The federal government has opened its testimony as the prosecution witness in the case involving the leader for the Movement for Defence of the Niger-Delta (MEND), Mr. Henry Okah, with indications emerging that President Goodluck Jonathan is disposed to offering him an olive branch to pacify the volatile oil region.

Okah is currently standing trial in a Johannesburg (South African) court regarding his role in the twin bombing that rocked the October 1st 2010 Independence Day Anniversary celebrations in Abuja where scores of people were killed and wounded.

Leading the FG team that testified on Tuesday was the Niger Delta Minister, Mr. Godsday Orubebe who told the South Gauteng High Court that despite the grievous harm that the bombings caused to families of the victims, dialogue with members of warring factions has proved the best strategy in restoring peace to the oil-rich state.

“Throughout his tenure, Jonathan has always preached about the use of dialogue as a better way of getting to mutual consensus on contentious matters. If the accused is ready for dialogue, we will be very pleased to bring him on board,” Orubebe said.

According to information regarding the proceedings of the court obtained from website of a South African based newspaper, Mail and Guardian, Orubebe told the court that MEND, has two factions led by ex-militant, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo.

Orubebe said the other faction, which he termed as minority is linked to Okah, saying while former militants under Tompolo had taken up amnesty and abandoned an armed rebellion; those under Okah fought on.

A situation that might have warranted the decision of government to seek to extend an olive branch to the embattled militant to forestall a total breakdown of law and order in the region, if Okah’s men are left behind in the programme.

This is the same Okah that has insisted that President Jonathan's agents sponsored the March 15, 2010 and October 1, 2010 bombings in Warri and Abuja respectively for political considerations.

Okah said the purpose of the Warri blast was to create an atmosphere of insecurity in the state so as to remove Uduaghan and replace him with James Orubebe, incidentally the same person who was in South Africa to represent the FG team.

Okah added that the thinking behind the October 2010 bombing was to sway public opinion against the North and some of its leaders so that Jonathan would emerge as the President.

Since those bomb blasts happened, the spate of bomb explosions in Nigeria has been on the increase and this has claimed many lives and planted fear, disunity and rancour in the polity. This is not to talk about countless gun fights and murdering of innocent Nigerians in cold blood. Across the land, there is palpable fear and insecurity.

Is it not curious that the same government wants to dialogue with such an individual? Why not pursue the case to a logical conclusion so that the government can prove to all fear-stricken Nigerians that it is innocent of these damning allegations? Why push for dialogue that may lead to a withdrawal of the case from the court?

I would not have entertained this notion in the past but too much has happened since GEJ became President that means Okah's words must not be treated with levity. Where can we find Chima Orlu and Ben Jessy? I.e the alleged independence day bombers?

Also, when it matters, have we not seen GEJ demonstrating cynical callousness to get his way?

Did he not ignore Gbenga Daniel's hideous act of corruption and legislative gangsterism because, at that very time, the need to make the Ogun Governor his South-West campaign co-ordinator was more important than everything else?

What of Teslim Folarin acquitted of a murder charge miraculously, and within minutes, only to then desperately be flown to Abuja to deliver delegate votes to defeat Atiku?

Dokpesi picked up and questioned in realtion to the bombing only to then be released and absorbed , almost immediately, into GEJ's election campaign team? shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked

Where are the 'palliatives' GEJ deceived Nigerians he would supply by removing fuel subsidy to negate scams any sensible person would know could not have happened without the complicity of Mr.President and Allison-Madueke since it is only the FG and the NNPC that can issue Marketers licence?

I think many are failing to note the real actions of GEJ that confirm he is someone very cynical and coldly calculating.

Abeg, let us go there. Perhaps memories will be 'jogged'. Has anyone seen these men suspected to have carried out the Independence day bombing?

Negotiating with a terrorist is now our government's solution to curbing terrorism.
Yar'adua set this as a precedent which is very wrong.
I am of the opinion dat if he had confronted the militant issue head-on and dealt with them, this boko haram boy would have a rethink b4 taking arms against d government.

Don't be confused, its quit easy he is preparing for 2015. Its all politics!
He needs to mobilize his home ground first!
All loose ends need to be taken care of.
