Nigeria Records 11,600 Maternal Deaths In 3 Months.......( WOW ) by OYINBOGOJU(m): 1:37am On Mar 23, 2013
LAGOS- SOCIETY of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria said, yesterday, that no fewer than 11,600 maternal deaths were recorded in Nigeria in the last three months, adding that 45 cases were recorded daily.

This came as the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, said the state would establish emergency toll-free lines solely designated for maternal cases.

Speaking at the Lagos West I Senatorial District Town Hall Meeting for maternal and child mortality reduction programme, at Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Chairman Lagos State Chapter of the Society, Dr. Oluwarotimi Akinola, said: "Nigeria accounts for a disproportionate 10 percent of the global maternal deaths. This ranked the country as the second highest in the world after India.

"The major causes of the high maternal mortality rate in Nigeria are hemorrhage infection, hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, obstructed labour and anaemia. Any effort by the government to drastically reduce maternal mortality rates must address the root causes of delays in seeking health care, accessing healthcare and receiving help at the centre."

Mrs Fashola said: "These lines would ensure that whenever any pregnant women are about to deliver, she can get help easily even when any of her relatives aren't available.

“The lines will be the same as the already established emergency toll free lines 767 and 112.

"The death of a pregnant woman or death after childbirth is a painful event with great social and economic impact on the family and the country.

"At the close of work today, about 800 women from different countries would have died from complications related to pregnancy and child birth.

"99 percent (792) of these will occur in developing countries, including Nigeria.

“This statistic, released by the Chairman of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Lagos sector, is alarming for a country that is regarded as the giant of Africa.

"This day (yesterday) will now be observed annually as Lagos State Maternal and Child Mortality Reduction Day."

"Let us bear in mind that the statistic can be reduced drastically only if pregnant women and mothers of children under five years visit the over 60 Primary Health Care, PHC, centres constructed across the state by the government, to get information on what to do when faced with challenging condition during pregnancy, childbirth and after delivery.

"The importance of this town hall meeting initiated by the state government is to sensitise residents of the state, especially nursing and mothers-to-be, on the maternal and child mortality reduction programme launched on October 18, 2012 by the governor.

put more money into health care - fed up of looking at private jets and fast cars and wish more money was spent on health, education and employment opportunities for all instead of rampant looting of funds

Stats in Nigeria should be taken with a pinch of salt, who counted, where, when? In a country where billions of dollars are allocated for census but the figures are always controversial, I don't believe those hastily made up figures.

Maternal deaths should be stopped as much as we can, but throwing around wild figures will not help anyone.

Why am I surprised? Healthcare in Nigeria is crappy so I am not surprised Nigerian women are losing their lives left and right while trying to bring a new life into the world. Its quite unfortunate!

That's scandalous o, though statistics in this nation can't be trusted. But on a serious note, why would a woman die, while bringing another life into existence?

This rate is very high. A lot of pregnant women consults quacks and even spiritual houses when they are pregnant instead of registering in a well established Government Hospital for antenatal. Some private hospitals taking delivery are not helping the case as most of them does not have a well trained Gyneacologist as there doctors. Often times, they endanger the lives of these pregnant mothers at the dying minutes only to be referred to general hospital when it is too late. I am talking from experience.

many privates hospital share specialits doctors with the genereal hospitals. When there is an emergency they have to wait for the specialist to finish from the general hospital or another hospital and this delay leads to death in most cases. A woman went for antenatal on tuesday and they noticed there was sometin wrong wit her baby.. They had to tell her to come back on friday to see the speciist because he works else were. On wednesday the woman gave birth to a dead baby. My point is if the hospital had its own specialist, the baby's life might have been saved. What if it went the other way round and the mother died. May God save us in this country

MY GAWD!!!! to produce a person requires a lot of mathematics and great deal of energy...sad truth is life is not valued in naija...look at the works of bokoharam, yet someone is asking for amnesty...thats why pregnat women run abroad after taking in. chronic poverty and comatose healthcare are also major contributory factors.

Talk is cheap. How can maternal mortality be reduced when the LASG cannot pay doctors CONMESS. How many specialists have been trained on emermency basic obstetric care? What has been done to educate pregnant women on the need to attend antenatal care?
The LASG is more interested in forming a megaparty (APC) & promoting the political interests of Tinubu & Fashola.
Most maternal deaths occur in the North-Eastern part of the country ravished by terrorists.

Not true actually. You see poor women having their children at home with little or no antenatal. Probably going back to work the next day! If anyone will die between mother and baby, its most likely baby with a poor woman.poor women that you see with 7-8 kids?Except she has serious medical complications. You will be surprised that it affects the comfortable to wealthy mostly.

Shocking aint it? Well, its time to stop eating dangerous food elements that are indeed dead food which cause terrible degenerative diseases. The same stupid government have set up a biotechnology agency,to grow food with genetic modified organisms while the people continue to accept without questioning..even the so called vaccines are suspect in this matter. While the media keeps the people in a state of complacency believing that our population is massive while they use Eugenics to reduce our number daily. infant mortality is tripple that number while infertile mothers are so so many..our numbers are being cut down daily by out mortal enemies whom we are so quick to worship.
