NLs, what do u think about this idea of most cars in recent Times in our country always having there headlamps on while driving even in the day time all in the name of american specification. I don't want to believe that auto manufacturers will want to do such a thing. I have taken time to study cars that originally designed for nigerian marketers (like kia, hyundai, toyota peugeots etc) and the lamps are not always on. Most guys feel on top because of their glowing headlamp and while some foolish put theirs on just to feel among. A thought came to my mind that those steady on headlamps are like that as a result of change of location and as regards to security, If u can agree with me most cars in some foreign movies don't have their headlamps on. Pls I will like to share ur opinion irrespective of ur location, what do you think? Thanks.

Daytime Running Lights. And it is actually a safety feature. To help other drivers know your Car is in operation.

True. Though this is predominantly in countries where it may get dark early in the day. Not really Nigeria. The effect is lost in bright sunlight.

DRL's have been in operation in operation in Sweden since 1977, and is getting more wide spread in Europe, Canada and The Americas.

Its called DRL (Daytime Running Lights). I don't know why most Nigerians think if a car has a DRL then its American specs. The thing is most cars with DRL are from Canada because its mandatory that any cars produced in Canada must have it (since 1989). Some American cars also have DRL but not all. Its a safety feature do reduce daytime accident by letting u see an upcoming car from distance (I really don't buy that though, unless in severe weather conditions like snow, fog or heavy rain). Now some Nigerian drivers deliberately turn on their headlamps during the day, You can easily know its not DRL if the light is too bright (DRLs are not very brigh). Also check the tail light, if tail light is on then its not DRL. There's no way u can turn DRL off in most cars produced in Canada.. for some American cars there are ways to turn it off.

Now the spoiler.... DRL doesn't turn on when u start ur engine, however the moment u engage the gear it turns itself on and won't turn off again even if u return the gear to park and ur car is idling. Now in a situation where at night and u are driving slowly and don't want to be spotted by someone not very far from u.. say hoodlums or police... if ur car is one of those canadian cars with DRL then u are screwed because even with ur headlamps off, ur DRL will stay on and you will be spotted. My car has this stupid DRL and I was loving it at first but now I think its a pain especially when u are trying to avoid being spotted at night

I dont agree with some of the things you said.

By the way, USA & Canada cars are tag American specs.

You cannot say because your car Daytime Running light works in a particular way, all cars with that feature work with the same way. My Peugeot 406 is from Sweden. It has the Daytime Running Light. As soon as the engine starts running, the side lights & headlights (dipped) will come on, whether in neutral or in gear (note that mine is manual trans). And my rear/tail lights also come on when the engine is running. You can ask any 406 owner you know that have the Daytime Running Light, am sure they will tell you the same.

Have also observed that some of these power bike riders now does the same thing, is it also applicable to them or is that effizy?.

DRL is a good safety feature but a good "rewire guy" can defeat it for you. I won't.

Thanks for the correction about some DRL with rear lights on. Also when I said most cars with DRL are from Canada and USA, I said that because most Tokunbo cars in Nigeria are from North America. Also Ikenna, is there a way to turn off the lights at night.. like when everywhere is dark and u are on ur street and don't wanna attract anyone's attention.. How do u turn off the DRL.

About the DRL, I drive a 2004 Toyota Camry Canadian Spec, the fing is the DRL can be activated or deactivated- observe the switch Knob closely or read the car's user manual properly. I believe its the case in most cars where the DRL can either be enabled or disabled, but people dont know cuz they never had access to the car's user manuals.
When I deactivate the DRL, the lights go totally off, but when I activate them, on shifting the gear from park to either Reverse or Drive, the Lights come on and stay on.
Coming to fink of it, its been quite a while I posted Here (after Ikenna banned me for displaying humour- Bros I dey hail o, I don show)

I also disagree with elektra80 DRL on my car runs the moment you start the engine.

Elektra is very correct - different automobile DRL's operate differently.

I've driven a 2013 Kia Optima with DRL. They don't come on when you turn the ignition to the accessory position, or even when you start the car. Once you shift from P to D or R, the DRL's activate.

I am not saying Elektra is wrong, but to make it known that the system works at variant in different models. You have duly pointed that out. Kudos!

@poster: i think it's very wrong for you to assume that most drivers who have their lights running in daylight have deliberately switched them on. As most responses have pointed out, quite a number of cars, espescially the recent model ones, come fitted with DRLs which in themselves are designed by the manufacturers to acts as safety features. DRLs function differently on different cars: in some you can switch them off while in others you can't. I drive a 2007 accord EX-L and on my car you can't switch off the DRL. Most people would argue that the DRL feature is unnecessary in nigeria but that's not true! During the rainy season, in harmattan and even on a clear day when you are overtaking a very smoky truck/trailer your DRL might just be that feature that may save you from a collision!!!

Thank God for Google, so one can always research stuff and kill ignorance...avoid making a fool of oneself.

My "new" car came from the US and it has this feature. I totally hate it...think it's irritating. Battery life waste, plus i tend to associate it in my subconscious with unruly political/military escort drivers with blaring sirens.

I wish i could make it stop sad angry embarassed undecided cry

How can the DRL's on your car irritate you? It's not like you can see them whilst driving.

And as for battery waste, that doesn't make much sense. Your car's battery is for starting and reserve power. Once your engine is running, your battery is charged by the alternator, and voltage will be at least 2 volts over nominal battery output.
