Installation Of Solar Power Supply Completed In 6 Airports by nameo: 1:14am On Dec 14, 2012
IN a bid to put an end to the erratic power supply to navigational aids across the country’s airports, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has completed the first phase of the installation of Solar Power units at a cost of N218million.

The completed Solar power installations cover six locations namely; Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, Bida and Enugu.

This development came to light at the weekend during the official handing over of the completed power project by the contractor- Stormberg Power Limited, whose Chairman, Otunba Tunde Morakinyo, met with the Managing Director of NAMA, Mazi Nnamdi Udoh, at the headquarters of the agency, to hand over and intimate the NAMA boss with the completion of the project.

Speaking on the development, Udoh declared: “This is another milestone in saving money and diversifying our power source to solar. It is a project that has been ongoing and is now fully completed

and we are now using it. It is saving us the huge amount we used to spend on diesel to power generators and the down-time we used to experience due to power failure.

“So, it is a thing of joy. We will continue to explore how we are going to deploy it in other areas apart from its current usage for navigational aids which is the pilot scheme in six airports/locations.”
“The solar power is solely for navigation/landing aids only for now in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Bida and Enugu where we have major issues as regards constant power supply to the runways/air field lighting’’.

Power supply to the airfield and runways in the aforementioned airports, Mazi Udoh pointed out used to be very erratic while NAMA used to keep them alight by running generators on 24-hour basis.

On the cost of the project which he said was N218million and that it does not cover only the installation of the Solar Power units in the six locations, but also included the training of NAMA staff in the electrical/electronics department to take charge of operations of the project.

He added that this was the first phase and assured that the next phase, which would cover other airports, was expected to begin before the end January, 2013.

The Chairman of Slomberg Power Limited, Otunba Morakinyo, said his company was delighted to be associated with the project and assure that the solar units supplied and installed for NAMA were of high quality which would tremendously ensure uninterrupted power supply to navigational aids and thereby enhance safety while saving the agency millions of naira spent monthly to purchase fuel for generators across all the airports.

This is Commendable cos for the longest time there has been a HUGE problem of alternative/Secondary Power supply to Airports in Nigeria, which has not only been disgraceful but has been a threat to safe navigation in our airspace. Its been one of the many reasons ICAO have refused to certify any Nigerian airport, and something previous governments have promised to do without fulfilling it.

Honestly, am now becoming impressed by this Oduah woman. She is the one doing the remodelig of airports too. The TRACON project have been completed finally in the last 2 years, thereby giving radar converge to all aircrafts in the space of Nigeria. Similarly, the new VHF Communication system which ensures effective communication coverage in every airspace has also been completed . NAMA deserves some commendation.

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/solving-erratic-power-supply-at-nigerian-airports/125547/

But much more still need to be done o by NAMA and FG. For instance, most airports are still not fenced round such that we still hear of cows walking into the runways of some airports. What a DISGRACE! We also do not have any of our Domestic airport's runway lighted at night such that flights must stop by 6.00pm- in the 21st century!

Kudos on these ones though, we expect more

Oh, well well @OP. Just saw this now straight from the mills:

Five years after the unveiling of the rehabilitated domestic runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the Federal Government will, in a matter of days, install mobile airfield lighting so that aircraft can land there in the night.

Domestic carriers have clamoured for the installation of airfield lighting on this runway, known as Runway 18L, because during the evening and in the night when the runway is not allowed to operate, the airlines lose money on wear and tear of their aircraft and on fuel burnt while the aircraft taxi from the international runway to the domestic terminal (MMA2) or the General Aviation Terminal (GAT).

THISDAY learnt that it is the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) which is now in charge of providing airfield lighting at the nation’s airports that facilitated the project and that the mobile airfield lighting would be an interim measure until a permanent one would be installed next year.

It is not only the Lagos airport that will benefit from this runway lighting as NAMA has planned to install the facility at other busy airports to ease air services and improve safety, especially at Yuletide.

In addition, NAMA has also installed digitalised airfield lighting at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja as back-up in case there is disruption of the fixed lighting which was installed recently at the airport.

A NAMA source told THISDAY: “We are deploying emergency airfield lighting to the Runway 18L and other airports as back up to the conventional ones while we still continue to work on installing permanent airfield lighting at the airports that do not have them now.
“Factory acceptance tests have been conducted in Dorset, the United Kingdom and we are installing them any time from now. We expect the shipment of the equipment and immediately they arrive we start installation,” the source said.

Nigerian domestic carriers are said to lose over N1.5 billion annually to lack of runway lighting, which also compromises safety standards of the airports.

The former Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Akin George, explained to THISDAY in a recent interview that lack of runway lighting in Lagos alone costs the airline N60 million a year and lack of night operations at the other airports in the country also cost the airline $35 million (about N5.454 billion).

George said: “Airport infrastructure needs to be overhauled; lack of runway lights in Lagos alone cost Aero N60 million a year, lack of night operations at the airports is a loss of $35 million and lack of lighting of taxiways means a drastic reduction is safety of passengers. Failure of runway lights in Lagos, Abuja, Enugu and Calabar has cost Aero an additional N40 million in 2012 alone.”

Also the Chairman of IRS Airlines, Alhaji Isyaku Rabiu, once commented on the effect of not installing airfield lighting on the domestic runway of Lagos airport.

He said there were many problems of infrastructure at the airports, remarking that in the last five years, domestic carriers could not land after 7:00 pm at the domestic airport runway 18L in Lagos.

“We have to land at the international airport. That, you may think is not much but it is a lot of money that we waste in doing that. It cost money on your wear and tear, on tyres, on your brakes, on your airplanes and on your engines and fuel burnt is excessive.

“Sometimes, you get held up at the threshold because there are so many airplanes coming and it is practically almost being done manually. And it takes time waiting there burning fuel and wasting a lot of time. For the airline and for the passengers, it is a negative thing.”

Very good development in the aviation sector.
If JEG can fix the aviation, energy, agriculture and education sectors of our economy then he is surely going to get 70% of votes in 2015.

@MOD, thanks for bringing this @OP's thread to the frontpage finally.

The important point I think should be here is that most of the projects going on in main sectors of the economy/national life (rails, power, inland waterways, dams, roads etc) normally take time before completion cos of the 'natural' lag time; and that it is very unfair for some peeps (either HATERS, politicians, or just a cautious Nigerian who understandably is eager to see changes as quickly as possible) to take advantage of this LAG period and bad-mouth GEJ who is doing real work (as far as I know) to clear some of the massive MESS he inherited.

Some persons on this very forum just some few weeks ago were cursing both GEJ and the Aviation minister to high heavens and trying to belittle the Remodeled airports already completed cos according to them the airports didnt have Alternative power supply, the runways were not lighted at night, and the airports were not fenced. When some of us here tried informing them that these oda tins (which previous govts failed to do by the way) were on going, they including us in the curse-game. This was just so few weeks ago....

I urge people (if you are the fair type that is) to at least familiarize yourself AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE with the projects that are on-going (and believe me they are MANY and are in very important aspects of national life), and then after that you may criticize if so wish, hopefully BY PUTTING THE GOVT OFFICIALS AND THE CONTRACTORS ON THE TOES IN ORDER THAT THE PROJECTS BE COMPLETED. The camera-phone in your hands can be a powerful tool to hold Govt to account, but you have to know what to criticize 1st before you would be able to criticize fairly and to your own INTEREST- and i hope its the INTEREST of Nigeria.

Once again, kudos Aviation Min and NAMA; hope you do more esp the fencing of airports and making sure that Nigeria airlines are ran more profitably and professionally.
