In a renewed effort to ensure sanity in the industry, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) may soon crackdown on a number of filling stations in Lagos and environs that indulge in under-dispensing of petroleum products

THISDAY gathered that the planned raid followed series of complaints that some filling stations, mostly those located in Lagos metropolis dispensed less quantity of fuel to petroleum product users by adjusting their pumps.

The oil and gas regulatory agency recently warned that marketers that indulge in sharp practices such as product under-dispensing or selling substandard petroleum products would be sanctioned and in addition, have  their licences withdrawn.

Also, as part of measures put in place to ensure transparency in downstream operation, the Director of DPR, Mr. Osten Olorunsola, had directed marketers to dismantle back-loading pumps at their depots to stem round-tripping of petroleum products.

Other measures listed by the agency included: full deployment of trucking implementation policy: digitalisation of critical retail outlet operational data and migration of license administration to electronic processing platform through the National Data Repository ( NDR), upgrading of the operational standards of depot facilities, installation of metering facilities at the inlet pipeline headers for adequate products accounting, and the replacement of fixed roof with floating roof for all premium motor spirit (PMS) storage tanks to eliminate environmental hazard.

About 100 filling stations were sealed in January this year alone by the DPR for offences ranging from products under-dispensing, hoarding and selling of products above government approved pump prices.

Some filling stations in the Federal Capital Territory were sealed early this year for under-dispensing products to customers.

At the Kuje area of Abuja metropolis, the DPR shutdown some filling stations for short-changing its customers of 3.7 litres of petrol in every 10 litres purchased.

Two affiliate outlets of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation belonging to Unyigye Oil and Gas were also sealed when it was discovered that their gauges fell below the tolerant limit of 0.2 litre in every 10 litres dispensed.

Please ALL Mobil Filling stations. I have been cheated at Mobil Apapa (By the Post-Office), Mobil Anthony (on Ikorodu Road opp Deloitte-Williams House) and Mobil VI (on Ahmadu Bello Way). I have sworn off them until something is done about it.

People responsible for under-dispensing fuel in filling stations should be arrested and prosecuted. It is a criminal act and should be treated as such. Sealing their station alone is not enough.
