerri is reputed for its innovative online product, ontime performance and world-class in-flight service
Nairaland / General / Dana Air Decorates Captains, First Officers Says It Trained 27 Officers In 2017 by supomi: 9:04pm On Feb 08, 2018
DANA Air today decorated two captains and three first officers as its ongoing plans to build local capacity, deepen its niche of providing safe and legal operations as an airline.

This is just as the Dana management team revealed that it has trained 27 Nigerian pilots in 2017 and may still have to decorate more pilots soon to complement its growth.

The airline, in a brief ceremony, decorated as Captain, Kalu Sylvester and Ibrahim Kazeem while it decorated Ilesanmi Ayotunde, Afolabi Damilola and Lawal Wahab as First Officers.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of Flight Operations, Captain Segun Omole stated that he was looking at the newly decorated pilots like fresh university graduates eager to contribute their quota for the growth of the industry.

Omole said,” This is just the beginning, the tenets of our operations is to fly the aircraft safely and legally. If it is not legal then it is not safe and if it is not safe it is not legal.”

“When our aircraft first came we had to use a foreign crew because not many Nigerians were trained on the MD-83s. We knew that we would have to transit to local crew and from 20% Nigerian crew working in Dana, we can now boast of a 90% crew. There are some risks in training but Dana continues to train. We still have some more pilots in training and maybe in a few months from now we may have more decorations,” Omole said.

On how many the airline has trained do far and how the pilots will impact on the airline’s operations visavis fleet size, both captain Omole and Accountable Officer, Obi Mbanuzor made separate inputs.

On trained pilots, Omole stated,” we trained 27 Nigerian pilots in 2017 and we have decided to continue to bring I the new graduates into Dana Air because if you catch them young you can mould them in your culture.”

” We are not saying we do not hire captains, we do but when we train them they imbibe our culture from scratch while hired captains come from a different environment and bring a culture clash. We are trying to endure all our captains come in as First Officers with the opportunity to grow as captains.”

On how all the trained personnel would fit into ha airline’s operations, Mbanuzor said,” you know it takes four sets of crew to operate an aircraft and we have four for now meaning we need 16 crew to fly the aircraft plus we have one aircraft that has just undergone a major check and we still have two pilots there to test fly the aircraft. And we are still planning on acquiring aircraft in the no distant future and if we start training when those aircraft come in then we are already late. Currently we have 16 pilots and 17 co-pilots.”

Speaking for the decorated pilots, Captain Kalu Sylvester said the pilots would do their utmost to be good ambassadors and fly the airline’s flag high stating that Dana is the best airline to work with as its procedures are on point.

He commended the management for being steadfast and hardworking

Nigerian, Ghanaian Edge Closer to 2018 Rhodes Scholarship

As the 2018 Scholar Selection Process of the newly reinstated Rhodes Scholarships for West Africa reaches advanced stages, the dream of post-graduate studies at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, will soon become reality for one remarkably brilliant student from Nigeria, Ghana or any other country in the sub-region. The selected candidate will join other scholars from around the world to commence studies at the prestigious university in the October 2018 academic session.

Rhodes National Secretary for West Africa, Ike Chioke, reaffirmed this while providing update to the media on the progress of the scheme. According to him: “Following the formal re-launch of the West Africa Scholarships in May this year, and the call for applications which opened on 1st June, the scholarship application portal officially closed on September 30, 2017 while the timeline for submission of references elapsed on October 15, 2017.”

“A total of 2,948 applications were received from intending scholars across West Africa. However, only 505 completed the Scholarship information requirements. Of this number, a total of 244 candidates who graduated with a First Class degree or its equivalent made it to the next round, and we subsequently scaled down to 65 candidates based on other selection criteria including moral force of character, commitment to service and instinct to lead. Further screening and in-person interviews were conducted between November 17 and 19 in Lagos and Accra while the final round of interviews for a shortlist of 15 persons is scheduled for December 1 and 2. This is where the 2018 ‘Scholar-Elect’ for West Africa will be decided.”

Chioke also revealed that the scholarship would cover all university and college fees, a personal stipend for room and board, health insurance and travel, as well as the costs of the Rhodes Leadership Development Programme at Rhodes House. “Depending on the course of study, the total value of the scholarship could range from £50,000 to £60,000 per annum, with the average tenure for a Rhodes Scholar being 3 years. Over time, up to three scholars in residence will be supported under each scholarship at a total of approximately £170,000 each year per Scholarship”, he noted.

The Rhodes Trust – the preeminent international scholarship programme established at Oxford University in 1903 – selects creative young leaders with a commitment to serving others. In the century since the establishment of the Rhodes Scholarships, the Trust has convened a community of extraordinary people who share a history of enriching their communities, pioneering in their chosen fields, and applying the knowledge and experience acquired as Scholars to the betterment of society.

The new West Africa scholarships are part of a wider geographic expansion of the Rhodes Scholarships. The total number of Scholarships awarded each year will increase from 83 to 95, including new Scholarships in China, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Palestine, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and West Africa. This increases the number of Rhodes Scholars studying at the University of Oxford at any one time to approximately 250. The expansion into these regions marks a historic moment for the Rhodes Trust, and further strengthens the international Rhodes community.
