The Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P has assured Nigerians of smooth driving through the nation’s roads as funds are being provided for road rehabilitations.

The Convener, SURE-P/ Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA on Public Works, Dr. Ngozi Olojeme, boasted that Nigerian roads are safe for smooth driving.

“Roads are actively being maintained in the phase one of the project. Nigerian roads were left in a dilapidated state to the extent that a lot of lives were lost. FERMA is devoting its energy to road maintenance all over the country. We have to work daily to achieve our mandate. We have been travelling across the states to ensure results are achieved. We are doing it geopolitically and every state will be adequately represented, so that Nigerians can travel on well maintained roads,” she said.

Dr. Olojeme boasted: “Nigerian roads are no more death traps. If you say they were death traps, yes, but now, they are not.”

She spoke while leading SURE-P’s technical partners, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, on an inspection tour of the Abuja-Kaduna highway where workers were patching different portions of the road and clearing the grass along the median.

She also disclosed that five motorised truck slashers have been  procured to hasten work on five major roads. They are Enugu-Port-Harcourt, Benin-Ore, Benin-Asaba, Ibadan-Ife, and Abuja-Kaduna highways.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s determination to keep the Federal highways free of potholes all-year round, Olojeme stated that about 5,000 workers youths have been employed so far, and that the figure would be scaled up to 10,000 by year-end in first instance.

The aim, she said, was that they would provide safe, motorable road linkages across the economic zones of the country.

Speaking on cracks that were visible along the roads, she said keeping watch and patching them was the essence of the SURE-P public works programme.

Any road can receive attention. However, if the job isn't being done right, then there's no point in doing it at all. Anyone can patch a hole in the road and say it's no longer a death trap. Yes, for the time being. Don't be surprised when these roads fall apart within two years again, due to thin cement and lack of soil tests. Because of the kind of rain and heavy traffic Nigerian roads face, especially in the south, the layer of cement shouldn't be any thinner than 10 inches, and that's being lenient.

There is a road in Enugu State that is 15 inches thick. Most of the dilapidated roads may have been less than 6 inches thick undecided

It will be good if that will be the national standard, but the different states do not have the same financial resources. The thicker the road, the more money needed for its construction. However, the FG could adopt the Enugu model as its own standard for inter-state highways.

Calabar- Ogoja Federal road or aint it a federal road? Travelling this road is like a suicide mission. . Not only the pot holes buh also the narrowness of the road

And to think that its a major trunk that links the south to the north, you have millions plying the road everyday and many loosing their lives.. No construction whatsoever is going on there.

Thanks for breaking it down in plain and simple language.

You need to check out a different attempt to dazzle Nairalanders with an ABC billboard, back in March of this year: https://www.nairaland.com/1237669/nigerian-roads-getting-better-abc

But then, as the proof of the pudding is in the eating, it did not take long for even ABC to reverse itself grin

ABC transport boss blames accidents on poor roads

Published on Thursday, 02 May 2013 05:00 Written by Johnkennedy Uzoma, Owerri

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of ABC Transport Plc, Mr. Frank Nneji, said yesterday that the nation in the past few months recorded unprecedented accidents due to the poor state of roads in the country.

Nneji, while addressing drivers and attendants of his company during the 2013 Accident-Free Award ceremony in Owerri, said 280 deaths, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps, were recorded from 480 road accidents between December 19, 2012 and January 3, 2013.

“An indication that within two weeks, about 323 people sustained various degrees of injuries from accident in the first quarter of 2013”,he said.

He said his company spends a lot of resources to make sure that drivers and attendants are brought up to date on modern trends not only in defensive driving, but in road safety and management.

Speaking earlier, chairman of the occasion and Assistant Corps Commander, Head, Motor Vehicle Administration of the FRSC, Mr.Anderson A.Ogarekpe, commended Nneji for using his company to reduce unemployment.

It looks like Nigerian (Federal) roads are still in a state of anomie, which entails engaging in a macabre dance when driving on them.

It's amazin how u kept saying 'cement', and it looks so odd to me! How can a sane man say 'cement' and '10inch thickness' for roads and rehabilitation respectively? But i was restained from attacking u wen i realised dt in dt area, u are an illiterate. But wldnt it be nicer is u kept it neutral? Instead of thinkin u knw?

I can now drive from Abuja to Enugu without stress. Let us say the truth when we see it. SURE-P's road rehabilitation is working. We cannot expect them to fix every single road at once. That would be asking too much. Mind you, even the US has bad roads. You guys need to go to some interstates in the US or go to Los Angeles and see how the roads are like.

I hope someone with sharp camera that can take some of the pictures of the road can help us broadcast it as soon as possible so that people can see some of their lies.
