http://saharareporters.com/news-page/azazi-yakowa-tragedy-crashed-navy-helicopter-had-%E2%80%98engine-failure%E2%80%99-after-10-trips

By SaharaReporters, New York
The Nigeria navy executive Agusta 109E helicopter, which crashed yesterday killing Kaduna State Governor Patrick Yakowa, former NSA Andrew Owoye Azazi and four others, had engine failure, naval sources have said.

SaharaReporters learned that the pilot of the helicopter communicated with the control tower in Port Harcourt to report the problem before it crashed to the ground and caught fire. The chopper belonged to the Nigeria navy, but it had been placed at the exclusive service of the president in the Niger Delta region.

Y is sahara reporters desperate to have us believe that the helicopter crashed to the ground before it caught fire when all other news sources had it that the helicopter bursted into flame before crashing?

Why are they silent on those with motives and those who can obviously benefits from these dead.

why are they not considering 2015 as part of these equations. could they be soooo dumb?

Nigerians and inferiority complex. How come they waited this long until the helicopter had crashed before they released a report that the Navy helicopter had engine problems after 10 different flight?! No wonder Nigerians are always last in everything we do. Last to arrive an event (african time), last in sporting competitions, last in meetings/conference (politicians). Last to renew drivers license and most importantly last to write a report for maintenance of aircraft. Naija i hail thee!!

passion007: You guys are funny. Every mishap Nigeria experiences has a way of alluding to Jona, otherwise you won't satiate your hankering for a conspiracy theory. Jona should buy newer aircraft, Jona should maintain them, Jona should convey VIPs wherever there is an occassion in Nigeria (o na-anya taxi?), now Sahara mentions he has ordered 2 new aircraft in the hope he will be condemned. How come a highranking security official did not see the danger in boarding an aircraft that had made 10 trips in one day? How come a Governor depends on the largesse of the President to attend a funeral? Nairalanders as usual barking up the wrong tree, and making trouble for the wrong person.

So you cannot see an abuse of office here? When did navy Helicopter become a personal property of the Presidency?

The Presidency have over 7 planes/Jet on his presidential fleets which Nigerians have been shouting against. As if that was not enough, the presidency Hijacked Navy Helicopter for what has been rightly called Kabukabu just to satisfy his aide/friend Oronto Douglas. The presidency as we are getting to know also deployed the same navy to serve as same Kabukabu when his Brother died.

Is this not an impeachable offence? Can Obama or any European leader hijack the country's armed forces equipment for personal (or even state function) except in an even of war or national disaster?

Nigerian leaders have always been inept; but GEJ is representing the deepest of the dept. He is a fool and will always remain so for me.

When the South (mind you I am Igbo) were lying from both sides of our mouth about Zoning; I told people that another Ironsi is coming to Power in GEJ. Just follow the trend and you see another 1966 in the making. It is unfortunate we refuse to learn from history in our nation.

Sorry Nigerians. Until we revert back to our senses; we will continue to perish.

Ten trips! We have to know the maximum limit the chopper should fly before making assumptions.
What's the total trip covered? A brand new car can cover the same distance without breaking down.
They need to investigate the cause of failure.

Too early for conspiracy theories.

By 'commercial flight', I assume you mean airplane. That cannot land on a soccer field like choppers do.

How does the burial of Oronto Doughlas's father affect Nigerians? What warrants the Nigerian government helicopter to be used for the funeral shuttles?

If there is foul play it must be from Jonathan himself. Perhaps Azazi has more sensitive information to reveal! Who gave permission for the helicopter to be used for funeral shuttle? Obvious abuse of authority as this funeral is a private affair that nigerans did not vote to sponsor.

Now this is a better explanation. Using a chopper for kabu-kabu, to the extent of 10 trips to and fro. Choppers arent designed for long distant journeys, ferrying it from ph to nembe for 10 round trips is almost same as ferrying it from ph to lag.
RIP to the dead.

A failed engine/engines in a chopper does not suffice to cause a crash. It is designed to remain in flight through auto rotation which every helicopter pilot is taught. The power turbine is disengaged from the main rotor gear box by the free wheeling unit and the rotor blades continue turning due to the upward flow of air through the rotor enabling the helicopter to stay airborne and landed safely as soon as possible.
There is more to this story than meets the eye obviously.

Such a sad country we live in whr in the face of tragedy, people on nairaland have turned to ethnic mud slinging to find succour North vs South a pity. Sahara reporters from the confines of their comfortable quarters in new york have been cooking up dangerous sentiments and many false gists to stir mass hatred for Jonathans administration hoping for it to fail, we all knw these online blogs are sponsored to spread rumors true or falsely but this tragedy is not the time to blame north or south. Nobody here on NL was at Okoroba to prove the helicopter burst into flames before crashing. Some people here are saying kabu kabu, did you guys really expect a sitting state governor to board a public speed boat at swali waterside ? Pls let's be realistic here and think logically. Sahara reporters is causing more harm than good to the Nigerian psyche.

We are saying the same thing bro, but you are still accusing the wrong person. We should find out the naval f..ool who authorised that the aircaft be used to convey people to a funeral, and 'impeach' him. This is not a one-person Government. For all we know,GEJ may or may not have hijacked the Naval aircraft, the other psycophant in the Navy may have volunteered the aircraft in the hope of getting a political favor.
Mind you, i am also a critique of GEJ, but sometimes we just over-do it,blaming him for our collective misery while the real offenders go free.

At the time of the crash, the helicopter had reportedly done 10 shuttle trips between Port Harcourt and the burial place of Mr. Douglas's father in Okoroba. Landing and taking off from the soccer field of a decrepit local school in the town.

The flight was reportedly the last one, but the engine failed some ten minutes after takeoff, leading to the fatal crash.

MAYBE YOU GUY THINK WE ARE ALL ABOKIS OR WHAT ?

HOW CAN THE ENGINE FAILED 10MINUTES AFTER TAKE OFF AND THE HELICOPTER IS STILL IN NEMBE COMMUNITY IN BAYELSA ?

FUNNY PEOPLE

GO GET YOUR CLUE RIGHT

This is exactly what I have been saying since Saturday at the risk of being tagged insensitive. The Presidency owes the Navy an unreserved apology for the deaths of those airmen. As for the politicians on board they have just committed suicide on the altar of our sordid culture of profilgacy and political correctness. Burial indeed. The Navy should charge them oh.

If that aircraft had gone down battling militants or securing our territorial integrity then those pilots will be heros. Now where is the honour in this incident. Burial indeed.

No. Corruption issues. Just did deeper, trace the history of that craft from purchase to date and I can bet my right arm that it was an accident waiting to happen. It always is. Always engine failure.

Engine failure as used here is a generic term that could represent anything from loss of power to the complete disintegration of the power train. If for instance the bearings of any of the two rotors failed at high foward speed, I tell you nothing will save that aircraft. Auto-rotation is possible with only the least of engine failures.

The pilot may not have done the above, might have done it and not gotten a positive results and a gazillion other things could have happened. What we need is proper investigation not speculation. You should know better than to speculate as a pilot if you are one.

Head of any body is allowed to give his/her permission as to the use of the organisations property. Surely a prior permission was given before the helicopter could be used for such engagement. Again, is that a problem?

Really!!! You dont see the problem in that?!

They spend billions of my Tax naira buying multiple cars (both bulletproofed and otherwise) for themselves, use the Nigerian Police as their personal security and yet that isnt enough... NOW its the Nigerian Navys helicopters that are being used for Funeral taxi abi?!

What next?!

* The Nigerian Army Tanks would be used as security vehicles at politicians birthday parties?!

* The Nigerian Navy Submarines would be used to ferry people back and forth for a Politicians Child Dedication?!

* The Nigerian Airforces MIGs will be used to pursue birds from the skies around OTA farm?!

* Or use the Nigerian Army C-120 Hercules aircrafts to transport minerals from Abuja to Bayelsa for the funeral?!

Like are you kidding me?!

You dont see a Problem with using the NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES equipments for personal events?!

WELL!! I'm not surprised... Its not like they have any reasonable thing they do with it sef..

Please tell the ARMY to bring out their APC's (Armoured personnel Carriers) and use them for public transport.. God Knows that this ember month wey Armed Robbers full road, people will gladly enter bulletproof tanks to go to their vilages..

10 trips for a chopper of dat class is easy street. i dont think 10 trips will cause an engine failure. but why for heaven's sake should office holders, and a lot of them too leave their offices for this burial when they just came back from one 2 weeks ago? i have never even heard about this aide. this is just pure butt licking.
