Should Parents Be Held Responsible For Their Child’s Online Behavior? by Nobody: 3:43pm On Nov 19, 2012
The Internet is a big, dangerous place where kids can get in all kinds of trouble. That’s at least the line fed to us by various groups that advocate parents take a stricter approach in monitoring their children’s Internet usage. It’s a noble sentiment, but can parents be held responsible for their child’s actions online?

It’s an interesting question, and one that the German courts have been trying to tackle since 2007. At that time, a couple’s 13-year-old son had uploaded over 1,000 songs to various file-sharing networks. The record industry demanded that the kid’s parents pay the damages, but the parents refused and took the matter to court.

According to TorrentFreak, the record companies argued in court that the parents could be held responsible for their child’s action because they didn’t fulfill their parental obligations.

The parents took the case to the Court of Appeals, but they found no friends there either. The court once again ruled that the parents didn’t do enough to stop their son’s file-sharing.

After almost five years of fighting, the parents took the case to the Federal Court. The highest court in the land overturned the two previous rulings, and freed the parents from any responsibility. In the ruling, the Federal Court said that the parents had already fulfilled their basic parental obligations by teaching their son right from wrong. It was assumed that part of that would mean telling their child that piracy is wrong. What’s more is that the court also ruled that the parents were not required to monitor their son’s online activities as the plaintiffs argued.

Do you agree with the court’s ruling? Was the court right to absolve the parents of any responsibility?

Do you think parents should be held responsible for their child’s online actions?

I guess it's time for me to create an online parenting robot.

But somehow i feel the parents could have monitored what their child was doing online. They could have restricted him to certain sites. But it's a tough job if you ask me.

I don't think parents can monitor all the activities their children do online.

Even if you add some restriction remember there are many ways to kill a rat.

Just install a good spy ware on the system that can't be seen on add and remove program, from the result you will be able to know how to tackle your children online activities and also what they think on their mind.

@Topic;parents can only train them well and pray for them so they can have peace of mind. But to monitor them, that'll probably just lead to unnecessary high blood pressure.

Excellent Topic! I think 13's too young for the parents not to be held liable for a child's actions.

Bringing up a child in a way that he or she obeys the laws of the land is the responsibility of the parents. The Bible said, parents should bring up a child in the way of the Lord and when he or she grows old they will not depart from it. Piracy is a sin and any christian parents that knows what is doing should be able to tell the children that they should not indulge in practices that will not glorify God. e.g pornographic etc. The young man or lady that posted and said he or she is porn star is quite unfortunate. I want to advise that you desist from it because it will ruin your life and if you dont repent and give your life to the Lord Jesus Christ, you will end up in Hell, but I am praying that God in His infinite mercies will show you His light.

There are many reasons why parents cannot be totally held responsible for their children online behaviours such as:
1. Illiteracy; some parents cannot even identify a computer, not to talk of knowing what their children are doing with it.
2. Affordability; some parents cannot afford to buy a computer, hence, their inability to monitor what their children are doing their.
3. Ignorance, some parents do have access to computer, they can do some simple things with it, but dont know dt it can be used to perpetrate evil, and those who knows prefer to ignore, for reasons best known to them, etc, etc.
That been said, if as parents, we have even perform our duties as expected, we dont need to fear about what our children are doing online, inasmuch, as we have trained them to d right path from their childhood, they will always remember d training given to them and we have to continue praying for them not to pair with bad company that may want to adulterate d sound trainig given to them from their childhood, with that, we will be rest assured that they can not do what is unexpected of them either online or offline.
Train your child the way he shall go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.(reframed).
May God help us all.

Aside the parents' reponsibilty to bring up their children in the right way, each child likewise has the responsiblity of bringing him/herself up the right way too
