The Central Bank of Nigeria recently released a guideline requiring bankers to certain businesses to comply with an additional Know Your Customer in respect of those businesses’ accounts. All Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs) are required to obtain a certificate of registration from the Special Control Against Money Laundering (SCUML) of the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, failing which they would not be allowed to operate their accounts.
The affected businesses include:
- Dealers in Jewellery, Precious Metals & Stones
- Dealers in cars and luxury goods
- Chartered and Professional Accountants
- Audit firms
- Tax Consultants
- Clearing and Settlement Companies
- Lawyers and Notaries
- Supermarkets
- Hotels and Hospitality industries
- Estate Surveyors, Valuers and Real Estate agents
- Religious and Charitable Organisations
- Trust Company Service providers (who provide service to third parties)
- Casinos (including internet and Ship based casinos)
- Pool Betting
- Any form of lottery
- Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
