This is quite embarrassing but i really need to know the difference between a 32 bit and a 64 bit os. All those online explanations no do me. I'd really appreciate it if someone can patiently itemise these differences for me.

32-bit os supports only applications that use data units up to 32 bits wide, but not larger than that. While a 64-bit os can support application data units up to 64 bits wide. A 64-bit os is better than 32-bit os because 64-bit uses memory more efficiently and decreases the amount of time spent using the hard disk. I don't like 32-bit processors because they can't use more than 4GB physical memory but d 64-bit can use up to 16terabites.

wow! For real? Thanks man. That's why I wanted an explanation from "home". Short but loaded!

But if you install 64-bit OS, many 32-bit software can't be installed in your pc since then..

And where did you get that false information? 64bit os can run 32bit softwares without any hitch 99.9% of the time. 32bit os CAN'T run 64bit applications.

I have a HP Pavilion dm4 which runs on a 32bit OS. It is 640GB HDD and 4GB ram expandable to 8GB. Are you suggesting that upgrading to a 8GB RAM will have no additional benefits on the laptop's performance?

Thanks.

Slightly off topic but I'm curious. . .did you get the laptop originally with the 32bit OS or it came with a 64bit OS which you removed to install a Windows 7 32 bit 0S?

I only ask cos most lapys (in the market) with the specs you listed (or above) are mostly 64bit. . .especially HP

Maybe HP now has a 32-bit os that is expandable from 4GB to 8GB, but the 64-bit os is expandable to 16terabites. Surely you know the difference btw 8gb and 16terabites. Also any application that requires 64-bit space cannot work on ur 32-bit os. This limits your usage to only 32-bit applications. But with a 64-bit os you can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.

Also the 64-bit os saves your hard-disk from much headache as it reduces the amount of time spent working on the hard-disk unlike the 32-bit os. 86-x64 all d way.

The emboldened is not completely true.

My Sisters laptop was a 64bit OS and some
of my 32bit softwares were not compatible so I had to install a 32 bit Windows 7 OS

My 64-bit os accepts 32-bit software. Also remember, wit a 32-bit os you can't use 64-bit software

Which application packages are more common? The 32 or 64 bits. And besides, for those of that depend heavily on softwares from C. V which versions are we most likely to come across?

64 bits operating system sucks in Nigeria because most of the software in Nigeria don't run well on them.

I had to wipe off the Windows 7 Premium 64-bit OS and install Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit OS. I don't have time hitting my head on the wall cos of the 64-bit OS.

I always get irritated when people bring their 64-bit Pavilion laptops to me for pimping. I fully agree with you.

Can I upgrade the RAM to 8GB now that I've wiped off the preinstalled OS?

Lol. . .thought as much.

Went to CV to buy a laptop with a friend early last month and most of the high-spec laptops were 64bit. At the end, he bought a Hp laptop with a 64bit Windows Home Premium OS which I removed to install a 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate OS when we got back to base

Bros, there are softwares that are strictly 32bit while 90% of 32bit softwares are universal. so when they specify, e.g autocad_x86. then it only runs on 32bit OS
Re: Difference Between A 32 And A 64 Bit Os by Elsquidme(m): 5:45pm On Jul 07, 2016
Gradually windows are kicking out 32bit os while PC manufacturers are putting a stop to 32bit hardwares. so as time goes on we may possibly have 128bit achitecture.

Okay let me open you guys eyes to something. operating systems are processor architecture word size are two different things similar but different. a processor that is 64bit supports both 32 os and 64 bit os while 32bit architecture only support 32 bit. and also 64bit doesn't support all 32 bit programs but it supports most of them. some old 32 bits programs wont work on a 64 bit processor. It mostly about the processor not the operating system because the operating system utilizes what the processor can offer.
