How do you drive a car when you don't understand the basic function of each part?
In my opinion, this is the sort of question that differentiates a pro from a newbie. You want to get the best of out of Adobe photoshop, do you understand how the tools and components of Adobe photoshop work? How do you seperate an image from its background when you can't even differentiate between the background and the image itself?
The only reason we can manipulate things and manoeuver our way around events is because we understand the basics of those things and events. Its not just about knowing the basics, its about understanding it. When I have a design work, I take into consideration all the tools that will be involved. I understand how those tools need to be used to get the desired result, I understand the system i'm working on(most times my pc which I think I understand perfectly by now), I understand what is expected to be my end result(sometimes its just fun designing blindly as the inspiration comes). Once i put together all these pieces and understand how they work, there's no limit to the 'awesomeness'(I hope that word exists) of my output.
If you are having doubts about any of these pieces, make sure that doubt is cleared before you fully embark on your project and above all, make sure you love what you are doing. There's no greater inspiration than the passion you have for what you do.

I opened this thread thinking the poster was going to do justice to explaining the basics in graphics but after reading through the thread,I can say my expectations were dashed.what's d essence of identifying a problem and not solving it?

The initial title is "Understanding the basics"... it was modified to that. I only used graphics design as an illustration cos thats my field.

What help do u need with graphics?? cos i didn't state it here doesn't mean i can't help u with it eventually.

I actually came here to critique. On arriving, I discovered there was nothing to critique.

No talk on lines, colour, shape and form(the elements) or texture, shade, tone, hue, prominence...(the principles).

Nothing at all...how did this make front page. I feel embarrassed.

ode like you will always say its not easy. by saying that you might discourage some people from doing it. Nigerian mentality, its not always easy. But you will go behind to learn it.

Mr poster, I hv a litle knowledge of graphics design, tot u were going to dwell on it indept, hw cn I get to knw it fully?

It seems some of us entered the thread looking to get guidelines on designing good graphics. I must confess its not an easy task at all. But no worries for those willing to get training videos on the subject. Adobe After Effects, Photoshop CS3, CS4, CS5, CorelDraw, AutoCAD 2013 are available.
