Nigeria V Japan (1 - 2) U-20 Women WC 3rd Place On 8th Sept 2012 by Nobody: 7:56am On Sep 05, 2012

Nigeria-Japan, Tokyo, 8 September 2012, 7.30am (Nigerian Time)

Runners-up in 2010, Nigeria will have to settle for a less prominent finish this time around, despite having arrived in Japan declaring their ambition to leave with the trophy. The best the African side can now hope for is third place, providing they do not spurn as many chances as in their recent outings, having required extra time to see off Mexico 1-0 in the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to USA in the last four.

As for the hosts, they remain heartbroken not to have been able to match the feats of Japan's senior side at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™. The Young Nadeshiko have nonetheless made history by advancing to the semi-finals for the first time in their history, and they will be eager to put a smile back on the faces of their supporters by taking bronze.

They have not disappointed the nation. They've given a good account of themselves even if they do win anything. I'm proud of them.

While We all appreciate the effort of our ladies, I sincerely I think it's time Africa pulls out from some of these world events especially sports and social competitions and manage the best of what we have at home within us. Its a millennium now and we have not been able to prove ourselves to the world! Its mind boggling that since 1930 Africa is yet to play a semi final at the world cup yet we keep international club business booming. I think the sooner we resign our fate the better for us. Let's resolve to remain at home and save ourselves another millennium of shame, hopelessness, wastefulness and intermittent heartbreaks occasioned by our BLACKwardness! Well I wish them bronze all the same.

In one of my previous posts, I hinted about the pending demise of Nigeria’s U-20 Women soccer team at the semi-final stage in Japan. Like everything Nigerians do, individual’s glorification tends to take the center stage. Soccer is a team’s sport and also thinking person’s game. To win a match is paramount in game of soccer not the number of goals or who scored the winning goal. Unfortunately, Nigerians like all Africans are burdened with the weight of individual glorification coupled with ignorant praise singers.

The so-called attackers on the Nigerian side hold onto the ball forever expecting to shine by dribbling an opponent. In most cases, these useless attackers loose possession of the ball and give opponent’s defenders time to regain ground. In addition, Nigerians or Africans should always bear in mind they are playing against 12 instead of 11 because in most instances the referees tend to side with their opponents.

Nigeria is technically the "home" team, though obviously Japan is the host nation.
