LAGOS (AFP) - Unidentified gunmen in oil-rich southern Nigeria on Sunday night kidnapped an 11-year-old boy, wounding his mother and killing the family's police guard and their driver, an army officer said.

The boy, the son of Chidi Nzerem, the manager of a local free trade zone, was seized in Port Harcourt, the country's main oil hub, as he was being driven back to boarding school after the weekend, according to Musa Sagir of the Joint Task Force, the body responsible for policing the Niger Delta.

The kidnappers have not so far demanded a ransom and the boy's mother is receiving hospital treatment for her injuries, he told AFP on Monday.

No further details of the attack were available.

The past nine months have seen armed groups in the delta, and in Port Harcourt in particular, target the children of prominent Nigerians in order to hold them for ransom.
