Bulk SMS Marketing – 3 Real Reasons Why Nigerians Fail At It by Edwin7: 2:13pm On Apr 17, 2013
Want to know the real reasons why you don’t get the results you want in your bulk SMS marketing campaigns? Especially as a Nigerian? Here are three real reasons why.

1. Misunderstanding what SMS marketing really is – Most Nigerians think that bulk SMS “BLASTING” (broadcasting bulk SMS to every Tom, Dick, and Harry) is the same thing as bulk SMS “MARKETING.” How wrong! The real definition of marketing is educating and motivation people to desire your product. And it is done overtime. Besides, it’s a process with several sequences and principles in between that must be observed.

So, hoping to get massive or any result at all from blasting your bulk SMS to people you don’t even know and who don’t know you is simply unrealistic. Bulk SMS works better when combined with other marketing methods.

2. Sending bulk SMS to untargeted and poor quality phone numbers – Many Nigerians buy and rent phone numbers from sources they can’t even verify. These numbers are usually in thousands and millions and claimed to be arranged by local government and states. So, folks in need of quick results buy these GSM numbers and blast their marketing messages to them, then sit back for the orders to pour in.

And the orders don’t usually pour in because the phone numbers are not targeted and they of poor quality… meaning that the people you send your bulk SMS to didn’t need your product in the first place and may not even be based in your locality. It’s like trying to sell camera to a blind man. Marketing success rests on this principle: Say the right thing to the right people at the right time at the right place.

3. Little or no follow-up – It’s long been established that about 80% of people buy when follow up are made for at least seven times. But Nigerians will send one or two bulk text messages and stop when they don’t see any result. This is one of the main reasons bulk SMS marketing fail in the hands of Nigerians.

Way forward: Take your time to educate and inspire your prospects to desire and buy your products using bulk SMS, build a phone number list from scratch of rent them from a trusted source related to what you’re promoting, and do follow ups adequately depending on what you’re selling.
