A friend of mine was faced with this situation this morning while actually going to the mechanic to fix a noise he experienced when braking. Suddenly, the brakes failed. Lucky enough he was not on high speed and the uncoming traffic was free. He was able to swave into the opposite lane and applied the hand brake to put the car to a halt.
Car Experts, Is there any alternative for this situation?

With a manual, you can shift into the lowest possible speed, and let the clutch out. That will pretty much slow the car down enough to stop. Engine braking.
With an auto, not much you can do, if you downshift, and the car's going quite fast, the transmission will most likely hold the higher ratio, regardless of the position of the shift. Logic would suggest you slam the shift into P, but that's a risky move. If the driven wheels lock up suddenly, it's possible to roll the car, and of course the transmission will be destroyed. 8 Likes |

yeah, for auto - handbrake
for manual, shift gear to 1, apply handbrake.
If on low speed when break fails, don't forget that the nearby road kerb or traffic island would also be of help. |

If you are going on a top speed and brake fails you can decide within a split second to put you car in reverse gear to save your life at least. Engine will definitely get damaged. 1 Like |

Put the car on neutral then try to control it
Option 2
Change to lower gear e.g from 4 to 2 then to 1. and try to control it with you leg off the accelerator.

For manual,changing to neutral gear is not advisable.As neutral makes the car to be more free,no more grip on the car and you can loose control of the car expecially when on high speed and going down a steepy road.Never never change to neutral. The best thing to do is to change to gear 1 and remove ur leg gently from the clutch until you completely free your ur leg from it.This will defintely slow down the car and you can then apply handbrake to bring the car to a complete halt. 2 Likes |

This topic is a reactive one. But what is required is a proactive measure.
Be proactive and not reactive.
1. don't wait for the brake to fail. Periodic maintenance is important.
2. don't drive at top speed. So if the brake fails or the tire bursts, damage or injury will not be low or minimal.
3. For manual gear, gradually switch from top to low gear, then to neutral. then hand brake.
4. For Auto gear, switch to neutral and gradually apply the hand brake.
I do not know what can be done if you are driving large/heavy duty vehicle such as trailer. 1 Like |

Manual- take ur leg off accelerator, clutch down dis wil slow ur vehicle a bit, change to lower gear, 5or4 to 2 try to accelerate d the vehicle wil lik staggered then change to 1 and accelerate a bit, dis wil slow ur vehicle down enough for hand break to function but at all time, ur life depends on ur clutch! |

Plss, don't try puttin' D car in reverse
U either try puttin' it 2 lower gear I.e 4rm 5-4,4-3,3-2,2-1
Or switch off D engine if goin' straight but steerim' wuld B strong 4 power steerin'
It will slow D car down...
U culd try hand brake turn (360) if u got large space n nerve |
