Imo state can easily become the strongest state, economically in the Eastern Region by doing one thing.

Imo needs to link Owerri to Umuahia by rail, and eventually Owerri-Orlu (or Mgbidi)-Ontisha

That means the flow of tge majority of all commercial activity in the SE will run through Owerri and make it (and Umuahia) the connector of SE, SS, NW, and NC. This is a larger economic net than NE SW especially if the link to PH is backed by popular seaport.

But Sam Mbakwe is upgraded to International or scaled up to house the bulk to domestic and the the but depots are modernized, Owerri could suprass every city in the region and begin eyeing Lagos.

I did the math and. Rail from Owerri to Umuahia would be no less than 29-40 million USD.

If this is done, anyone that wants to access the SS, SE, NC, NW and Chad republic markets in one go will compete to be in Owerri

I am from imo but truth be told, Anambra is the most developed state in igboland. Imo and Abia are the two worst states in southern Nigeria.

Owerri is more or less a glorified village littered with dilapidated roads and filthy environment.

Okigwe and Orlu needs to come back to life in terms of urban regeneration with a 6 lane highway crisscrossing the two towns which will empty into Owerri . Roads are the lifeline of every city ,if the roads are bad the city will die. We need a lot of critical infrastructure in Imo state

Your wish can happen, after all, Imo state still has Only-Owerri-Is-Imo-State type of governor, as it has had since 2007.
The deplorable conditions of urban infrastructures in Orlu and Okigwe are now a source of shame to well meaning human beings.
Why will any reasonable state governor go into building rail lines to connect Owerri to wherever, with the federal allocations to Imo state and its local government areas; whereas the two old cities in Imo state - Orlu
and Okigwe - are abandoned because no governor has emerged from either of them since 2007?

Urban regeneration is created by rail. Enugu, Umuahia and Aba are what they are because of rail. Without rail, all 3 are villages. It's a vital ingredient to creating a modern city. If commerce is not traversing through a city, it will stay where it's at. Commerce does not travese through Okigwe. This rail can connect Okigwe to ports.

If I want to make cars, or heavy industry and there are No rails, I will never compete. If there's rail in Owerri I can build a plant of any sort in Owerri and transport costs disappear because I can move bulk products to sea for cheap.

If I create bulk products and have to drive, on Nigerias roads, automatically I cannot make anything past a certain size or produce past a certain volume.

Importing things also becomes expensive. These are the real ingredients of the modern world. You don't have them, don't know. you need them, and are suffering from a lack of them, but at the same time complaining about what ia created from a lack of their existence.

Okigwe has no major commerce moving through it. Orlu as well. Owerri does and that is why it is what it is. You ppl think everything is a government project when 99% of cities are the byproduct of common business sense.

I want to build a factory that sells things overseas. The factory must have access to sea and rail. Unless I want to sell 10 cars a month

It's ok because it's private but when government does it, I wonder.

All over the world, vehicle manufacturers transport their manufacturered vehicles by road to nearest ship or rail yard. Vehicles transport is one of the most bulky transportation business.
You don't need IMSG to build you rail lines from Owerri to wherever before you can start your vehicles manufacturing, or other industries in Owerri.
FYI, in Imo state, Okigwe is the city that's most connected by rail and important highway, thus moves more commerce than Owerri. Owerri is merely a civil service city but ballooned through the foul play of locating nearly every government institution in Owerri area.

Anyhow, for rail lines and yard in Owerri, you can as well ask the federal government to uproot the rail lines that passed near Okigwe, place the rail to connect Owerri to Umuahia or Aba rail lines, since Owerri is the only place that exists in your mindset for Imo state.

Small city Tallahassee is the capital city of Florida in the US. Florida has other giant cities. But only a most poorly educated person can suggest that Florida State governor invest the funds of the state of Florida into building all sorts of infrastructures in Tallahassee, but abandon the other towns and cities in Florida state to rot - all because Tallahassee is capital of state of Florida, all because he wants Tallahassee to compete with other giant city state capitals in the US; this is like what has been going on in Imo state since 2007 regarding Owerri versus Okigwe and Orlu. Successive governors of Imo state demolish and rebuild in Owerri, often building unwanted structures in Owerri, but common urban roads and drainages are lacking in Orlu and other urban towns in Imo state.

My friend how many vehicles are in the picture you posted? Lets say you want to establish a plant that builds vehicles. Where do you do it?

1. A place with access to sea
2. A place with access to sea by way of navigable water
3. A place with access to sea by way of rail

Those are your three options from best to worst.

Of course there's sentiment. Government builds it in their state to 'boost youth employment', man builds it in his village etc. But if you haven't noticed by now, sentiment is not a strong enough motivator for a modern econommy. If you want to compete and survive, you will have to produce at volume and distribute at equal volume.

Right now 99% of Nigerians are driving cars they recieved by way of sea. You can make a car in Nigeria but it is cheaper to get to Lagos from New York than Lagos from Owerri. So when you vehicle arrives, hopefully not damaged by road, hopefully not delayed by road, and in enough quantity to be carried by road at once to the market in Lagos, it is competing with 5000 cars that just came off one boat. If you want to build a 1st class factory, you will have to produce at that volume, and you cannot produce at that volume without rail.

Rail will bring you the materials you need in the volume you need them. Rail will send you products by the thousands all over the world.
So again, if I want to build the a car plant that produces thousands of vehicles a year. The type of volume that would allow one plant to make Owerri a top economy in Nigeria, I will look for a city with access to

1. sea
2. navigable water (non in Nigeria)
3. Rail.

When you understand this, you will then understand why investments go to Lagos (sea, rail) and Ogun (rail) the way they do.

everyone in America understands the government is not what determines which city will be great and which will be small. If Orlu and Okigwe want to grow, they need commerce running through them. Government cannot do that. What percentage of Owerri is a government project?

You think Owerri is what it is because the government moved a school?

Owerri is well suited to accomodated the #1 economy in the east = tourism. Most of the commercial activity in the east is people from else where coming to enjoy themselves and relax and Owerri is their choice because of hotels, not because of Imsu. Stop being sentimental

Stop deceiving yourself always in this thread, I am from imo, but the truth of the matter is that Owerri is a rural area compare to Onitsha. Owerri and Aba are on the same of dearth infrastructure. There's a reason most imo indigenes prefer to live in Onitsha than even Owerri, it is because a lot of factors are considered. Owerri is worse than even Aba today, stop coming here to deceive yourself. Below is the aerial view of Owerri, it shows a town laid back in stone age, a disjointed, unplanned village littered with dirty old houses, rustic brown roofs, dilapidated roads and hugd sanitation challenge. Go to imo thread and advice our incompetent governor
