Minna-kaduna Railway Service Is Finally Up And Running! by thelastPope(m): 1:45am On Aug 29, 2012 |
Wow! Minna-Kaduna railway service has taken off finally after like centuries. Hmmm. The Lagos-Ibadan-kano fast rail contract has been signed with chinese firm CCECC. There's something really going on in the country. Its like the GEJ 2013 comment really holds a lot of promise. Source: AIT news. They even showed the trains and the inside looked really cool. The passengers were very happy about the service 5 Likes |

Nigeria Railway Corporation to commence full services on Lagos-Kano line The Nigerian Railway Corporation says it has rehabilitated 117 engines and coaches. The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) will soon commence full services on its Lagos-Kano route, the Managing Director, Seyi Sijuade, has said. He said the recent successful rehabilitation of 117 engines and coaches would enable the corporation to resume haulage and passenger services on the Lagos-Kano line.Mr. Sijuade said this in Minna on Sunday while rolling out the first phase of the rehabilitated engines and coaches for the Minna-Kaduna daily train services.“The Lagos-Kano service will start in a few weeks’ time and we intend to ply the route twice a week,” he said. Represented by the Director of Operations, Niyi Ali, the managing director attributed the successful restoration of train services in parts of the country to the “ingenuity of the corporation’s engineers and technicians”. He said that the effort of the staff in refurbishing the engines and coaches locally had helped to save cost.“We are going back to the good old days, where everything was done in-house. “A lot of these equipment are specialised equipment acquired by the corporation, but we are looking forward to a time when our staff will produce these things locally and we are starting now. “Compared to contract cost, these in-house refurbishments will save us a lot of money. It’s not just about the immediate savings, we are also talking about the long term benefits when we learn to do everything in-house,” he said. In his remarks, the Niger Commissioner for Transport, Abubakar Ahmed, appealed to the federal government to rehabilitate and upgrade the Baro railway line. “We are aware that the federal government is dredging the Baro River and the road there is terribly bad. So we are calling on the federal government to rehabilitate and upgrade the Baro railway station to aid the movement of people and goods,” he said. He said that the state government is working with the railway corporation to enhance rail services in the state. http://premiumtimesng.com/news/97831-nigeria-railway-corporation-to-commence-full-services-on-lagos-kano-line.html |

It was actually never down, so I wonder what we are celebrating. Just that The cabins/capsules were so dilapidated u would think it's for transportation of circus animals in India, yet people still travel on it that way. So unless new lines are built or new engines acquired claiming to rehabilitate those train is like rehabilitation of a MOLUE BUS instead of getting a new BRT BUS. 1 Like |

I hope there is demand to profitably sustain the Kaduna-Minna route. Given the pattern of movement of mass transit, I cannot help but feel this is another cheap appeasement of ethnocentric sections of the north. I believe an Abuja-Kaduna rail route would have been more profitable. I would have thought NRC will construct routes in order of their profitability. In any case, time will tell and hopefully everyone will be happy... 2 Likes |

To those who always ask how political decisions affect the price of garri, below is one of my favorite quotes from Bertolt Brecht ,but I have to paraphrase it to fit into the Nigerian context. "The worst illiterate is the political illiterate. He hears nothing, sees nothing ,takes no part in political life and always asks how political or economic issues affects the price of garri in the market. He doesn't seem to know that the price of garri, the cost of living, the price of beans ,of flour,of rent,of medicines all depend on political and economic decisions. He even prides himself on his political ignorance, sticks out his chest and asks how events affect the price of garri in the market. He doesn't know, the slowpoke, that from his political non-participation comes the thieving PDP politicians, the crook-in-waiting ACN politicians, the religious bigots at the CPC and the lackeys of exploitative multinational corporations" So next time you want to ask how political and economic news affect the price of garri, think again. 7 Likes |
