Many Sites Hosted By Web4Africa Are Down by digidamage: 2:24pm On Apr 04, 2013
So since the 1st of April, all sites i have been hosting on web4africa have been down 90% of the time,

They are all Totally off now, i sent an email to their customer support, nobody replied..

With several clients on my neck and after loosing all patience ,today(thursday) i went to their Facebook page to complain again.

Instead of them to address the issue, the deleted my comment and rudely wrote

Please restrict your feedback to our support system. Email or chat. shocked

In other words.. If we are screwing-up, you have no right to say anything...

Meanwhile at least 3 of my clients run online-only business.. almost a whole working week is gone meaning a quarter of their income for this month is already lost...

It wasn't till after the Facebook Comment that i got an email..4 days after ...with 10 websites offline...that said..

Hello,

Apologies.
We have identified and are busy fixing the problem.
Warm regards,

Oluniyi,
Web4Africa Support

Every business has challenges but if your server is down, shouldn't you immediately contact your clients and apologize??

These people think they are doing us a favor ooo.

Abeg moderator, carry this thread to front page if you can, these people tend to slack if they aren't getting bad press besides people need to be aware. Maybe it will teach them proper customer support

I just thought i should support our own and look where it got me? As annoying as it is, my major problem isn't the downtime(everyone has them, though typically not to this extent)..it's the intensely horrible customer service..

And i left my godaddy account for this ooo..At least they had reliable and sensible customer care

For those that like facts,...
At the moment even their own site is offline

I dumped this Ghana people a long time ago. Did u not google web4africa before u decided to choose them? Cos am sure if u did, u will find a whole lot of issues with their hosting down time.

My one cent advice is, transfer all ur domain to a reliable host. Das all.

First of all, i am not in any way affiliated with this company but i would like to highligh some key things for you.

1) Facebook page might not be their primary support desk or even a convenient way to give customer support. You should stick to their support portal.

2) If you have been hosting with them for a while now, you may want to take a look at your past records with them before you take a decission. If the server is down, be sure they have hundreds of clients to answer to on this issue aswell which could be unsual for their support staff.

3) Nairaland might not be of help to you specifically, try to sort out with them. Ask them what the problem is and how fast will they restore you.

If it takes longer than you can tolorate, then you can switch host. But it could be just a temporary issue you know.

If you are swiching, you may consider these hosts:

http://gigalayer.com - I work here
http://syskay.com
http://whogohost.com
http://qservers.com
http://lagoshost.com

At GigaLayer we can offer you efforless migration of all your accounts, settings, databases & emails for free and 6 months additional hosting to compensate your lost time at Web4Africa.

i have no problem with their server being down..It's probably a rare occurance (though the 2nd major one in 5 months since i started hosting with them)
they are a webhosting company for crying out loud.. it your servers are down.. isn't the smart thing to do to bulk email your clients telling them of the issue?
Rather than wait for them to complain...
Like i said, my major grievance is the shoddy customer relations..
it's pretty simple...
An email sent out on day 1 of the problems might reduce half of the complaints

Great, give them some time or ask them how soon will the rest of the sites resume.

They may also address it via email later undecided

The owner of Web4Africa is a great guy and a Nigerian. He had been hosting sites long before I started Nairaland, and he was one of our initial set of members. I think these sorts of issues are a result of Web4Africa's massive size. It's very difficult to hold the hands of your customers when there are thousands of them instead of a few dozen. If you have thousands of customers and 1% of them are unhappy, things appear much worse than when you have 1 unhappy customer out of 100. Don't forget that they achieved their scale in Nigeria by acquiring our biggest hosting site - Nairahost - which was also having issues with support due to its massive size. We are probably not qualified to tell them how to run their business, but I believe they will figure out how to implement fantastic customer support and uptime at their huge scale sooner than later.

I wanted to host some site with them because then I dont have a credit card but their customer support turned me off I quickly applied for a Visa card which I am using for all my transactions now.
Re: Many Sites Hosted By Web4Africa Are Down by Nobody: 9:10pm On Apr 04, 2013
is it adviseable for me to use godaddy for my hosting?
Re: Many Sites Hosted By Web4Africa Are Down by digidamage: 9:11pm On Apr 04, 2013
Seun, i agree.. They are doing good.. if they weren't, admittedly, i wouldn't keep hosting websites with them...
But i cant say this enough, you have server downtime, you should either issue some kind of public statement or at least contact your clients immediately...
the downtime isn't my major grouse...heck , while not totally related...we remember how even RIM had global issues with their BB servers last year.. they survived... But the day it began, they quickly issued some public statement...
Thats all i ask...
Am a Video Production professional.. If i cant deliver my job on an agreed date for any reason.. I call my client, make my excuses , apologize and get back to work..
they may complain.. but will at least be happy at being informed..
Rather than perhaps i simply not show up at all and switch off my phone for days (basically the equivalent)

I once hosted a website locally and got burnt big time. Anyone who is serious about his business will go for a foreign host with a responsive customer care system. Seems our local host providers have not learnt the ropes of business enough to recognise that a fast a responsive customer care is key to sustainable business growth. That's why I recommend ListMasta.

My blog http://naijatech.com was hosted there. I noticed it about 3 days back.

Since i had an active host with hostgator, i quickly packed my things and left without any wasting time on ticket or online support. Cos they will hardly reply or not reply in time.

Having your site off is like running a business thats out of stock. Do you know what that means?

Its obvious that technology aint our best tin, africa is still 10yrs behind. I guess u were looking for some cheap webhost well u got what u wanted cheap n unreliable. Don't bother tryin to patronise african webhost sites dey haven't achieved the excellence on hosting web sites. MTN can't even give 70% voice call connection n it suppose to be d biggest telecom company in africa y u fink web hosting will be different.

Who said web4africa is cheap? Their gold package is 2 times that of Hostgator.
