The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has disclosed that tertiary institutions promote ethnic and religious biases.

Kukah made this known on The Morning Show on Arise TV on Thursday.

The controversial cleric expressed dismay over the closure of doors to churches in universities in Northern Nigeria.

He said: “A mosque was constructed at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. I delivered a convocation lecture in Calabar three weeks ago. After my lecture, the Chief Imam of the University came to congratulate me. But as I speak to you, Usman Dan Fodio, who is over 40 years old, Bayero University, and other universities in Northern Nigeria have decided to close their doors to the possibility of churches being built in the universities across this country.

“All this fanaticism we are seeing is expressed in public life. If students in the university or at the point of their growing up are not allowed to integrate and interrelate, and if churches or mosques cannot be built across this country, then there is a problem.

“There was a time when Ahmadu Bello University had lecturers from different parts of the world. Now, look at what has happened to our universities across Nigeria. Our universities have become just mere incubators of ethnic jingoism.

“So, I do not know which funded Federal University that you will name that has a Vice Chancellor that is not a local boy.

“So the universities themselves have become playgrounds for the ambitions of the local elite. The question is why should a place of worship be a problem for a university? Whether it is for the Muslim students in Calabar or the Christian students in Sokoto.

“I approached the Minister of Education about this. I have a letter from the Nigerian University Commission. The universities in northern Nigeria have refused to implement this recommendation,” he revealed.

This is purely the work that Christian Association of Nigeria should address in the court of Law.
Our constitution allows free religion and gathering. No part of the nation can make a Law not consistent with the construction.

Bishop, don't identify the problem only, mobilize people to take it head long.

Public institution are created, backed, regulated and funded by a secular system so why should they adopt religions and even go ahead to fight wars with one another through school management?
It shows why the schools are weak and are suffering in terms of admin? Which Christian philanthropist will want to give a Muslim dominated and Christian restricting school board a building or donations or research grant?

They should keep it up please.

You shouldn't emphasize this as if it only happens in the North! It happens in many Southern states too (minus SW) where there are no mosques around in any of the higher institutions!

Some Northern states subscribe to Shar'ia laws which is approved by the state national assemblies!

And there's a pertinent issue this will also cause in the long run if outrightly allowed.

I went to a NPF compound to pray and i saw one NPF Mosque and one NPF Chapel.

The mosques is always crowded daily unlike the church. And this is due to more denomination crises in Christianity.

There are schools with many churches for each major Christian denominations!
Muslims on the other hand will have much less buildings in this regard.

Same Bishop that is clamoring for Church building will want his own denomination to take over the schools!
If RCCG/Winners takes over another casala go burst!
