Tanker Drivers Begin 7-day Strike by valhendeshawgm(m): 11:23am On Nov 13, 2012
TANKER drivers Monday began a seven-day warning strike, raising concern over another round of fuel scarcity in the country.

The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said the strike is to protest the alleged killing of one of its members Mohammed Saidu, in Jos, Plateau state, by a soldier.

The union is also kicking against the alleged seizure of two fuel-laden trucks belonging to its members by soldiers in Bori Barracks in Port Harcourt and at Odogbo Barracks, Ojo, in Ibadan, more than one year ago.

Other grievances of the tanker drivers included the Mareva Injunction by Bank PHB against MRS Holdings. The injunction has frozen the accounts of MRS making it impossible for the company to function and to pay the wages of close to 2,500 members of the union in its employment.

It was learnt that most of the depot owners in Lagos such as Capital, Obat and Jone had shut down their operations.

NUPENG President Comrade Achese Igwe said the strike would take its course because the issues raised by the union are not being addressed.
