Politics / NBC Orders Media Houses To Be Soft On Killer Herdsmen Coverage by tociano009(m): 7:08pm On Jan 28, 2021
The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has warned media houses in the country to cautiously report the issue of insecurity particularly around the Herdsmen crisis in Ondo and Oyo state.

The regulatory body, in a statement dated January 26,  said this directive to “remind broadcasters of the rules governing the coverage of crisis.”

The statement invoked certain provisions of the NBC’s code, asking that media houses and broadcasters present the news up to professional standards, as well as refrain from spreading information that it deems “divisive.”

The NBC released similar directives, last year, about the coverage and reportage of the #EndSARS protests, urging them to soften the gravity of the information being shared, to prevent the aggravation of the situation.

The group, which was established by former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida to further fascist policies, also asked that media houses refrain from embarrassing individuals, organisations and the government.

Media houses such as Channels Television, AIT and Arise TV were fined N3 million each over violating the NBC code and for their “unprofessional coverage” of the EndSARS protests and the crisis that followed it.

Politics / NDLEA To Test All Nigerian Students For Marijuana, Other Drugs: Marwa by tociano009(m): 4:15pm On Jan 25, 2021
Chairman/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, (Retd) has given commanders of the agency in all the states of the federation and special commands marching orders to mop up illicit drugs across the country.

He gave the directive during a meeting with commanders of the 36 states, FCT and special commands on Monday at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, where he also hinted of plans to seek government’s approval to conduct drug tests on tertiary institutions’ new students, security agencies’ fresh recruits and all newly appointed government employees.

While telling the commanders who briefed him on their posts and areas of responsibility that he’s honoured and proud to serve as Chairman of NDLEA, he said “all commanders must be desirous of keeping drugs out of Nigerian streets and homes, and so all of you must shape up and get all those engaged in the nefarious business to face the music, and I need results from now on. Our maxim will be offensive action. This means we must go all out constantly on the offensive against the bad guys.”

“The success we make of this particular task goes a long way to determine the socio-economic stability of the nation. We need not be told of the nexus between drug use, crime and criminalities. The exponential growth of the nefarious drug activities can be directly linked to the upsurge in crimes such as insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, political thuggery, gangsterism, rape and other maladaptation bedeviling today’s Nigeria.

“It is not going to be business as usual. It is a moving train. Please, let nobody stand in its front. The train will crush any such person. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. To the unbending drug crime perpetrators, I would like to let them know also that the game is up! It is high time they embraced another trade. The Federal Government’s policy on agriculture is a window for them to leverage on”, he added.

He said he would put more efforts on drug demand reduction as part of plans to eradicate the scourge in Nigeria. “While strengthening our enforcement activities, we will equally devote a lot of efforts to prevention, treatment and after care and focus on family/parenting, community, school systems, advocacy to all groups through traditional institutions, religious bodies, media, NGOs, CSOs, state and local governments among others. We will rehabilitate our rehab centres, make them functional while more will be built,” he stated.

He said he would soon propose to the government “the necessity for drug tests for all tertiary institutions resuming students, NYSC members, new workers, all security agencies new recruits and random tests for government appointees. NDLEA is ready to help and we must help.”

Gen. Marwa who also expressed his determination to run with the “National Drug Control Master Plan, Our Road Map”, said toll free call centers/ help lines will soon be set up for the use of Nigerians ready to give information or seek intervention from the agency. “Ours is a national assignment. Drugs have littered everywhere; every community. We will lead the fight and we will succeed. Make no mistake about it, it’s a collective effort,” he told the commanders.

While assuring them that their welfare is a priority to him, he said the suspended training of newly recruited personnel would soon resume once appropriate clearance from relevant authorities is secured. “Issues of welfare of staff of the agency of paramount importance and urgency. It will be tackled. I’m aware there are no barracks, which is not conducive for your line and kind of duty. This as well as operational and logistics issues will be looked into,” he assured them.

Herdsmen: Buhari Asks Police To Shoot Sunday Igboho, Followers On Sight - Peoples Gazette

An irate President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the use of lethal force against Sunday Igboho and his supporters if they continue to “disturb public peace” in Oyo State, two police sources familiar with the matter told Peoples Gazette on Saturday.

Sunday Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, has been at the forefront of a controversial and illegal attempt to drive Nigerians of Fulani origin from Oyo State. The Nigerian Constitution accords all citizens the fundamental rights to live in any parts of the country, but Sunday Igboho and others have been riding on the anger of Yoruba political leadership against rising herdsmen violence to issue confrontational directives of their own.

Sunday Igboho led an army of his followers to Oke-Ogun parts of Oyo State on Friday, leading to a bloodshed that involved the razing of the home and other assets of a famous Fulani chief.

“The president was briefed on the matter and he said Sunday’s action can disturb public peace and it should stop,” a police chief told the Gazette by telephone Saturday afternoon. “We were told from IG’s office that the president has asked for Sunday Igboho and his followers to be shot at sight if they continue pushing to drag Nigeria into a civil war.”

Another police source told the Gazette that police Inspector-General Mohammed Adamu was seeking an alternative approach.

“He does not want to flout presidential directive, but he has been talking to Yoruba leaders to find other means of preventing the matter from escalating,” the senior police officer said by telephone. “A possible trip to the South-west is also on the table.” Both senior officers sought anonymity to discuss internal police communication.

Presidential spokesman Femi Adesina did not did not immediately return a request seeking comments about the president’s order, which could escalate brewing ethnic tensions if carried out by the police.

But earlier on Saturday morning, another presidential media aide Garba Shehu told the BBC that Mr. Adamu had sent out a signal for the arrest of Sunday Igboho and his supporters, leaving out the controversial shoot-on-sight directive of the president.

Mr. Buhari has a history of supporting bloodshed in Nigeria. As an opposition, he provoked his supporters to lynch hundreds of citizens after losing the 2011 presidential poll to Goodluck Jonathan. In December 2015 and October 2020, Mr. Buhari respectively supported the military massacres of over 1,000 Shi’a adherents in Zaria and dozens of anti-police brutality agitators in Lekki, Lagos.

Travel / Oktoberfest Canceled Due To Covid-19 Outbreak. by tociano009(m): 12:37pm On Apr 21, 2020
The popular Germany Festival usually call “OKTOBERFEST” has been cancelled, the festival which slated to start in september 29 will not hold again.

According to the organisers, this directive come in line with the ban on large gathering until August 31 by German government due to the coronavirus pandemic..

It is flabbergast that the event that sees at least 6million guest yearly will be skipped this year.

From music festivals to major sporting events, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a wave of unprecedented event cancellations around the world — and Germany’s Oktoberfest is no exception.

Germany’s latest lockdown measures now include a ban on major public events until August 31. Although Oktoberfest was due to start after the current cut-off, Bavaria’s state premier said on Tuesday the festival would not take place this year.

“Based on the current situation, I can not imagine that such a large event would even be possible at that time,” Markus Söder told journalists. He added that he and the mayor of Munich had jointly made the final decision to call it off.
