This will be the second time GEJ is setting up a special fund for Nollywood in as many years.
During the 2011 elections GEJ "gave" $200 million to Nollywood - he was later accused of deceiving Nollywood.

Today again he announced another N3 billion special fund - another election is coming, I guess.

I would tell you what it is but that is for another day.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has announced the setting up of Project Nollywood programme worth N3 billion, designed to assist the movie industry in the country and enhance its viability.
The president disclosed this at a dinner he held in honour of Nollywood stars to mark the 20 years of the industry at the State House, Marina, Lagos, on Saturday night.
He said the grant was in continuation of the desire of his administration to uplift the industry, which, he observed, could take over from the oil and gas industry in income generation for the country.
The special programme, according to him, would be formally launched in the first week of April.
He assured that his administration would continue to give the needed support to Nollywood, to enable it to take the Nigerian movie industry to greater height of success.
According to him, “I invited the private sector to this dinner, because I believe that they can also support the efforts to further develop the overall value chain of the industry.”
President Jonathan revealed that he had requested the NEXIM Bank and the Bank of Industry to give Nollywood more access loans.
Noting that the industry had already achieved great success in its 20 years of existence, Jonathan urged stakeholders not to rest on their laurels.
He commended Nollywood stars, musicians and sportsmen and women for putting the nation on the global stage by their hard work, describing the groups as the nation’s global brand.
Akwa Ibom State governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, also on the occasion, announced the endowment of the Dr Goodluck Jonathan Prize for the best in the nation’s movie industry.
Akpabio said a total of N50 million would be committed into the award and requested the leadership of the industry to come up with the group that would coordinate it.
“I am the chairman of the newest forum in the arena of politics, the PDP Governors’ Forum. The first set of disciples of the president. We felt we must come together and rally support for the president, especially for his uncommon transformation agenda.
“Nollywood has come of age at 20. When the history of the success of Nollywood is being told, President Jonathan’s name will be mentioned,” he said.
Other dignitaries at the event were the wife of the president, Patience; Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Orji; Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State; Governor Usman Dakingari of Kebbi State and ministers.

Good development.
We need to see Nollywood grow from strenght to strenght.
The industry has capacity to employ many more youths than both banking and telecom combined.

Nollywood is one of the biggest industry in Nigeria, and of course Nigeria biggest cultural export. Any support rendered to them can only be seen as wastage by the 'retardeen choir' and allied bigoted crew because they lack the objectivity and foresight to know better.

Kudo to the FG for this initiative for the second time running.

seanet02: This is called wastage

What do you mean by wastage? If he (President) will release the money to them and it enters good hands for better management/utilization. I see nothing like wastage...Nollywood is very capable of employing the unemployed, generating revenue and so on... WHAT I KNOW IS THAT, WITH VERY GOOD FUNDING, NOLLYWOOD CAN GET TO THE LEVEL OF HOLLYWOOD IF NOT BETTER... Because when there is much funding, there will be great competition amongst actors/actresses, directors, producers, infact all the departments in the movie industry... And from there you will see massive development...

This is surely a step in the right direction. But come to think, which sector of our economy has this president not affected? The vision is quite uncommon and only if our past leaders have this kind of foresight, am sure we would have been better today as a people.

Really? It's better than donating money to BH to acquire more IEDs because you want to mk a political statement.. If our entertainment industry is given the needed funding, support and coordination, the industry could contribute a fortune to our GDP. For now, we have the human resources to mk it work

Well articulated.

The folks usually quick to condemn well targeted government policy are those who wish to see the president fail, to satisfy their preconceived notion. They are the 'retardeen choir' a bunch of hopeless no-gooders

Assert only what you are sure of, esp in public; dats what wise people do.

The $200m Loan facility promisd by GEJ in 2011 and domiciled in d BOI, took sm time b4 taking off, but has since taking off. Business persons from d Entertainment Industry are already drawing from d Facility. The so-calld 'first' Nollywood film that was distributd recently on American Cinemas was supportd by dis Entertainment Fund, sometin that Mr Abu (the Producer) stated expressly. That thread was on d frontpage a little more than a week ago.

That Entertainment Fund is working; dis Nollywood Grant Fund will work. Why? Cos GEJ keeps his promise (YOUWin, SURE-P, et al )

The idea is not bad, however just like SURE-P, funds will be diverted to party faithfuls or will be based on who is on the GEJ's boat for 2015. good ideas from a corrupt mind will only result in corrupt ideals.. MAMSER, OMPADEC, SURE-P.. you get the drift?

Like I said on another post, this is lip service. What Nollywood needs is aggressive clampdown on copyright violators and counterfeiters. There is demand for the product and government does not need to grant them one Naira. The 3 billion would be better expended as a take off grant for a division in EFCC to tackle piracy. In USA it a serious federal crime to pirate intellectual property and the FBI has a dedicated team that enforces the law. If producers know that their intellectual work is protected, they will be willing to invest more money in the business.

The Nollywood community just lost a good opportunity to tell the President the true problem. We should stop throwing money at problems and actually take time to think of how to structure society and the economy for better results.

This is a wrong step and capable of creating corrupt nollywood. This government is already a chop chop govt. in the hands of padi-padi. What Nigerians fail to understand is that- country is best governed with enactments of profound policy that will see an end to corruption.
Nolliwood need the help of president in curbing piracy, if this is taken care of then you can look for a way of making the industry robust via financing it. What you get now is avenue to siphon money as usual. They can’t take out money just like that without attaching it with one frivolous and designed project because Nigeria will shout foul even when our voices mean nothing because we lack Egyptian, Libyan and Syria strengths to chase away this group of looters.
