Okay, this man was an army general and he once ruled all of Iraq as Prime Minister. He came to power in 1958 after he overthrew the pro-British Iraqi monarchy. All members of the royal family were gunned down (Gaddafi also overthrew King Idris I in Libya in 1969).

His name? Abd al-Karim Qasim. Extremely popular with the Iraqis, he was called Al-Zaim, meaning 'The Leader' but he was not popular with the West. Why? He nationalized the oil companies and demanded that a greater share of the oil profits should go to the Iraqi people.

Upon coming to power, Qasim served the interests of the people, rewrote the Constitution to enable women participate in greater roles in the society, built 35,000 residential units for the poor, social welfare was improved, educational sector was boosted, he redistributed land to the farmers, expanded the middle class and had so many pro-people policies but his actions threatened the profits of the multinational foreign companies.

The CIA then hired a man to assassinate him. But the man failed to kill Qasim, who was just wounded. The assassin too escaped with some injuries. The assassins planned to ambush Qasim on the 7th Of October, 1959, And on the fateful day, Saddam began to shoot prematurely, spoiling the whole plan. Qasim's driver was shot dead while Qasim himself was hit in the arm and shoulder. The assassins believed they had killed him and quickly retreated.

Saddam later had to flee the country but the CIA would later bring him and install him as the new ruler of Iraq. You know the rest of the story.

Thus, the CIA was forced to send in the 'jackals' to 'take him out'. In 1963, he was overthrown and shot after a short trial. His execution was then shown live on TV. About 5,000 Iraqis lost their lives in the struggle. But guess the name of the assassin the CIA hired originally?
