Thousands of teachers across the 20 local government areas of Bauchi state on Friday embarked on a massive demonstration while also conducting special prayers against the chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board [SUBEB] Alhaji Abdullahi Dabo who is also the brother of the state Governor Isa Yuguda.
The protesters who offered two rakaats of prayers at the Bauchi Eid praying ground along Liman Mahmood street Bauchi also stormed the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu carrying placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘Dabo must step down’, ‘Dabo must go’, ‘Dabo is not a true educationist’, etc, chanting slogans against the SUBEB chairman.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP Sunday, the secretary of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Bauchi Local Government chapter Malam Dan’azumi Yakubu disclosed that the demonstration and prayers which were carried out simultaneously in all the 20 local governments of the state was aimed at expressing their rejection and total disapproval over the alleged persecution of teachers by the SUBEB chairman through screening examination.
He said for the past six months, teachers in the state have been having problems with the board especially holders of the National Certificate of Education NCE from the National Teachers Institute’s Special Teachers Upgrading Program STUP and the Distanced Learning Scheme DLS respectively which the board chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Dabo described as unrecognized credentials despite the fact that some of the affected teachers had served for over 16 years with the certificates without anything of such.
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that recently about 12 thousands teachers in the state were screened out of which 5,502 teachers were found to be unqualified bythe board which also recommended their disengagement.
But in a press conference recently over the matter, SUBEB Chairman Alhaji Abdullahi Dabo represented by a permanent commissioner of the board, Alhaji Kassim Ibrahim stressed that the screening exercise was in consideration of the deteriorating state of education in the state, adding that the problem will not be unconnected with the high rate of unqualified teachers in schools across the state.
The chairman revealed that the affected teachers included those who are incompetent, those who do not have the National Certificate of Education NCE and those who were employed with fake or forged documents.
