Bro, its alright, i understand you now smiley smiley. Working with people who share same interest with me would be super cool. I would love to work with you. At the moment, much of what i am doing is basically laying foundation for core features. When i get to the point where i begin the addition of features, i would contact you. I would have liked to test your OS, but i dont have an Android device.  sad

*dhtml:

@DJMAS314, kudos for your great work. @Worldbest, please dont slow down on your work at all.
Not even if this dude's own has got gazzillions of features.

I think you need to get the core of the OS to be very good. Then features can come later on.

Just like that SSO stuff i made - is a kinda core on its own - i can add like 100 sites to it theoritically,
but i will need to move it to a dedicated server, do SSL and all that. Just saying.

Work on application requirements, multi-tasking, memory management, testing network speed
and all those basic things. Consider regular OS and also the strange things about internet such
as asynchronous nature - Nigeria's special internet.

Building an offline OS is way easier compared to building an online OS.

Exactly what i am doing  , building the core  smiley. If the core is weak, then apps would pretty much suck. I have 60% of the OS design worked out already. I certainly don't see myself slowing down (except when back dey pain me  grin). Coding this stuff is quite exciting and challenging.

Still working on the same configuration manager. Now you can change the home screen background image and position it (fill, fit, center, stretch)

Hello all,

Glad to see lots of people interested and investing time in the html5 os idea. I have already published an html5 os to the android market that runs offline, im currently developing the iOS and Blackberry versions. By looking at your jpegs and threads I can tell that I could help out alot; as the features of my current free build exceed your standard. I'm looking to collab with anyone in the growth of a html5 system that rivals linux, windows, and mac as a mobile operating system that runs on any device, I applied for a provisional patent as a college project but I want this to be fully open source. I've included more features that i could list here. All of the ideas that you pretty much mention, i have either implemented or plan to implement in the future releases. I would love to work with a community that will help work together to make something that is amazing. Although my project might be alittle more advanced in style and functionality i definitely feel like i can learn from working with like-minded individuals. So whatever you do dont quit cause your not alone. I worked on my idea for a year and a half before i got to this point. If people like us work together who knows what we can accomplish,  here are some screenshots and a link to the android app. Feel free to email me at DJMAS314@GMAIL.COM

smiley Concerning your OS, nice job bro. I am certainly working hard to reach you grin. But i have to say that i feel you came out pretty wrong. I don't know if it is me, but its not proper to compare your project with one that is just starting out. I feel like you dissed me and my infant project (which is only a few days old). But still would like to work with you and many other people soon. For now, i need to build this thing alone, i want something solid before i make it open source. Again, great work!!! grin

Still working on the Preference Manager. I have been doing some thinking about how applications should be designed. I thought about enforcing a standard for interface design but that would hinder developer freedom. What i was thinking:

A template for application interface.

This would prevent apps from looking like websites which is good. But, it means applications would have same look. I don't think i/developers would like that. Since the
technology for development is still the same as the one for websites there should be no need for a template. Developers should have the freedom to code as they like.
I think this is where Carbyn got it wrong (based on their introductory video) and google got it right with their extensions.

So, applications may look like websites if the developers choose to. I will provide recommendations that can be adopted. I think this approach, will make the set up of
existing apps easy.

Right now, PHCN has not been nice for days. Hopefully, by the weekend i'd be done with the preference manager.

difficult for u ke. at all u will cope well but its not everything u'll use like i don't do .NET and C# even as i know it.

That is true. I don't see myself using .NET anytime soon. I would probably be using Java. I went to one IT centre (HIIT) to learn Java, instead i was teaching myself C# with their PC (i had no laptop/pc then) grin.

*dhtml:

I tried going to all those schools then, but i was not able to for one reason or the other. That was why i had to work harder to prove myself - because back then -i used to have inferiority complex that i can never be better than those that went to NIIT then later on APTECH.

Hard work sure pays in this field. The only thing i need from them is just the certificate/diploma grin I wish i had people around me that would make me feel inferior, the people around don't even get me - They call me 'boring nerd' grin.

Updates

I am about to start the preference/configuration manager. This is where users can edit the configurations/preference of applications (including native app). So if a user wants to change the home screen's background image and background position, it would be done in the configuration manager. I chose to start this now because i want to add the ability to change the homescreen's background image and position.

- Added Mini-Mode which is 1000px by 600px.
- Single User log in and log off
- Ability to minimize OS window with Escape key
- and some other small small things

I am getting to that point where i would begin to write the Developer SDK and add my secret ideas. I need to write a dialog/modal library, wouldn't want apps to use the ugly alert(). This is 11.50PM, started coding from 11:00AM, chai, my back  cry cry make i watch film sef or do xtra-cool with that igbo gir  grin grin

I get your point, but the flash won't be on the interface or anything specific html app can load flash and even trigger flash method to perform an action and retrieve the data back to html5 data. I use it sadly my blog is down I'll send the doc along the explaination. An e.g is grooveshark the site is html but flash under the hood plays the songs but the interface is in html and js.

Alright, please send me the docs and explanations. With this bridge, application would call flash methods for advance features lacking in HTML5. You don't need any sort of interface work. The bridge would make access to the camera and speakers easy for skype like apps. If what I have said is what you mean, then oboy I am down with it. smiley

I was gonna ask the following questions privately but just decided to ask openly and some things i wanted to know if u like the idea?

1. Is it gonna run locally as HTML5 Offline or Online.
if Online then cool, i was thinking we could bridge Flash and HTML5 OS thus increasing and enabling far more advanced features, for example the music player we all know not every browser supports the WebAudio API for HTML5 but imagine i created an app called "ihateCrapsongs" html5 widgets which once it instantiated which embed a simple Flash Object let's call the Flash Object a proxy that is hidden and via ExternalInterface the JavaScript can communicate with the SWF and thus play songs since all Browsers support Flash. that way far more advanced features i will send a word on some basic guides for creating interface for author to create plugins. @dhtml as always the guru that knows his stuff.

Yes, the OS will have support for both offline apps (packaged) and online app (hosted). I like your idea, but i think the web is trying to move away from flash, and developers can still use flash in their apps. Although, i don't know flash and i am guessing that you talking about adding more features to HTML5. Don't you think the bridge can just be written as a library/plugin?

Thats true. I love challenges.

--

Now the OS, runs on its own independent window and refreshes the display whenever it is re-sized. This made me realize that the OS can also have two modes

1. Full Screen
2. Mini Screen (900x600)

Full screen would be suitable for applications that require the whole computer resolution. While mini screen would be for apps that do not need the whole screen e.g Chat apps, games (Ludo, X and O, etc)

The last time i used style-style  grin to play with someone's iPad, it had this feature.

Seriously, this is good job! I'm looking forward to running your "OS" on my system very soon.

Thank you very much. Very soon we'll all be testing an alpha version smiley

I will be making a small change to the way the OS starts. At the moment, the app starts in a new pinned tab. This is OK, but I want apps to run in full screen mode (without pressing F11) and not obstruct the users normal browsing experience. So I have decided to make the OS start in a new popup window which is totally fullscreen and independent from all windows. But the OS will still have full control over the popup and all windows. The user can switch to the OS by bringing it up from the taskbar, by clicking a shortcut icon on the desktop, by tapping a key while viewing a website and by performing a mouse gesture.

Right now I dey for church. Hopefully, I would complete this by the end of today.

Have you done any reading about possibilities with Windows 8? It allows you to build native apps with HTML 5; if you haven't, download it and give it a whirl.
It should help you position your target market in ways you might not yet have thought possible.

Yes, i understand that windows 8 will let developers build native apps but i haven't really done much reading on it. I think this is one of the platform i need to consider because it may have negative effects on my work. I imagine developers preferring to build HTML5 Apps for windows 8 which would be much more powerful. I willl do more research on Window 8 HTML5 capabilities. Thank you for bringing this up.  smiley

Since i do not want scrollbars on apps, i made another script that would allow pages to be scrolled easily by placing the mouse over a specific element. The speed can be adjusted too.  Right now, i have not gone deep. This are what i have succeeded in doing

1. Install OS (Account Creation, File System Creation etc)
2. Home Screen

gameaddict:

@worldbest: Nice Idea.

A lot of developers are interested this at least concept wise and even though some big names and experience individuals have current working implementations, I see no reason why you shouldn't do it.

The one I currently use is being developed by the group who are responsible for VLC (media player and code library) and other cool projects.

It's also open sourced so you can learn a few things from it. Link: http://eyeos.tano.si/

Some thoughts though: While I do not expect things to remain the same, I doubt web operating systems will catch on if all they do is recreate what native OSs do. Their only advantage in this case being file access from anywhere.

I'm worried that some of the promise will be overlooked if we concentrate on this replication and that is why I like the idea of a cloud 'computing' in the strictest sense rather than what most use it for nowadays which is largely file storage. A lot of research is being done regarding processing all that is needed in the cloud and sending minute data to devices. This will especially be useful for tasks such as gaming. Imagine playing ps3 games on your nokia 3310 ( okay exaggeration, but I've got license to dream). How do we save the user the cost of processing?

I saw a research where something like an iphone was used for demonstration but I can't remember where.

Edit: here's a link: http://www.razorianfly.com/2011/02/28/in-the-future-your-iphone-could-run-ps3-games-video/

If we could do minimum hardware processing on our devices and have everything done in the cloud with low bandwidth requirements, that'd be heaven.

What I'm saying is that we have to look beyond emulating current systems when we proceed to the next generation. We have to decide what we want the future to look like.

PS: We dey miss u for game project page o.

Heeeey GA, how far now. I totally agree with you. We should not stop developing stuffs just because the big boys have done it.

My aim is not to recreate the native browser functionalities but to create a sort of platform where applications are built with HTML5. I want a situation where heavy internet users can go for days without minimizing their browsers. I know there are cloud OSs but only one was built on web technologies.

As per the game group, make una no vex. I try to learn one or two things but Web programming just takes the whole of my time.

Thanks for the explanation.
But my point is, he already stated his goals

1. Be able to launch apps right from the browser
2. Play Mp3 files from the browser.

Google's ChromeOS does these tasks admirably, so there's already a solution available. The underlying tech is secondary.

I would agree that the underlying tech is secondary. Like i earlier said, its not going to be like the normal OS. I think the people who created Carbyn also share similar vision with me.

dhtml .:

VEry funny. If you are serious about it, you will have done it first before putting it online.

Thats the reason why i have posted it. I believe it will help with my seriousness

pc guru:

Apps are sandboxed
Each JS App can created in its own Module so that it will not pollute another app.
e.g if the name of the Web OS was Html5
it wud be html5.os.app.HelloWorld which will be a literal object or can be anonymous function so that all codes in the the scope will only exist in the Module Context. its what Jquery uses to create plugins.

var module.context=(function(){

})(html5.os) //which html5.os is the Global Objects that hold datas u will want each user to have access to

That is the idea. Most of the principles i will be using will be custom. Like the web worker for thread. WebWorkers are still better that setTimeout cus the work on seperate processes. I am also aware of their problems. Thanks you very much for bring that up.

Very interesting concept! I wish you didn't put this online like this cause someone might just steal your idea.
Salmoneus:

I'm totally stealing this idea!! very nice lol. . .
pc guru:

knowing the typical Nigerians *developers* we have it will take more than an idea to develop it unless he posted the whole code, notice i asteriked the developers. i had an idea like that before but exactly like his,its big work so whoever is stealing it might as well collaborate with him. but Engineerd is right u should limit the ideas because we all know what people might do, esp sm1 like ***Master.  cool (looking for trouble).

I also asked myself minutes after i created the thread, i said "wb, why you come post your idea for everyone to see"  grin. But you see, i believe posting it online would make me work on it seriously, it would improve how i handle projects because i tend to get distracted easily. So now i know that if i fail to do it, someone else will take it up and that is my punishment.

Anyway, i am not really bothered about me exposing the idea. As PC Guru as stated, this is just the basic feature/plan. Plus, i believe that anyone who copies the idea is just going to be rushing things as he/she/they would not have done any research as i have. I've been working on the idea for months now till Carbyn beat me to it.

Also, it wont be bad to have good competition. Google and Bing exist, but we know who's king.

Now that this thread in on the front page, cold dey catch me.  grin cry

Now, i am working on the File System. By tomorrow afternoon, i am pretty sure i would have completed the installation codes.
