Rampaging Fulani herdsmen slaughter farmer Our Reporter December 23, 2012 24 Comments » By Moshood Adebayo, Abeokuta Nomadic Fulani herdsmen invaded the border town of Oja-Odan in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday, killed a farmer and injured dozens of others. The daring herdsmen allegedly slaughtered one Agbaose Sewotan after invading his farmlands and subsequent destruction of his food and cash crops. An elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Oluwole Sewontan, said the incident occurred in the evening of Friday. His words:‘’This is not the first time that our natives were slaughtered like cows on our own soil with impunity. My dear brother was killed simply because he protested the invasion of his farmland by the herdsmen.” He added:Not less than forty people including males and females were killed over the years and our law enforcement agencies have not been able to bring the culprits to book. According to him, the list of those who had been sent to their untimely graves include Akinola Tunde from Agbon-Ojodu, Phillip Akanan from Owode-Ketu as well as Amosu Olofinjin. The attack came barely one month after a socio-cultural group, Ketu Advancement Front, alerted the state government of the perennial crisis which it said normally happens during the dry season within Ketu communities. The leader of the group, Mr. Lasisi Adewole, said the Ketu communities, which comprise 30 villages had often come under severe attacks by the Fulani herdsmen operating between the boarders of Nigeria and Benin Republic. He claimed that efforts so far made to ensure that the Nigeria Police, State security Service (SSS) and the state government put in place adequate security measures in the area had been fruitless. Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Yewa North Local government, Hon Tajudeen Alani, assured that the government would look into the matter with a view to preventing future occurrence. His words: “Ogun State government is worried with the development, and I can assure you that we are going to find lasting solutions to the killings”. He further disclosed that the state government had already set up a committee comprising Ketu people, Fulani herdsmen and government officials to address the problem. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/rampaging-fulani-herdsmen-slaughter-farmer/ |

MegaMan2020: Fulani people are not human. Such blanket generalization is wrong. I thought you should worry about what the governor of ogun is doing to protect its people. |

This is another form of incompetency on the part of Amosun Led Govt. In a state where lives of the citizenry are paramount, investigations would have been concluded & urgent steps taken. The LG Chairman was just saying rubbish '(setting up a committee that would hear the story from both sides, then another committee to decide on what to do after hearing the story & then another committee to help Amosun decide on which action to do) However, this calls for collective response from pple of southern Nigeria. If urgent steps are not taken now, it will spread to S/South & S/East because some northerners actually promised to make Nigeria Ungovernable because GEJ was elected as President having bombed mostly christians/southerners in the north (ibos inclussive) & no reprisal attacks. Sotherners must act fast now!!! |
