Nigeria ranks among the highest exporters of crude
oil in the world. Billions of dollars accrue to Nigeria
from the sales of crude oil and the economy of the
country is built on the revenues from crude oil
exports. In spite of the huge revenues that come
into Nigeria on daily basis, the Nigerian government
is among the borrowing nations of the world. Nigeria
is among the poorest nations in the world with risky
level of infant mortality rate; malnutrition and child
killer diseases, poor educational and health systems;
crime and other social mischiefs are on the increase.
In the midst of these calamities torturing the people
of Nigeria, the Nigerian lawmakers goes home
monthly with a whopping and staggering amount.
Recently, the lawmakers met to increase the basic
salary for civil servants from 7,000 to 18,000 naira
monthly; that is from about 46 to 120 US dollars per
month. Millions of others are unemployed while few
are employed in the private sector where the take
home pay is far bellow the civil servants’. The
pressure in the Nigerian society has become so
tensed that people are being forced into different
kinds of crime for survival. How much is the pay
package of the Nigerian lawmakers?
How Much Do Nigerian Lawmakers Earn?
Professor Itse Sagay, a renowned scholar of law in
his lecture titled; ‘Legislating for the Common Good:
Contemporary Issues and Perspectives’, to mark the
47th birthday anniversary of the Lagos State
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Comrade
Opeyemi Bamidele, berated the attitude of the
Nigerian lawmakers as being cruel and tantamount to
betrayal of the trust placed on them by the
electorate. He explained that Nigerian lawmakers at
the lower and upper chambers of the National
Assembly are the highest paid legislators in the
world. Professor Sagay explain that a senator in
Nigeria earns 240 million naira (about 1.7 million US
dollars) in salaries and allowances and a member of
the House of Representatives earns 204 million naira
(about 1.45 US dollars) per annum. There are 109
Senators and 360 members of the House of
Representatives. He went on to explain that an
American Senator earns 174,000 US dollars while a
UK parliamentarian earns about 64,000 US dollars
per annum. Going by the above analysis, a Nigeria
Senator earns almost ten times the salary of his US
counterpart and more than twenty times the salary
of a UK parliamentarian.
He also said that in 2009, the federal legislators
received a total of 102.8 billion naira, comprising 11
billion naira as salaries and 90.96 billion naira as non-
taxable allowances. He wondered how justified it is
for a Nigerian lawmaker to earn more than the
president of the United States of America which is
undoubtedly the largest and richest economy in the
world. President Barack Obama, earns $400,000 per
annum; 1.3 million US dollars lesser than the salary
of a Nigerian senator. He said that the British Prime
Minister, Mr. David Cameron earns just $190,000 a
year which is more than 1.5 million US dollars less
than a Nigerian senator’s salaries. Professor Sagay
also said that the Senate President is on a special
monthly salary of 88.33 million naira, while his deputy
is on 50 million naira; 1.24 billion naira is paid as
quarterly allowances to the 10 principal officers of
the Senate, while other principal officers earn 78
million naira every three months. The situation has
gone so bad that more than 70 per cent of national
income now goes into paying salaries and allowances
of political office holders who form less than one per
cent of the Nigerian population.

^^^^^^^^^^ so $99000/month for our senate president - a public worker - is justified when Russia's president takes home less than $200000/annum?

What Obama earns in 1yr, GEJ spends on food in 12days.

LMAO

Nigerians, the biggest cowards on the face of the earth, deserve the Govt they get.

But, then again, you cant blame them when they got some that'll support corruption, greed, and a malfunctioning society by giving this wreck of a Govt 98.9% votes when election time comes around.

Sad but unfortunately true. People need to realize how much top officials like Angela Merkel earn -roughly $300000, more or less. Only then will they realize that we are being f**ked by those at Aso rock.

This goes to show that the federal legislators (and the Presidency too) need to massively cut down their salaries and allowances. $99,000/month is just the height of absolute insensitivity!

^^^^^ I'm starting to think the only reason they aspire to get those positions is cause of the huge, albeit unreasonable, stipend. Yet they still embezzle so much even after their obscene wages.

Duh! That's why politics in Naija is mostly a "do or die" affair. They know that a million dollar annual salary is at stake, plus other kick-backs.

They know, and I bet you the people would rise if everyone came onboard as one entity but when the people are divided along tribal and religious lines nothing will be achieved because the Govt knows that theres a section of the country that'll support it even when it is clearly wrong. A good example is when the riots happened over fuel subsidy removal. Another example are the constant excesses of the Jonathan Administration. In other climes, GEJ wouldve been forced to resign after the 2nd gaffe he ever committed. This is a President that has committed crime after crime against the Nigerian State yet hes still in power, why? Because he has a blank check from those thatll support him based on his religion and tribe.

So, dont think they dont know, they do know, but a certain section of Nigeria will rather cut their nose to spite their face all in the name of tribe and religion.

To put it into more perspective, U.S. Senators and Representatives only earn about $100,000 per year, with the principal officer earning a little more! The Governor of California earns $170,000 a year.
Also, President Obama pays for his and his guests' meals on 'Airforce 1', and pays for his laundry from his salary

Yes, they do.

If the opposition parties partake in such monumental fraud, does it then mean that these opposition parties are not what the say they are?

That's classic hypocrisy from them. For the opposition to have some credibilty, they have to call for a reduction of the obscene emoluments they receive annually.

truth is, they make all sorts of promises during campaign including reduction of wages. In my opinion, if they are serious about it, they should start making noise whilst in/out of office. To cap it all off, the media hardly report about it. Just imagine if this was the case in the US.

This information has been known for quite a while, yet...

Then will come the obligatory huffing and puffing on this thread until they grudgingly accept the status quo and go back to their jobs. Meanwhile, I'll stake a bet that another would be back to resurrect the same fact on a new thread weeks later.

Reason why politics is do or die in Nigeria. undecided

@GenBuhari, is Buhari aware that legislators from his party CPC collect these allowances? If he is aware, what has he done about it?

not necessarily but considering the fact that US is the world's greatest nation, then ideally so. Your question should be: should our senators and house of reps members earn 3 times more than Obama and 7 times more than Putin? Then what does our president earn?
