About 24 years of education, plus another 10-15 years of academic activity. Not just lecturing, but publishing in academic journals.
Then when a university has a vacant chair, you can apply to it.

@ op: you actually do not require that much time to become a professor! You can accomplish that in much lesser time. Please google the names Ayodele Awojobi. He was a professor in Mechanical Engineering, University θf Lagos at the age θf 35! Iya Abubakar, Professor in Mathematics, Ahmadu Bello University at the age θf 28! And Alia Sabur, world's youngest Professor! She is only 18! The first two names I mentioned, accomplished becoming a Prof. at those ages back in the days were education wasn't as flexible as it is now! I mean children these days spend as few as 8years in both primary and secondary schools combined! I have a friend who travelled to the UK for her masters in 2009 and was offered scholarship for PHD upon completion θf her masters! She was even receiving some monthly allowance from the british government! She is less than 30!

You should read up on biographies θf professors and get your inspiration and advice from their achievements. All you need really is determination.

Becoming a prof can take any number of years depending on how much good publications you can turn out.
Publishing in international journals will also improve your chances.

In some cases you can earn your Ph.d without doing an M.sc
In rarer cases, you can be made a professor without having a Ph.d.

A Ph.d is a specialist area in any field of study.
For you to be a prof you need to specialize in a specific area of your field.

Example, Sociology is a broad area of study.
You can therefore get a Ph.d in women studies, which is an area of Sociology.

That makes you a specialist in women studies.

You write papers and publish in journals, academic work relating to women studies.
With time you will become a professor (a guru) in women studies.

Basically, you need a Ph.d to teach.

However, people like Wole Soyinka do not have an academic Ph.d, what he has is honourary (given to him without the burden of academic work).
There are others like that who are brilliant and are made profs without Ph.d. Anyhow, you have to be really special.
