Fashola gives conditions for re-opening Ladipo Market

LAGOS State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Sunday said the Ladipo Auto Spare Parts Market that was shut last week would not be re-opened until the environmental situation in and around the market improves and the umbrella union of the traders enters into an agreement with the government.

The governor, who spoke during a visit to the market, told members of Ladipo Auto Centre Executive Committee (LACEC) that the reasons for the closure included gross disregard to the environment, erection of illegal structures and improper business dispositions by the traders, adding that all must be thoroughly addressed before the market could be reopened.

The state government’s role in the market, Fashola said, was to encourage the traders understand the importance of a tidy environment, not just for good health but also a crucial factor for a thriving business.

Fashola noted that the rainy season would soon begin in earnest and that government’s intervention was to ensure there would be no casualties as a result of the unacceptable activities the traders had perpetrated in and around the market.

He said the state government would not want to be responsible for casualties of flood as recorded in previous years in Lagos and other states of the country, adding that shutting the market was only a proactive measure at preventing such casualties.

He said the market would remain closed till “the government is satisfied, after which another fresh agreement between government and the union would have been reached.”

He also assured that government was ready to help traders and anybody doing business in any of the markets to prosper but that a shabby condition lsuch as Ladipo Market, before closure, could not encourage customers.

“No business associates will be courageous enough to visit such an environment. It will no longer be business as usual. The old ways cannot continue. Those responsible have seen where their error lies, and I hope they are ready to adjust so that business can continue.”

Fashola urged the traders to co-operate with the Mushin Local Council in cleaning up and ensuring an environmentally sustainable market environment.

In his response, President, Ladipo Auto Centre Executive Committee (LACEC), Iyke Animalu, assured the governor of the union’s and traders’ readiness to comply with the relevant directives towards immediate evacuation and disposal of refuse and removal of whatever might impede free flow of traffic on the roads, so as to have the market reopened.

“The union will do whatever it takes to ensure that it does not disappoint the governor and make sure the market is made a business-friendly environment for traders and customers”, he assured.

Ladipo market is not a refuse disposal site, you clean up your market and either hire private trash collectors to pick up your trash for disposal or call LAWMA.

All they are saying is clean up your shop and don't block the canals.

Clearing of waste is best done by professionals not by the traders. LASG (Fashola) should clean up the dirt and charge the traders for the service and stop drawing unnecessary attention to his own (LASG) failures. If these guys undertake the business of clearing the waste like they did for security, who knows what charges would be leveled against them.

It's not the state's responsibility clean your market and teach you proper hygiene, that's your own responsibility.

What's next? Ask the state to clean your house for you because you pay property tax?

Besides, is there no Environmental Protection/Sanitation Agency in the state (Lagos)? What exactly is their job description?

Wouldn't they have been well served doing their own bit to keep the market and other environment clean. Why do Nigerians panders to tribalism in very basic things? Most of the clowns posting here are busy shouting 'Igbo!, Igbo!!' when common sense suggests that sanitation agency failed woefully to do their job. And what is being exposed here is the failure of Fashola Government to do it's duty. A government that pockets tax and shirks on it responsibility, is as bad could be. Why take out your failure on the citizen? Government have an ingenious way of blaming their failures on the citizen. Fashola's is one example of this type of government.

In closing Ladipo Market, the government has admitted that the agencies responsible for sanitation is lacking in ideas, and or tools to do what is necessary to do their jobs. Close one thousand markets if you like, without putting the necessary tools in place, the dirt will return as soon as the markets are open. Take a look at Oshodi and see what has become of the place. There is something fundamentally wrong in the way LASG government go about closing markets and demolishing buildings. Paucity of ideas is a common denominator in these plethora of Fashola's misadventure, he is losing it by the day!

All you do is keep attacking BRF, claiming hes a thief, hes a racist, hes arrogant, etc. Biko, go back home, and go set up your business in that over-developed village of yours HABA grin grin grin grin grin grin

As an Igbo man, I know I am supposed to side with my people, but I'm sorry... FASHOLA SHOULD LEAVE THAT MARKET CLOSED UNTIL ALL THE CHANGES ARE IN PLACE..

However, he should also remember that these traders have been paying taxes for ages before now. The illegal structures may have been put up by the traders, but was there a taskforce or agency responsible for that market before now?! What about the States Environmental agency that has been collecting levies and all from these traders?! Do you mean that this is the first time they are realizing that all the Markets in Lagos are very filthy?! As much as I support this move by the government, I think the Government needs to also get up and live up to its responsibilities to these people as well..

EKO!! Una no dey slack sha!! Well done!
