Eko Ile:

the fact is, Tinubu and the ACN folks have made their point by exposing the Awo family, the tribune and their BS, that's why they are on the defensive writing rubbish ten times a day all over the place. I know the ACN. Folks and TInubu are siting somewhere laughing at them. This is another master stroke by the ACN.

You are very daft!

You cant aspire to lead a people by trying to bring down the family of their revered leader. And, you cant aspire to Yoruba leadership cadre by keeping mum in times like this, allowing a b/a/s/t/a/r/d uncouth foreigner to lash out at the family of the most illustrious son of the people you want to lead, "sitting somewhere laughing at them."

Awo dont sit down and laugh at people. He either takes action with his head, castigate/congratulate, depending of the situation, with his mouth, or condemn in his mind. What he will not do is allow others to ridicule his people. Because very fundamental to the socio-political development of the Yoruba nation is the character of Yoruba (Asiwaju) leader, which Bola Ojuyobo Tinubu of the Chicago-Toronto-GCI fame is aspiring to. The 'Asaju' is the political head of all Yorubas. You become an authentic leader of the people because you have been elected or selected by the people to lead them.

Awolowo and Ajasin enjoyed the position as Yoruba leaders. There is  documented evidence on why BOLA TINUBU, Asiwaju awon drug dealers, can never becaome the Asiwaju of Yoruba. "Awo said in his book, Adventure in Power (page 314), "After my release, Colonel Adebayo who was military governor of the Western Region convened   a  meeting , including the leading Obas (Royal Majesties) in the region were also there. Leaders of all shades of political opinion in the region were also there……

I was elected by the governor to preside over the deliberations at the meeting. At the very outset, the question of electing a leader for the Yoruba people was raised. I ruled it out of order, The vocal among them were former members of N.C.N.C. and N.N.D.P.  As the debate proceeded, certain thoughts ran through by mind. When one of the speakers pleaded that I should reconsider my ruling, I gave in. There was a big applause for my compliance and so without any further debate a motion was proposed, it was seconded by acclamation and unanimously passed; electing me the leader (Asiwaju) of the Yoruba People”.

On September 12, 1966, Awo attended the ad-hoc conference for constitutional proposal as head of the Western Region delegation. The Arole Odua, Ooni of Ife confirmed the people’s wishes by giving his royal and spiritual blessing to the selection of Papa Awolowo as Yoruba leader.

Today, we have Asiwajus who only won their primaries after buying delegates with money from proceeds from their Overseas drug dealings.

Asiwajus that cannot be proud of their past who want to lead the proud Yoruba people.

May God save us from this money-miss-road. Asiwaju awon fake certificate peddlers!

Eko Ile:

I need you to answer the following questions.

How do you champion Awo's legacy? By joining the same people he fought against?

People like Ebenezar Babatope? So Ebenezar Babatope fought against Awo?

Pray tell, when?

Would Awo have joined the PDP

Awo is a progressive. A great thinker, who was way ahead of his time. Awo would have joined forces with eminent people like Ekwueme to move this country forward.  The question is not if he would have joined PDP, because he would have. The question is: would there have been an ACN? Which is very questionable.

Awo is a selfless Nigerian. He did not start/wanted to be a leader. There was a void, which he naturally filled. He was loved by his peers, respected by his adversaries, feared by his opponents, admired by neutral observers, trusted by those older than him. Awo would have stayed in PDP and would not have been intimidated by Ekwueme or any one else for that matter. Once Bola Ige and Adesanya realized that Ekwueme was most likely going to get the ticket, they chose to leave to found ANPP. If it were Awo, he would most likely, have stayed, and maybe fight for his place, no matter how long it took to get his opportunity.

Awolowo realised that it was impossible to convince the Igbo people to vote for any other candidate once the great Zik was in the race. It was too late for him to have a rethink since he had already chosen Chief Philip Umeadi as vice-president. The choice of Umeadi baffled his supporters. Analysts thought it was a defective move and a political miscalculation ab initio. Worse, that strategy was now woefully undermined by the sudden entry of Zik. What to do? He could not dump Umeadi if he was not to look unserious but chose to write a flattering letter to Zik, the Owelle of Onitsha, imploring him to join forces with him and that he was ready to serve under him as the “chief servant” of the Federation or executive Vice President. This was a repetition of his 1959 offer.
http://m.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201009190275692

That is Awo for you. Country first, before self aggrandizement.

Further more, reminiscent of what Ekwueme proposed to Afenifere when they met in Lagos at the initial stages of forming PDP, when he proposed a power sharing formula that looked like what Awo sought with Zik:

Awo knew that if both of them worked together, the presidency would be in the bag and Nigeria would be better for it. (Awo complained in an unpublished interview with this author in Owo in 1978 that Zik came into the race purposely to hurt his chances.) If they collaborated, they could take the presidency in an election walk-over in a ‘co-habitation’ compromise (splitting the prize by holding office one after the other in a pre- arranged two-year formula to complete the four-year official tenure). This could be procured through a gentleman’s agreement because Zik disliked written pacts

From the above, it is very clear that Awo would have taken the power sharing formula with Ekwueme, and then moved on with it, FOR THE INTEREST OF THE COUNTRY. After all, this is life, REAL LIFE I MAY ADD, you win some, and you lose so many. But when you win, hold on to it.

Simply stated, in response to your question, Awo from what we know would have stayed in PDP, and there would not have been any reason to create AD, let alone Asiwaju Company of Nigeria, and allowed it be hijacked by a out of know where, 'omo-irankiran' mother less druggy.

Who did the people of the SW picked to run their affairs? ACN/Tinubu or the PDP/Tribune and Awolowo Family

Dont be too flippant. The SW is yet to pick anyone. And BTW the Awo family arent in politics.

ACN barely won OGUN, Oyo and Ondo; 52%, 34%  and 20% respectively. Osun is a toss-up and Ekiti is most likely going to go to PDP in the next election.

Btw, she's knee deep in partisan politics, she's the head and chairmain of the Tribune and the people she hired, that she's paying and the Tribune Awolowo created to speak on behalf of the masses are attacking the people of the SW and their leaders daily on behalf of the PDP. Now tell me, is this Awolow's ideals?

Whatever delusion you have in your head, please keep it there. Tribune isnt attacking the people of the SW. I dont feel that way, and eminent people like Fashola, fasoranti, Adebanjo, OGD, Ooni, Okunrounmu, Durojaiye et al dont feel that way. And those people are the real leaders of the SW, not some random 58 yr old man born twice; once in 1952 in Iragbiji osun-State and again, like Jesus Christ, in 1954 to one famous surrogate mother by the name Abibatu Mogaji from the illustrious 'Tinubu' family.

Do you even know the meaning of ideal and legacy

No. Maybe you should tell us. I have a feeling it involves not completing secondary school education, lying about it, claiming to have attended one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Nigeria, GCI, eloping to America under a  false name under false pretense,  and somehow, like Houdini, turning an $18000/year 9-5 desk job with Mobil to more that half a million dollars savings two years after, with no registered business to his name, having been questioned for money laundering and 'white powder' distribution not minding .

Chief (Dr. ) Jimoh Ibrahim attended Obafemi Awolowo University where he obtained the Bachelor of Law degree, and, subsequently, the Masters degree in Public Administration (with Distinction). Thereafter, he attended the prestigious Harvard University , Massachusetts , USA and obtained a combined Masters degree in Law and International Tax. He was called to the Nigerian Bar as Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria

http://jimohibrahimonline.com/

.

Is it possible to be called to the Nigerian bar without going to Law School? Am I missing something?

The Council of Legal Education runs the Nigeria Law School and all persons who have obtained a University degree in law and want to practice as lawyers in Nigeria, must attend the Nigerian Law School.

Admission into the Nigeria law School is also open to persons who have passed the final Bar Examinations of the English, Scottish or Irish Bar or the Solicitor's Final Examinations of England, Scotland or Ireland.

After a course of study at the Nigeria Law School, the student who passes the final - Bar Part II - examinations receives a certificate from the Council of Legal Education and is then Called to the Bar by the Body of Benchers as provided by the Legal Practitioners Act. This is followed by enrolment as a Legal Practitioner at the Supreme Court of Nigeria

Before the setting up of the Nigeria Law School, all the persons enrolled to practice law in Nigeria were trained in England mostly as Barristers at the various Inns of Court.

In advanced democracies and well organised states, the Government, not some fly-by, overnight company, collects tax. They dont need a 'Toronto-Chicago-GCI-Motherless-Stateless-Druggy, consultant to their job for them. The Lagos State Government can set up their own ABC and then run it for far less, leaving more money for state projects.

What the phock is ABC doing to deserve N2 Billion plus from Lagos State government, EVERY MONTH.

One person, deducting N 2 Billion from the IGR/month, leaving 16 million+Lagosians to feed on the remaining N12 Billion. Talk about a real progressive, just what Awo would have done. grin

And No, he is not an accountant. he studied international Taxation at Harvard; a certificate course I am thinking. Dont think it was a degree course, just some expensive padi-padi course to shore up his 'heavy weight' cred in 'Corporate Nigeria'

If you now talk of monitoring the real sector, there will be a lot of jobs for Nigerians to do. I have proposed to Chief (Olusegun) Obasanjo and I charged N20 million, but baba shouted at me and he did not want to pay the fee, so, I did not want to give him the key. I said upgrade the Board of Internal Revenue to a full-fledged ministry; call it Ministry of Revenue, direct state governments to also upgrade their inland revenues to full-fledge ministry and the country will be better.

The disgraceful feud being discussed is not surprising to observers like me. This self destructive behaviour of the Yorubas is why one of their sons, Chief H. Ogunde wrote a play and a song titled Yoruba Ronu (Yoruba think)

Here's is my rendition of one or two stanzas from the song (pardon me for the typos) :

Yoruba nse ra won nitori owo
Yoruba nj'irawon lese nitori ipo

won gbe'bi fun alare, won gbe are fun eni'bi
won pe ole ko wa ja, won tun pe oloko wa mu (dem call tief make him come steal from farm, then come call farmer to come catch de tief)

ogbon ti won da togbe won dele ola    (na de sense wey carry dem reach top of de mountain)
ogbon na lo pada wa si gbe won san le  (wey come back troway dem for valley)

The last two lines should be instructive to Tinubu and other political jobbers lurking arround this thread. Eko ile, se iwo mo yoruba ka - se you sabi read Yoruba?

How are your questions connected to the points I made? I said Tinubu could have gained more by ignoring the Tribune and you are asking me if I was in Lagos when Tinubu was governor or whether I saw billboards. What is wrong in Tinubu riding Awo's coattails? If Awo's children and grand-children were not up to the task, what is wrong with someone else filling the void?

How? you said Tinubu would have gained more if he had ignored HID. My point is that, he would have lost more, not gain. Make no mistake about it, without  Awo's name, BAT is nothing. He is lucky that the Awo family allowed him use that name without ever challenging him. That is how the  AD came into power using, Awo's name that is.

From the very start, he had always wanted to present himself as the 'Arole' Awolowo. He did not succeed much outside of Lagos because Bola Ige was the star and of course no one, and NO ONE, not even Soyinka, could have gone head to head with Bola Ige. Reason why he had to wait till now to exert his swagz. Besides campaigning with his name, he literally spends millions of naira crafting his public image right down to the final detail in the persona of Awo; hence my Bilboard reference. Meaning, for someone who has used Awo's name for personal glory, it would have been suicidal for him politically to ignore HID. For Someone with NO REAL MOTHER, apart from  her 'surrogate mother,' Abibatu Mogaji, ignoring HID awolowo would have detracted from his Awo cred, not Add to it as you wrongly claimed. It was so important for him to be seen and accepted like Awo, "acquir[ing] a signature cap, the ‘Awo glasses’ and even buying an ‘Asiwaju’ title" from Oyekan besides, he had to erect billboards to drive home his message, that Tinubu = The new Awolowo. Not minding the broom logo on his party emblem and the use of Awo's trademark insignia, Action.

And yes, I asked you about your familiarity with his tenure in Lagos to gauge your understanding of the power HID Awolowo wields in the SW. If only you knew that, she is the closest thing we (SW) have to Awolowo;  the import of her status as the Yeye Oodua of Yorubaland, and that her image and influence loom larger than what an "out of touch," foreign- born, non-native speaker of the Yoruba language could grasp from just reading about her on the internet.
If only you knew, you would not have posted this: Tinubu would have actually even gained more by ignoring Tribune/HID.

And I hope you know why the article was written. This article was meant to achieve three things:

1) To gauge the public's state on where he, Tinubu, stands WRT Awolowo
2) De-mystify Awo's influence while elevating Tinubu's image in our consciousness
3) To achieve what was articulated in the last paragraph of the article.

Because moving forward, it is clear, very clear that only two people could 'coronate' the next 'Awo;' HID Awolowo & Olubuse II.

Tinubu knows this quite well; hence, this Op-ed, to force HID's hands before she dies.

Geddit.

If Awo's children and grand-children were not up to the task, what is wrong with someone else filling the void?

What void are we talking about?

He could have come out immediately with his birth certificate to prove them wrong but that would have been a wrong move. Sometimes, you give a enemies enough rope so that they can hang themselves.

I am sure Obama would only be so glad to take credit for that; Obama roasting Donald Trump at the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner  was exactly why Donald trump dropped out of the race. As if, Obama providing the long form of his birth certificate dampened the spirit of the birthers. If I were you, I'd spend time listening to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs et al before coming to that conclusion.

Also, I would take some time talking to real life conservatives, tea-partiers, conspiracy theorists and some red-heads before ascribing to Obama the power and influence he would be all too eager to not want to have.

1. I suspect people are blaming Tinubu because the newspaper in question is one of his corporations. You have to accept that was an uncouth way to attack Awo's legacy. Most Nigerian journalists don't even know how to do their jobs properly. A better writer would have written an article that focused on his family's assciation with the bad guys without getting into personal attacks.

2. There are people who defend Tinubu on NL. I used to be against Tinubu myself but I have to admit that he has done some good. Tinubu would have actually even gained more by ignoring Tribune/HID.

3. They have been calling Tinubu all these names but did the name-calling stop him giving a resounding beating to PDP? Sometimes, a leader has to be the bigger person. He got down to fight and defeat the PDP; believe me there is no sense in jumping into the ocean to fight a drowning man while you are on safe land.

4. I can not and will not excuse the behaviour of the Awo family in becoming PDP's mouthpiece.

5. You may be right that this may not hurt Tinubu but nobody really knows. No one can see into the future. Yes they supported Tinubu today but do you know who they will support tomorrow. Can you see how irrelevant OBJ is today?

6. Tinubu has every right to defend himself but Tinubu actions today don't affect just Tinubu; they affect all his followers and supporters. He has to think and act like a leader. My take

1. Awo was his own man and his children should be free to live their own lives. No doubt Awo would be disappointed with SOME of the choices SOME of his children have made. Hobnobbing with PDP shouldn't be what Awo's family should be doing. They might have been forgiven if the mainstream party was a party that delivered rather than being a party of thieves.

Hobnob = Socialize and interact

So you expect the Yeye Oodua of Yorubaland to ostracize all the Yorubamen/women in PDP just because they are in PDP, even though the PDP is a socialist party with goals that are congruent with Awo's?

So the Yeye Oba of The Source should have turned OGD and Olurin away when they came visiting her?  Interesting!

No wonder Jesus never associated with sinners.

3. Mama HID is in her 90s; does anyone know how lucid she is? It is not impossible that she isn't aware of what is going on around. She may not know the widely held perception of OGD in Nigeria. There may be a member(s) of the family who are profiting from aligning with PDP but using the old woman as a front. I mean seriously, she may not be current with whats going on in Nigeria

You mean she did not know how OGD is perceived in the North? Why is that even important?

Questioning her lucidity? Interesting! Anyway, just so you know, old age is not a disease.

6. The wholesale rejection of PDP does not mean wholesale endorsement of Tinubu; Tinubu still has to deliver. Yoruba people say "eje ka le eyele lo na, ka to bo a f'abo fun adie". Yoruba people ignored his past transgressions so as to chase out the pirates deceiving party. To whom much is given, much is expected.

Wholesale = completely? how did you come to that?

you mean:

ACN's 30% of counted votes in OYO = wholesale/complete rejection of PDP inOyo?

ACN's 52% in Ogun = Wholesale/complete rejection of PDP in Ogun?

ACN's less than 20% showing in Ondo = Wholesale rejection of PDP in Ondo?

ACN's 40% showing in Kwara = wholesale rejection of PDP in Kwara?

Interesting; yet another grand cliché from Montaigne turns out to be true; that, it is possible to be able to write brilliantly and present points cogently and not be wise.

Do you mean:  ka le eleyoro lo, ka to wa fabo fun adie or ka le eleyoro lo, ka to fabo fun adie

Eleyoro = Fox

dayokanu:

Abacha's rule was anti democracy cos he benefited from an annulled mandate and all Progressives stayed out of it.

Gowon was also anti-democracy. But Awolowo served to save the country. He served as the Finance minister when his expertise was needed. That is his greatest contribution to Nigeria, arguably of course.

Babatope is a progressive. Tai Solarin worked with IBB's government. And the last time i checked, Tai Solarin was a progressive, even more so that usurpers like Bola Tinubu.

Evil thrives when good people keep silent. Babatope by responding to the call of his nation would have been commended, not excommunicated, by Awo.

The lsit goes on, what about Jakande?

Awo would have been a member of NADECO and instructed anyone to reject any poisoned chalice from Abacha but Babatope joined in the looting and r@pe on democracy and peoples mandate.

The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) was formed  by a broad coalition of Nigerian democrats, who called on the military government of Sani Abacha to step down in favor of the winner of the June 12, 1993 election, M. K. O. Abiola

Simply stated, it was a Pro-Abiola group, whether Awo would have joined is very very very debatable. We cant be that sure. We all know that Awo and Abiola werent on good terms.

Whether Awo would have accepted Tinubu's drug money is also up in the air. We just cant be sure. The notion that Awo would have joined NADECO is at best speculation, and nothing more that mere conjecture.

Tinubus company provides a service to lagos State and he gets paid for it, If you have a problem with it, Face those who  gave him the contracts.

Maybe. But is it on a quid pro quo basis? The issue here is involves reconciling his values and actions WRT to his well crafted public image. Its all about the principle. Or have we suddenly become less principled as a people because of money?

Bola Ige wrote a constitution for a political Party and Uncle Bola left it when he saw that the wolves have descended on the party Something Awo would have done.

Not really.  Bola Ige wrote the PDP constitution because he was asked to. He left with Pa Adesanya to ANPP because they were under the impression that plans had already been concluded to make Ekwueme President, something Bola Ige was against. Bola ige wanted to be the president. Bola ige left for his own selfish interest, not because he didnt like the characters of the major players in PDP then.

Do you know how Ayo Adebanjo is perceived in the SW now, Can he even win elections in his backyard? What happened to those AD men? Can anyone point to any AD rep or even councillor in the whole SW? Thats how much value they have right now.

It really doesnt matter how he is perceived. The point is that Ayo Adebanjo is an Awoist. Period. Bola Ige was disgraced right there in the middle of Enuwa at Ooni's palace. We can also argue that Ifes/Yorubas did not like Ige. which would be 'untrue'. Perception is perception, not representative of reality.

HID is an Awolowo doesnt necesarily mean she share the ideologies of Awo the only thing she shared was his bed.

Well, from what we know, HID is the closest thing we have to Awolowo.  Awolowo's most successful protege was/is Bola Ige and when Bola Ige aligned with YCE ( remember the much publiced D'Rovans saga), HID was on hand to lend her support. If Bola Ige = Awolowo, HID = Bola Ige, then it only makes sense to conclude that  Awo = HID= Bola Ige

Was Abiola ever an Awoist? If Abiola were to be Alive he would have been a PDP member.

No No No. Abiola contested on the SDP platform. SDP = Social Democratic Party.

Emphasis on the Social and Democratic parts of SDP. AWO was a Welfarist Capitalist

Whether Abiola would have joined the PDP is questionable. We just dont know.  Abiola wa an idealist/trained accountant, he believed in the power of the market, no doubt, but then he came from a big family, a poor one for that matter, hence his socialist leaning.

From what we know of him, he probably would have associated with Bola Ige, since Bola ige is a Social Democrat, just like Soyinka. This is all confusing, I know. I hope you get my point .To successfully Analyze which party Awo, and Abiola, would have joined in the present dispensation, requires an intellectual operation of immense dialectical skills.

PDP is bad and anyone in SW PDP is bad, What good can come out of a party that has Thug Obanikoro, Assasin Omisore, Irresponsible Akala, Murderer OGD, Ex convict Bode tewonde George,  Amala Politics Adedibu and Father of b@5tards OBJ

Lets just say, you did not mean to say that. I will let it pass.

That is something you'd expect from, say, Ileke, not you. I am sure you know more than that!

Politics / Tinubu, Afenifere - Who Anchors South West Interests? by Wizardofoz: 6:15pm On Jun 10, 2011
The post-election power sharing bun fights among the various geopolitical zones are, indeed very intriguing. Of particular interest is the case of the South West where the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, zoned the post of Speaker, House of Representatives.

In fact, it was supposed to be a two-cornered tussle between two ranking members of the House from the Zone, Hon. Mulikat Adeola_Akande and Hon. Muraina Ajibola.

However, the voting pattern of the electorate in the South West during the general elections suggested that the PDP was no longer wanted there. The electorate of the zone decisively voted out all PDP governors. They returned only one senator and six members of the House of Reps on the PDP platform. The rest were given to the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo States and Labour Party, LP, in Ondo State.

The PDP had performed very well in other zones, including South_South, South East, North East, North Central and North West (especially outside the presidential election). Majority of the people of the South East felt that keeping the post of Speaker in the South West, in spite of their low regard of the PDP, was misplaced, as some of the members of the House from their Zone wanted the post.

But the Presidency's hasty offering of the post of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to the South East and appointment of a preferred candidate of the Zone in the person of Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, initially took the wind from the sail of their agitation for the post of Speaker.

Working arrangement

That, however, did not stop the chief campaigner for the post, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, rallying the rest of his colleagues from the zone in getting into a working arrangement with their peers from the North, where Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, was determined the "unfair" PDP zoning would not stand.

On Monday, June 6, 2011 when the seventh Session of the House of Representatives was inaugurated, the zoning agenda of the ruling party was shoved aside, as Tambuwal scored 252 votes as opposed to 90 votes given to Adeola-Akande to emerge Speaker. Ihedioha also emerged as the Deputy Speaker. Already, the Senate had returned four-term Senator David Mark as President of the Senate, while Senator Ike Ekweremadu was voted as his Deputy.

The net effect of this was that the South West Zone, which had always enjoyed a place of pride since the return of our democracy in 1999 (when it produced the President till 2007 and Speaker, House of Reps till 20110) found itself suddenly nowhere to be found in the line of official protocol.

The Tinubu factor

The failure of the South West to clinch the post of Speaker was not necessarily a result of any gang_up against the South West by other zones - as such. Rather, it was purely a play of democratic dynamics that led to it. The South West has the second largest number of seats in the House of Reps, and majority of them were won by the ACN in the last elections. While the defeated PDP camp wanted the Speaker's seat for the Zone, the triumphant ACN did not want the PDP to have it.

They did not want to risk having a stump of the Party in the South West ranking high in the PDP Federal Government and posing any threat to their hold on power in the Zone. Thus, they decided to support Tambuwal's quest for the post.

For the ACN leadership, building a solid national party that would in future present it as a credible alternative to the PDP was more important than helping their ethnic group to clinch a high office in the legislature.

The ACN leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has since 1999 displayed uncommon vision and political savvy. He knows how a short-term gain could torpedo a long-term strategic advantage - and how to sidestep it. In 1999, he was just one of the six Alliance for Democracy, AD, governors of the South West.

Towards 2003 when President Olusegun Obasanjo, who had no political base in the zone, sought re-election, he entreated the Yoruba socio_political umbrella, the Afenifere, to support him.

The AD governors then were high ranking Afenifere leaders. Five of them - Bisi Akande of Osun State; Niyi Adebayo of Ekiti State; the late Adebayo Adefarati of Ondo State; Olusegun Osoba of Ogun State and Lam Adesina of Oyo State, offered to support Obasanjo for president while keeping their posts for second term as governors.

It was only Tinubu of Lagos that distanced himself from the arrangement. For his recalcitrance, President Obasanjo mobilised all instruments of federal power - including starving the local councils of their legitimate federal allocations.

Tinubu hunkered down and eventually overcame. He left the AD and joined the effort to found the Advanced Congress of Democrats, ACD, which later renamed itself the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, when the party came under the full control of Tinubu. One after the other, the ACN won a string of court victories that brought Edo, Ekiti and Ondo into its fold after the 2007 polls.

By the time the 2011 elections turned the corner, most expectations were that the remaining two South West states - Ogun and Oyo, would fall into the ACN basket, and they did. The party made big impressions outside the South West, especially in Benue and Anambra States where they won many House and senatorial seats.

An interesting outcome of Tinubu's political perseverance is that his former colleague South West governors and Afenifere chiefs who could not resist short-term goodies in the Obasanjo presidency - Adesina, Osoba, Akande and Adebayo - are now his followers in the ACN.

Building a strong political party

Right now, Tinubu's ACN is intent on building a strong political party with national appeal. In doing so, he is careful to learn the lessons of history. He does not want the ACN to be seen in the colours of the Awoist Action Group, AG, which was perceived to be a "tribalist" political party.

This informs the support of the Party elected members from outside the South West to be placed in prominent positions to enable the ACN grow in other parts of the country. Otherwise, the ACN members of the Senate and the House of Reps from the South West have the number and clout to produce Minority Leaders in both chambers of the National Assembly. Perhaps, the Party has decided to make the necessary sacrifices to achieve a bigger objective in the future.

But, just as in the past, not every political interest group in the South West appears to go along with this vision. The Afenifere, which had supported Obasanjo with many of the children and relations of its leadership being offered jobs in that regime, is up in arms against what they perceive as the unlawful exclusion of their zone from the power sharing arrangement in the PDP.

Indeed, the factional leader of the Odua People's Congress, OPC, Dr. Frederick Faseun, described what happened on the floor of the House of Reps as the "marginalisation" of the Yoruba people and their "excision" from Nigeria.

Between these socio-cultural interest groups and Tinubu's ACN there is a divergence of interests in the unfolding power sharing processes. Afenifere and OPC are non-partisan platforms and agitators for the interest of the Yoruba people. On the other hand, Tinubu and the ACN are the custodians of the political trust and mandate of the people of the South West.

They are the ones who know the meaning of the voting pattern of the people of the Zone in the 2011 general elections.

Political promised land

They know that the Yoruba people voted out the PDP and voted in the ACN to lead them to the political Promised Land. They also understand the "poisoned chalice" tucked under the Speaker seat offered by the PDP. They know that beneath the innocent rose a hideous serpent could be coiled and ready to strike. They know that eating on the same table with the ruling party was the hammer with which the AD and the All Nigerian People's Party, ANPP, were struck down.

The sacrifices that Tinubu and his Party are making will place enormous debt burden on the nation to listen whenever the leader of the Party (and the zone, Tinubu) make any demand on behalf of the Zone.

As the second largest political party unsullied by sweet_tooth prebends of the ruling PDP, Tinubu and the ACN are taking up a higher moral ground to assert themselves with great impact. Nothing that is important will be done by the PDP regime without their good graces being solicited and secured.

In the days ahead, the nation will find out if the ruling Party in the South West (ACN) and the socio=cultural umbrellas (Afenifere and OPC) will reach agreement on how to approach federal political issues or continue to run at cross-currents as in the instant case.

dayokanu:

Awo is known to be fervent in the advancement of the Yoruba cause and you can be an Awoist by aligning with OBJ, Bode George, Omisore, OGD, Adedibu, Akala etc.

Omatseye was on point, Awo is not alive but we know what he cannot stand. Awo would have excommunicated Ebenezer babatope for the Abacha rendezvous, Awo would have reprimanded anyone who romanced with any of those PDP rogues

I agree with Omatseye on all counts even on his word usage

I guess Awo would have welcomed Tinubu and congratulated him for withdrawing N2B from lagos account in the name of advancing Yoruba cause

And Also, he would have "excommunicated" Bola Ige for writing PDP's constitution and serving in OBJ's government, since Awo did not serve Gowon.

And he would have "excommunicated" Ayo Adebanjo for the OGD rendezvous. And he would have "excommunicated" Soyinka and castigate him for his "rendezvous" with IBB

And, Tinubu is more Awo that HID Awolowo right? interesting!

Abiola would probably have disowned his daughter for joining forces with PDP, init?

PDP is bad because the people in PDP are bad. Gbenga Daniel is bad because he is in PDP, not because he started off in AD, not because he was the youth leader of UPN in his undergraduate years at UNILAG, not because he embodies all that we like about AWO and Awojobi. He is bad simply because his is in PDP?

Interesting!
