Lagos plans Hi-Tech traffic management system

Lagos state Government yesterday concluded a one-week training course for over 500 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, aimed at equipping them with necessary knowledge and skills to manage traffic with Hi-Tech equipments.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa while addressing the officers at the end of the training held in Alausa Secretariat, said that the training will help the officers to utilise the hi-tech equipments that would be acquired by the state government very soon for traffic management in the state.

According to Opeifa, “The state government has concluded plans to acquire hi-tech traffic software to move traffic and transport management from the present manual analogue to a more sophisticated and scientific based mode.”

He added that the training and the equipments will afford the officers ability to manage traffic with easy.

The commissioner expressed the hope that participants would at the end of the training master the fundamentals of the various areas of hi-tech traffic and incidence management and other strategic related areas.

Earlier in his goodwill message, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Adesegun Ogunlewe said that the workshop provides a veritable platform for professionals to learn about best practices which are in conformity with acceptable global standard in some areas of core competence in traffic and traffic engineering.

Mr Ogunlewe, described the training as a step in the right direction as the government could now boast of informed professionals and institutions that would consistently seek to improve the process of service delivery, while not compromising standard and compliance.

Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Mrs. Florence Oguntuase, said public servants should understand the key policy thrust of the State Government in order to situate the relevance and importance of their services.

The Commissioner therefore charged the participants to absorb all the knowledge they can and subsequently put them to good use at their various duty posts to justify the investment of the government in improving their competences and capabilities.

The all inclusive workshop have participants drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies whose services directly or indirectly impact on public transportation including students from the School of Transport of the Lagos State University, Ojo.

The facilitators are from two world acclaimed Transport Engineering Consortium from the United States of America, Info Trans Engineering Incorporated, New Jersey and Sam Schwartz Engineers, New York.

It is expected that the participants at the end of workshop would be able to identify techniques and conduct Road Safety Audit, design effective traffic control plan and demonstrate detailed understanding of advanced incident management and rescue operations, amongst others.

Upgrading things for LASTMA? I hope they will use it effectively. Our law enforcement agencies know how to abuse things and intimidate helpless Nigerians. All the same, nice development from the LASG.

While this is commendable, I'm more excited by measures being put in place to get people off the roads. Measures like the LRT, LCCT, Tram, ferry and even the BRT system.

There's no description of what the Hi-tech traffic management system will entail. However, I'm aware that Lastma and police officials already use the auto-inspector devices that were purchased by LASG.

We have noted the PLAN and hope it is not expected to become reality in 2020 (i.e. five years after Fashola's second mandate as tenant of Alausa house has expired) as is the PROMISE for pipeborne water in the state.

Meanwhile any chance of doing RIGOROUS orientation and reform training for these former touts and agberos who form the bulk of LASTMA and other similar agencies to reduce if not eliminate their EXTORTIONist mode

Why do we laud Lagos State Government's development plans unlike what are admissible for the Federal Government and other PDP led State Governments?

Can we learn to separate facts on the ground and projects and programs under construction/(formation stage) as there tendencies that most projects and aspirations in Nigeria are abandoned or transmitted to the mercy of future administration?

I can vividly conclude that there are unfair and inequitable use of media propaganda to the benefit of South West Politicians when compared to their counterpart across other regions.

Ngwakwe:

That is partly because of what is referred to as the Lagos axis press which dominates the media.
One can ascribe the greater presence of media houses in the south west to the great sage Awolowo's emphasis on education that was carried forward in the 80s by UPN governors.
But our New Age "progressives" in the Association of Conmen in Nigeria said no need for free education any longer as we are adequately encouraged to know the importance of education.

Eko Atlantic:

Those days of free education are over in SW. Free education was implemented by Awolowo to encourage Yorubas to study then, while other regions were still in stone age. Yorubas don't need encouragement anyone because every family knows the importance of education. You wonder why SW higher institutions have the highest cut-off and requirement for admission, because competition to gain admission in SW is too high, everybody wants to be a graduate.

Does enugu, delta, akwa ibom have lastma to direct traffic?
NO
Good network of roads do it for them.
Fash fix d bad roads, and build new ones for people to use devoid of toll income revenue generating motives. D earlier we fix our roads without d usual excuse of tagging some roads federal or state or local govt roads, d better for chaotic lagos traffic.

If you can reach T. A. Orji's threads where he signed different MOUs with different Western and Asians Captains of industries on establishment of industries in various locations in Abia State and the corresponding responses in those threads from Nairalanders including Ngwakwe, there are always skepticism unless those projects reach 75% completion or are commissioned.

Nobody gives credit to T. A. Orji or Peter Obi for initiating an uncompleted development plan, signing of MOU or flagging off any project whereas we are inundated with praises of S/Western Governors "will" futuristic terms initiated projects and development plans. Whether these projects will ever be completed or not become issue for another day.

12 car owners pay before I pay my own last week- Because if the car gets to their Oshodi office,na looong thing be that..BAD EGGS.

You have just decided to ignore the substantive point I want us all to note. You mean, value system should be used in measuring standards seeing that it's dependent on personal/groups opinions and varies with emotional/social impulses.

Fashola

* collects billions monthly from Abuja federal allocation that flows from Niger Delta oil.
* raises tens of billions from our pockets, wallets, handbags and purses as IGR.
* borrows billions yet again to be repaid from our taxes and those of our unborn children

which he then spends on

* 29 billion cable bridge of less than 1.5kms, which he then tolls.
* 30 billion EXPANSION of Ikorodu road
* 2 billion Falomo link bridge of less than .5km
* 20% gas cylinder subsidy to Oando, the company of his oga on the top.
* and other cheap & cheerful yoyo projects at hyper inflated costs.

YET you want us to provide desks and chairs for PUBLIC primary schools that Fashola has FAILED WOEFULLY to cater for
That is not only being a mugu, it is being a super mugu!!!

That is why some of us will continue to laugh at the so called Fashola's achievements because they are all paper stuff. Just imagine things that have been lauded in the last few weeks...

1. A slab making factory

2. Plans to generate 50MW

3. A cooking gas shop

4. 1 suspension bridge in 6 years (14 years ACN) with N300 toll on each pass

5. Lastma traffic training

This is so pathetic and shameful. If this is all this man has achieved after 6 years, then he has done nothing. What we expect

1. A few world class hospitals

2. Good public schools not the ones without chairs and astronomical school fees

3. Good roads, not only in ikoyi but in Ikeja, Ikotun, Isolo, Sattelite town, Ikorodu, etc

4. Portable drinking water in homes

Just to mention a few. I will commend Fashola for his beautification project and the traffic lights, but apart from that, he has done nothin much else. How many major roads has he built in the last 6 years? Lagos drainage is still a disaster. No improvement in the water ways. The BRT has become molue again with 45 sitting and 99 standing. I could go on and on but the facts are there to speak for themselves. Most of what you hear is propaganda and more propaganda!

Isnt it shameful and a true sign of failure for someone to post this as an achievement of a serving governor after 6 years? This is like community news item, not a national news item. It shows a lack of real stuff on the ground.

GEJ under 2 years has rehabilitated the Lagos-Kano and Aladja-Ajaokuta rail tracks and they are back up running. The Abuja city rail is nearing completion too while Fashola/ACN light rail is still crawling at snail speed after 6 years. Yet they say he is performing. They even compare him with Akpabio who has been building stuff from scratch. Even the much talked about Lekki road is not a new road. It was only expanded and is now being tolled. Ikorodu road hopefully will be completed before the end of the world. Every other major BRT road belongs to the FG!
