The Lagos State Government is set to put an end to indiscriminate parking of vehicles on sidewalks.

Governor Babatunde Fashola on Sunday said there was a need to ensure sanity in people’s attitude to driving and road usage.

He said the Ministry of Physical Planning and other relevant agencies had been instructed to begin aggressive sanitisation of the state roads by removing vehicles causing obstruction to free vehicular movement.

The governor, who was fielding questions from Lagosians during the celebration of his 2,000 days in office said, “I have instructed the Ministry of Physical Planning and other ministries concerned to go out and remove vehicles from sidewalks.

“If you cannot contain your vehicles inside your premises, we will come and take them away.”

The governor also urged traders in the state to desist from trading on the sidewalks, saying it prevents people living with disabilities from having unhindered space to use.

Meanwhile, former Lagos State Commissioner for Public Transportation, Dr. Segun Ogundimu, has asked Fashola to stop pursuing commercial motorcyclists, popularly called okada riders but face real issues in the state.

Ogundimu, at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday, said, “The traffic law as it relates to the okada operators should not make you lose sight of the necessity to protect the travelling public.

“You must do something about real issues in the state rather than pursue okada riders all over the place.”

He said the force with which the restriction of okadas on some routes was being enforced was like “killing an ant with a sledge hammer”.

Ogundimu said during his era as commissioner, the challenges of okada riders were not different from what obtained currently.

He said a very sizeable number of operators were unemployed school leavers, some of whom are graduates, were non-indigenes who had noticed the yawning gap in the state’s supply side of public transportation.

Therefore, the operators, he said, had taken up the gauntlet to tackle the challenge created by the inadequate support for the travelling public.

He said with the restriction and strict enforcement, the increasing tendencies of operators to be hired by negative groups to perpetrate nefarious activities to people of questionable characters were high.

Ogundimu said okada remained the only viable and swift means of affordable public transportation in Lagos today.

Fasola is loosing it,he needs to change its tatics.

Let him face more pressing need of the people, rather than all these nonsense.

Where do you want us to park our cars,on the roof?
Oga Fasola,if you can't rule again, simply resign, don't use all these to cover your incompetence

This is coming too late.
It should have been done as soon as MEND and Boko Haram started using car bombs. Allowing indiscriminate parked cars for a long period makes it easy for terrorist attacks using car bombs!
Anyway better late than never.

Sharap! Fashola is losing nothing! Lagos is gradually shaping up like a true mega-city under his watch and I support this call 101%.

More attention will be paid by greedy developers and shylock landlords to parking space for their residential and commercial developments. If you must park on the street, be ready to pay a hefty fine!

From a security point of view, who benefits from this policy, Fashola, private car owners or car-jackers?

People in the diaspora should advice these ignorant lagosians on the benefits of Fasholas deeds! People often say that these governors see who things are done abroad when they travel and yet can't introduce them in they states.

Here we have a governor trying to upgrade our biggest city to a mega city and people are complaining.

On the issue of more pressing issues, I wonder what it is more pressing in lagos than free flowing traffic and sanity on the roads.

These laws do not catch you unless you are offending.

We all like to travel to the west and marvel at how organized the place is...well it is organized because there are stringent laws that are ENFORCED to ensure compliance.

Law and order is very necessary for growth in other sectors.

Singapore had to impose a lot of seemingly 'draconian' laws at a time. Including a ban on chewing gum in public.

Are you supposed to be parking your car on a pedestrian walkway? Bush men.

Parking your car inside your bedroom is one option. LOL!
Another option is buying just as many cars as your parking space allows!!
Yet another is to find a private, commercial place to park your car and pay daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly!!!

So you see you get am for plenty options.

BTW, is this for all of Lagos state or just for some parts of the urban metropolis
I also think this is better handled by the LGAs & LCDAs

In the early 2000s, there was a proposal to build multi-level parking lots at Marina, Victoria Island and Ikeja. A smart businessman should take advantage of this opportunity to complete the project.

In the 1970s and '80s the Lagos Island Local Government enforced the law against parking on the sidewalk. They also had parking metres at designated places.

The result.

If you check, you'll discover that most of the tall buildings in Central Lagos that were built in the '70s and '80s have parking facilities on the 1st and 2nd floors.

Laxity in enforcing this law in the '90s and 2000s has led to a situation where people erect structures without providing adequate parking facilities.

u berra stfu, which mega-city? Better u don't deceive yourself, a mega city will come into place, when all provision necessary for it are made, not by beating around the bush.

Did he make alternative means of transportation, when he banned okada? He just gave Lastma, and policemen a meal ticket with that ban.
How many houses in Lagos have a parking space? Its due to the incompetence of the relevant authority,so why should I be held responsible for their incompetence.
Ur brain needs examination.

Very good. Nigerians just park on the roads indiscriminately. In front of my house on the mainland, some silly Nigerians parked and have abandoned their cars there for a while now thereby causing discomfort for we occupants. I can't wait to get a towing van and dump the cars at the junk yard.

One reason why I don't like to drive always in Lagos during working hours is because of the difficulty of finding parking space at certain destinations - and the attendant fear of the LASTMA goons towing away one's car. That's why I found Okadas very convenient for movements to certain areas during working hours (e.g. Allen Avenue/Opebi, Alausa CBD, and Lagos Island CBD) where parking space is hard to find. Now, they've banned Okadas, thereby forcing us to use our cars compulsorily, and now they are threatening us with seizure if we park along sidewalks.

This government is clearly bereft of ideas, so it has resorted to knee-jerk and strong-arm oppressive tactics to mask its deficiencies.

Great law!

Most of us don't park indiscriminately on the sidewalks and even brazenly on the road when we find ourselves in other climes

Just only wondering what will happen to those cars. In case of a total loss to government, even my insurance companies won't pay claims on this one. Time to seriously caution our chauffeurs
