The Bank of Industry has expressed its readiness to partner PAWA 774 to develop renewable energy in the country. The Head, Access to Renewable Energy Project, BoI, Mr. Segun Adaju, said this during the passing out of the pioneer 100 trainees of the PAWA 774 scheme. PAWA 774 is a private sector-led initiative to deploy 10 megawatts of clean and renewable energy power plants in each of the 774 local government areas of the country. The programme marks the beginning of a Federal Government-endorsed renewable energy plan that will provide about eight gigawatts of clean power to Nigerians over the next five years. Adaju said BoI was seeking ways of developing more environmentally friendly energy options in place of the noisy and hazardous use of generators. He said the United Nations Development Programme had signed a memorandum of understanding with the bank to address the problem under a project known as Access to Renewable Energy. Some of the mandates of the project, according to Adaju, include improving access to reliable and renewable energy service options for micro, small and medium enterprises, and development of capacity of stakeholders to facilitate investment in renewable energy sector. “This is why we are here today to support the development of 100 graduate trainees in renewable energy, which is a novel development in Nigeria,” he said. The training programme, which is mandatory for all PAWA 774 employees, certifies successful participants and gives them an opportunity to contribute meaningfully towards the expansion of clean power generation in the country. The training was conducted by the Renewable Energy Training Institute under the supervision of the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria. The Managing Director, RETI, Prof. Olurinde Lafe, said that the programme marked the beginning of the Federal Government-endorsed renewable energy plan that would provide about eight gigawatts of clean power to Nigerians over the next five years. The private sector-led initiative had already started with its inaugural training workshop for 100 potential recruits.. The programme, according to Lafe, “marks the beginning of a federally-endorsed renewable energy plan that will provide about 8GW of clean power to Nigerians over the next five years.” Lafe, who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Renewable Energy Technology Institute, said his firm was responsible for developing the national renewable energy training curriculum that will be used throughout Nigeria. He said the PAWA 774 training programme, which is mandatory for all the recruits, would certify successful participants and give them an opportunity to contribute meaningfully toward the expansion of clean power generation in Nigeria. He said, “We have had a fantastic four weeks. Each of the trainees has been fully engaged and they are ready to participate in the creation of a new momentum within the Nigerian power sector".
