taharqa: @OP, piece of advice: if you do not want yr azzz beaten so thoroughly u wud wish u weren't seeing 'those' beautiful stars Or u do not want a bullet lodged at d back of yr neck, THEN STEER CLEAR OF ALL ROUTES THE PRESIDENT WUD BE TAKEN TODAY. I hear from a very reliable 'source' that his Security details tk his safety very seriously, and that they wud rather gladly 'apologize' to you than to d nation (if u know what i mean). They DONT miss, and am mighty glad bout that... Merry xmas

Re: President Jonathan To Visit Lagos Today (24/12/12) by naptu2: 9:58am On Dec 24, 2012
The cause of this problem is usually the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, the Lagos State Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations (usually the main cause) or the Chief Security Officer to the President. These are the individuals who plan the road closures and route lining (especially compol and dcompol ops). The underlying reason is simply attitude/orientation and misplaced priorities.

There are ways by which the president can be protected, while allowing at the same time ensuring that citizens are not unduly inconvenienced, but no compol wants the president to die in his state, so they ignore the disruption that they are causing to the lives of citizens and decide that all that matters is protecting the president at all cost.

Alternatives:

1) Helicopter: I've seen Shagari, Buhari, Obasanjo and even Goodluck Jonathan, use the helicopter to fly from MMA to Dodan Barracks. There are several lawns at Dodan Barracks and a huge parade ground where he can land. Even if he's going to State House Marina, he can land at Onikan Stadium and make the short journey to state house by car.

2) Proper traffic management: Even if they have to shut down some roads, Lagos was built in such a way that there are always alternatives (witness the recent closure of third mainland bridge). If people are informed on time, they can easily take the alternatives. I wish I could properly explain to you how incompetent the officers on route lining duty are. They need to be retrained. Why would you block the road just beyond an exit When it would make more sense to block the road at the exit so that motorists can use alternative routes.

3) Less intrusion: I've personally seen Ibrahim Babangida (in a green BMW on Awolowo Road. He later confirmed in an interview that he usually drove himself to Ota, without escorts, when he was head of state) and Abdulsalam Abubakar (in a G-Class at Onikan) move about without road closures when they were in power. Murtala famously did the same.

These things are paid for from the people's taxes and it is the people that put them in power. They need to consider the rights of the people when they do these things.

My brother, I fully appreciate what you are saying. Very tragic though. I think the greatest pain I feel for Nigerians is the realisation that extreme poverty, ethnic disunity and a tortuous history ensures most of them are stuck in a twilight zone. They will ,because of an all-consuming negative focus on each other, never come up for air long enough to appreciate what obtains elsewhere and are thus condemned to thinking worthless, corrupt and avaricious leaders like GEJ can perform miracles.

If there is anything I wish for fervently, it is that more Nigerians see what amounts to the norm elsewhere throughout the world to note we are messing around , persevering with abject mediocrity, as the so called biggest black nation on earth and "giant of Africa".
i like your analysis, dont mind those people they keep praying and hoping things will get better instead of them to force their leaders to deliver the goods they perpetually have always longed for over the years

Just that I may have to close very early today.

When I am President, I will fly commercial airline like everyone else, drive on the roads like anyone else. GEJ cannot do the same because He knows He is a ruler and not a leader. A leader enjoys true followership and he is safe amongst His people.

Why put people through serious hardship when He can fly into Lagos at night, move in quietly at wee hours, go about His activities and leave without any jack knowing He even came to Lagos except when they seem Him on tv.

You just reminded me of Abacha. One morning circa 1997 I was going from South West Ikoyi to Yaba. I got to the foot of 3rd Mainland Bridge and there was gridlock. They were expecting Abacha to arrive for the Nigerian War College graduation ceremony. After waiting for a while, they opened the road to traffic.

I later found out from my sources that Abacha arrived Lagos the night before and only the CSO at MMA and a few people knew that he was in town. Governor Marwa, Compol and other dignitaries were waiting for him at MMA when they got a signal that Abacha was already at Dodan Barracks!

Frankly speaking, the disconnect of the people in power to the people guarantees this type of security measures.

I have casually run into Lilyel Imoke and Donald Duke in Cross River state. In both cases, the were on about their business with little more than an orderly at a distance.

The same with Oshiomole...I once drove past a spot where he was conducting an inspection. The crowd was gathered around him and security stood without menace.

Unannounced and unscheduled visits do not require much bravado and security detailing. The major security is that NO ONE KNOWS YOU ARE COMING.

As much as possible, politicians in developed climes try to make the security measures largely unseen and covert...this is to create a sense of normality around the Head of State.

It is all about attitude. Former Lagos state governors used to blast siren in Lagos. Fashola goes about with a maximum if four cars, and without siren.

Of course the position of President is more important and dangerous, but a certain type of president would consider Lagosians in his movement plans and try to be as non obstructive as possible.

Yes, you know like the history of the Israelites shows us, when a people become callous, they get a leader that reflects their estate. Instead of you to be counting your fingers on how many projects He would have completed by 2015 to warrant His come back you are busy playing on sentiment.

Ask IBB, 8 years or 4years is so short that the life after office when you refuse to bring smiles to the faces of people you governed is a terrible thing to imagine. GEJ better wise and change His course.

on my way to office i was stranded at Obalende today, even the garage was deserted, everyone was scrambling for the few available buses,i was asking myself could it that the commercial transporter operators have gone on strike or traveled for Christmas celebration?it didn't take second before my trekking mate told me that President Jonathan is coming to Lagos.
For how long is president going to subject we his boss to these inhumane hardship simply because he wants to ply some roads ?,perhaps he usually travel by air (Helicopter).
I think National Assembly should pass a bill forbidden President and His wife from inconveniencing his fellow Nigerians for reasons which are not even related to National assignment.
Well supported

The 4 years is half done already. Mark my words that GEJ is likely the first one term President since democratic dispensation. The high point of his government was middle of the year when power generation improved, now we are back to generating megawatts in the Newspapers.
