Chelsea’s roster is nearly ready to begin the upcoming Premier League season, but Wigan Athletic forward Victor Moses would be the final piece of the puzzle.

Fernando Torres is extremely talented, and Daniel Sturridge, at 22 years old, has considerable upside, but Moses is only 21 years of age. Adding him to the fold would provide much-needed depth on Chelsea’s attack while also adding upside for the future of the club.

Moses’ arrival is expected at some point for the Blues

Wigan reportedly value Moses at nearer £10m, and speculation has increased in the last 48 hours that the 21-year-old is poised to join Chelsea.

But Neil Fewings, who is the agent for Moses, has moved quickly to deny the reports.

“Reports that a £9m deal has been agreed between Chelsea and Wigan are not true,” Fewings said.

This should not stop the Blues from pursuing Moses. He’s a versatile offensive talent who has not reached his full potential yet. Allowing him to develop alongside the likes of Torres and Sturridge is an opportunity Roberto Di Matteo should not pass up without a fight.

Moses played for Crystal Palace from 2007-10, notching 58 appearances and 11 goals. After making the move to Wigan Athletic, he racked up 72 more appearances and eight goals.

He’s used at multiple positions, but his skills lend themselves to the wing. He’s a talented attacker who thrives in open space. He’s a bit undersized, but his agility in the open field allows him to create for his teammates.

Moses isn’t going to score 30 goals next season, and he’s not necessarily ready to bear the brunt of an entire Premier League attack, but Di Matteo cannot enter the season with the attackers on his current roster.

Sturridge and Torres are good, without a doubt, but they’re still only two players. If one were to get hurt or fail to produce, the Blues’ situation would be much worse.

Adding Moses to the fold would promote depth in the short term and production in the long term. He isn’t exactly cheap, but he’s worth the price if he’s developed properly.
