This example of the use of "learnt" is NOT past participle.
This is why I insist on us learning our own languages and stop this Colo mentality on display here.

"I learnt that" is PAST TENSE

"I have learnt,I had learnt" those are past participles

But I would rather be correcting Ijaw any day

Can we taalk about OUR Yeon languages please grin

you're right... typed with sleepy eyes. I hope I didn't make mistakes in all my posts...

Dr. Wise:
I was enmeshed in a ridiculous argument yesterday as I made use of the word 'stupidest'amongst my circle of friends which I authoritatively knew was correct. They all laughed hysterically at my usage of that word and even swore there isn't any word like that but 'most stupid'.

Nairalanders, please was I wrong?

I think so. The way to use it is by saying more stupid or most stupid. Saying stupidest is almost like saying "gooder" or "goodest" which is wrong. Not all words use "ier" or "est". Some are used with more or most.
eg: intelligent. you can't say He's intelligentier than you. So you say He's more intelligent than you. You can't say She's the intelligentest in her class. You say: She's the most intelligent in her class.

Can you imagine these monkeys worrying about english language that is on it way out it way out in the 21st century?

One would have thought that the zealots that will be at the forefront of the campaigne against the abuse and the inevitable demise of the english language will be the descendants of the slave masters, not the slaves themselves, who the same language was systematically imposed on to decimate their cultural, natural and intellectual instincts that have lived on till this day.

Most of you guys have been so broken to the point that you cant see the dehumanizing effects of accepting imposed language, making it yours, losing yours and to add insult to injury, trying to sound better than the english themselves.

All these kind of mentality explains why africans are backward today, they dont know what is important, what's relevant, their place in nature is not as defined as that of mere ants who undestands their rightful place and have been able to shape their evolutionary traits based on precedences passed on from generation to generations, without being enslaved to some other creature's ways, like blackman is enslaved to oyinbo's.

Free yourselves muderfuckers from mental slavery and formulate a language that is yours.A language that comes from within, that defines your world and imaginations.

dabigwalls: I have often come across people in writing substitute the use of "I'm" with "am". It is becoming a careless error that is gradually creeping into professional writing and it is to say the least appalling that even graduates have no clue. There was a time people would say "it's my lucky" rather than "it's my luck", etc

"I'm" is the abbreviated form of "I am" so when "am" is used alone, it may pass in speech but never ever in an application to a serious organisation or employer. Never write "am hoping that..." -in an email or letter. Rather in speech, it should be "I am hoping..." -and not even the correct abbreviation "I'm".

This may not affect the prices of many things in the market o but a trained and sophisticated HR recruiting unit may perceive such candidates as weak potentials - even if the contrary were true.

I created a thread about this a while back, specifically about how a girl loses sexy-points in my head whenever she sends a message with the dreaded "am" in place of "I'm". Some guy was actually dragging with me that Am is a legal grammatical replacement of am, claiming he uses it in his office as well on official documents... He was quite adamant that he was in the right......I cringed.

Timijo: The word "organisation" is the correct spelling in standard British english. This is b'cos Nigerians use the British english as the official language. If it is spelt like this- organization, it is wrong b'cos that is the American english and we are not using American english as our official language b'cos we were not colonised by the Americans. Other words that should have "S" instead of "Z" are specialise, neutralise, analyse, socialisation, colonise and so on.

This one na over sabi grin

I'm in university and proofread essays at times. Too many times do students get the above three confused. Either they don't know or they don't care to know. I'm convinced the falling standards of the English language isn't subject to Nigerians alone. That certainly doesn't make it alright, however.
solecism...try americans or do chat with them online and see how they handle what u've jst pointed out, then u'll glorify nigerians for fostering english lang with a backup(pidgin, u can correct the spelling...thank u).

Another common error pple make is using 'theirself' instead of 'themselves'.
Saying/writing, "SAVE journey" instead of "SAFE journey".
And not knowing when to use 'lose/loose/loss/lost'

I think English lang. is giving majority of nigerians serious headache & for us to eliminate grammatical error in our speeches or writing, i am going to sponsor a bill in d senate for Nigeria to adopt IBIBIO & EFIK dialect as d official language of nigeria.

Sisi_Kill: Yeah one of my pet peeves is the S mistakes. . .for instance on the front page there is a thread with this title » How Many Nigerians Supports A Nigerian Football Team? «

Nigerian (Singular) - Supports (S is needed)

Nigerians (Plural) - Support (No S is needed)

. . . How's that such a hard concept to grasp?

Use of Concord has always been the problem of most people.

Dont mind the animal. They tend to forget the rationale behind the name, which the creation(invention),not just name. The person that created it,named it.Therefore language evolves with people's ability to reason and craete.

But a people without original language can not reason, neither can they create.A typical Case study, nogeria,They are mentally dead and evolutionarily stalled because they dont understand the language they speak.
