We Have Restored The Middle Class Through A Regeneration Of The Surulere Environment - Fashola

Feb 18, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Friday handed over the Gbaja Shopping Mall, the upgraded Adeniran Ogunsanya Street and Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Mall, declaring that the three major projects, along with several infrastructure renewal work, in Surulere are important signposts to the administration's restoration of the middle class through its regeneration of the environment.

Governor Fashola who spoke respectively at the handing over of Gbaja Shopping Mall in Surulere, upgraded Adeniran Ogunsanya Street and the Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Mall said the gathering of people at the events reminds everyone of the middle class which was threatened by bad leadership over the nation.

The Governor said the administration started with the reconstruction of the old Adeniran Ogunsanya shopping centre, which has turned into a modern day first class mall in the neighborhood that is now saving people the cost and stress of driving to Ikoyi and Victoria Island.

"The expanded Adeniran Ogunsanya Street that we gather to handover today is the true dividend of democracy and continuity. Surulere, the neighbourhood where this road is sited is called "New Lagos". This is where I was born, raised and educated" he added.

He explained that road and building infrastructure at "New Lagos" came to being in the 1950s when it was apparent that Lagos Island was getting congested and overstretched and there was need to relocate people to a more auspicious area.

He explained that the construction of the Eko Bridge in the 1960s also contributed to the movement and relocation of affected people from Lagos Island to the "New Lagos".

Governor Fashola reiterated that many years of population growth that was not complemented by infrastructure growth led first to emigration of middle class residents from the area and later businesses as the businesses that remained thrived in excruciating conditions while residents endured flooding and chaotic traffic.

Governor Fashola noted that since the regeneration started from Funsho Williams to Eric Moore Road, to Orile and Lagos Badagry Expressway life is increasingly getting better while Akerele, Ogunlana Drive, Adelabu street and Bode Thomas Street are making steady progress.

The Governor said it is the investment which the State Governemnt has made in the Adeniran Ogunsanya road hat has brought back the Adeniran Ogunsanya shopping mall.

He recalled that when the shopping mall project had some delays initially because of the fears of the original owners of the land on which the property was sited, he held a meeting with them where he assured them that their interest would be fully taken into consideration when the project is completed.

He said work is progressing at the new Tejuosho market where a total of 8000 shops in Tejuosho would be available for the public just as another 2000 stalls would be available to the members of the public from the new Oyingbo market.

Governor Fashola promised the present administration will replicate the shopping malls in all parts of Lagos, promising that as long as the Action Congress of Nigeria remains in power in Lagos State, the people have seen nothing yet.

He said as another election approaches, the people of Lagos should not allow themselves to be deceived into believing that the party at the centre which has mismanaged the lives of the people for the past 12 years should be handed another four years to continue the mismanagement.

Governor Fashola said it is very ironic that a party which controls the government at the federal level has found it very difficult to rehabilitate the road that leads to the busiest port in Nigeria and the same party is hallucinating about having a vision for the country.

He said in the last 12 years, a major broken promise that Nigerians have been fed with is that of provision of steady electricity, charging residents of Lagos to ask candidates of the party at the centre who approach them for votes to name the last road that was built in Lagos by the party.

Governor Fashola reminded all eligible voters that all the levels of elections are very vital starting from the Presidential where they must ensure that they vote massively for Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Governorship which must be cast for Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) and the various candidates of the party in the senatorial, House of Representatives and State Assembly elections.

In his welcome address at the handing over of Adeniran Ogunsanya Street and Shopping mall, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works, Engineer Ganiyu Johnson said the road was part of the single carriageway and now upgraded to dual carriageway with all the features such as walkway, streetlights, service ducts.

Engineer Johnson added that the road forms part of the inner ring roads of Akerele, Ogunlana Drive, Adelabu, Babs Animashaun and Bode Thomas Streets and is expected to compliment Funsho Williams Avenue, Eric Moore Road and the Lagos Badagry Expressway and enhance commerce and economic growth in the Surulere area.

In his brief at the event, the Managing Director of Lagos Building and Investment Corporation, Mr Biodun Oki said the Adeniran Ogunsanya Shopping Complex which was built in 1975 for many years served its purpose but because it remained a government facility, it was difficult to charge commercial rate and this naturally affected its maintenance status.

He said by the turn of the century, it became apparent that the facility needed a total overhaul which was why by May 1999, the LSDPC started a long dialogue with the tenants association such that an understanding was reached to the effect that the facility indeed needed an overhaul.

In their solidarity messages at the event, the House of Representatives member representing Surulere 1, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, the Senatorial candidate for the Lagos Central Senatorial District in the 2011 elections, Chief Mrs Oluremi Tinubu as well as the House of Representatives candidate for Surulere 2 ,Hon Aliu Babs Kazeem all commended the foresight of the Babatunde Fashola (SAN) led administration in restoring the middle class which hitherto was on the verge of being wiped out.

They said the projects being handed over are just tip of the iceberg of what the people of Lagos should expect from an Action Congress of Nigeria led government at all levels, asking them to continue to vote massively for the party in the forthcoming general elections.

The events were attended by Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan, members of the State Executive Council, candidates of the Action Congress of Nigeria to various legislative posts in the 2011 elections, market men and women, party leaders and stalwarts as well as appreciative members of the public who trooped out to welcome the Governor who was brought up in Surulere where he spent most of his teenage years.

Yes, and @Op. Before you say "Lagos collects 30billion blah, blah, remember the population its to service. Also b4 u say Alimosho and co are underdeveloped, remember that Lagos is fully developed and occupied, not towns and villages seperated by bush lined highways so it takes up more time and you have a lot more work to do. You can't solve all the problems in Lagos in 8yrs. Not even Superman can. And as for those "Draconian laws", sorry but if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the Kitchen.

Fashola Hands Over 10th Mini-Water Works In Ojokoro
• Says ACN is a party that keeps promises

Feb 21, 2011 - Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Monday commissioned the Ojokoro Mini-Water Works in Ojokoro Local Council Development Area saying his administration has, once again kept its promise to the people as a product of the Action Congress of Nigeria, a Party that makes promises and keeps them.

Addressing a large crowd of residents of the area consisting of traditional rulers, members of Community Development Associations, party leaders and government officials, among others, Governor Fashola itemized some of the promises kept to include, finding permanent solution to the power problem in Iju and Adiyan Water Works and short term solution to the nagging problem of water supply in the State.

The Governor recalled that his administration discovered at inception that the Adiyan and Iju Water Works were producing below capacity because of inadequate electricity supply and needed upgrading.

"To the Glory of God, we have commissioned, for almost one and a half years now, a 12 mega watts Independent Power Project for Iju and Adiyan and they are the only water works in the whole of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that have an Independent dedicated power supply facility which has improved the power supply capacity at the Iju and Adiyan Waterworks", the Governor said.

"We embarked on 15 mini-water works, each with a capacity for two million gallons a day and a reticulation of a radius of five kilometres to service a minimum of 500 houses in each of the communities where they are located. To the Glory of God, today we have kept our promise; this is the 10th of the water projects, two more have been completed and will soon be handed over while three are in different advanced stages of construction and development", the Governor said.

According to Governor Fashola, "We are a Party that has formed a government that keeps promises to its people because democracy is about the government of the people, elected by the people and working for the people. We have kept our promise to you and we are proud to approach you again the electorates, to ask you to renew the mandate".

"Our opponents are pretenders; It has just been reported that at the Federal level controlled by the party that is developing poverty, they have 7, 500 abandoned projects littered across the country. They conceived the projects, they had to implement the projects, they assessed themselves and gave themselves that result", the Governor said.

He recalled that another report by the House of Representatives also indicted the Federal Government for failure to implement the Budget which the House passed for them every year adding that the Lagos State Government has consistently implemented its yearly budget up to 80 percent since 2007.

"The Lagos State Government, under the Action Congress of Nigeria, delivered 70 percent budget performance in 2008, we delivered 73 percent performance in 2009 and we delivered 80 percent performance in 2010. The PDP led Federal Government has delivered 30 percent budget performance. That is why you do not have electricity, that is why security does not work and that is why we cannot manufacture our own fuel", the Governor said pointing out that giving such a party another opportunity to be at the helm of affairs would be a huge mistake.

Governor Fashola expressed dismay that in the last 12 years, a total of $500 billion proceeds from the crude oil sales has been spent by the Federal Government to ensure steady power supply adding, "While a country like Dubai which relies on oil has become a tourist and inventors destination, Nigeria, with its vast deposit of oil, cocoa and men, has not made any improvement because of the caliber of PDP leaders at the helm".

Urging the electorates in the country to come together and vote out the ruling party, Governor Fashola declared, "With your six million votes in Lagos , 15 million votes in the South West and 66 million votes across the Federal Republic of Nigeria, every Nigerian must wake up this time to vote PDP out of our lives".

"PDP is the virus that is disturbing our electricity, PDP is the virus that is disturbing our security, PDP is the virus that is disturbing our healthcare, our education, our industrial development and if you have virus, you flush it out with very good medicine. Your ballot paper and your Voter's Card are the strong medicine that will flush the virus of PDP out of your lives. Use it wisely", Governor Fashola advised.

"Our Party and our Government remain ready to implement life-changing policies; policies that put bread and butter on your table; policies that give your children a brighter, rewarding future; policies like efficient water supply that reduces diseases to your children; policies that keep you away from drought and famine. This is what our party represents", Governor Fashola said adding that this is why the ACN has led the campaigns that the coming elections must be about ideas; that is why we are the first party to publicly launch and hold a colloquium on the agenda of our candidates and the manifesto of our party", the Governor said.

Earlier in their remarks, Chairman of Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, Mr. Demola Doherty and his Ojokoro Local Council Development Area counterpart, Hon. Benjamin Olabinjo, thanked Governor Fashola for fulfilling his promise to the Local Council and to the people of Lagos expressing confidence that given another chance the administration would achieve the total transformation of Lagos into a model mega-city.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the State's Water Corporation, Engineer Sayo Holloway, said the Mini waterworks being handed over was one of the 15 constructed by the present administration as a short term measure to boost water supply in the State.

According to the managing Director, with the handing over of the project, a five kilometre reticulation has also been completed to provide water to about 500 houses.

Others, who spoke at the occasion, including the ACN House of Representatives candidate for the area, Otunba Michael Abayomi Ogunlusi, and the CEO Divine Gate Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Tawa Williams, the project contractors, commended the Governor for the tremendous achievements his administration has recorded in the State in the last four years.

In their goodwill messages, the members of the State House of Assembly representing Ifako/Ijaiye 1 and 2, Hon. Dayo Fafunmi and Hon. Ipoola Omisore, commended Governor Fashola for completing the project and promised the people are ready to vote en masse for him and the CAN during the coming elections.

Also present at the occasion were members of the State Executive Council, Traditional Rulers, including the Oba of Ojokoro, Oba Oluwalambe Taiwo, party leaders and residents of the area who trooped out to welcome the Governor.

Just the simple act of putting sign posts showing the names of all the streets in Lagos is something a lot of states neglect to do....in this 21st century but that simple act by Fashola went a long way. Makes a lot more sense than parking your car to start asking for locations.
