Did you know that snails are the most prolific livestock animal producing more than 150 eggs at a time in one clutch? Its also the livestock that requires less stress in breeding them. You can buy a baby snail for less than N30 and make more than N200 as profit on such snail when it reaches table size.

The prolific aspect is that you can decide to breed 4 snails and before a year runs out you will have more than a thousand snails in your snail farm.
So let me take you into the commercial and medicinal/ nutritional value of snails.

Introduction to Snail Farming:

Snails are derived from the wild life environment and are used as food, feed or source of revenue in given parts of the world. Usually unknown to animal production specialists and often officially ignored also by the livestock services of their home areas even though their meat may be appreciated and command a higher price than more conventional animals.

Snails are invertebrates with soft bodies covered with hard carcareous shells. More also snails are hermaphrodites i.e. they are capable of reproducing on their own without any form of mating with a female or male gamete.
Snails are often found lying around in bushes across West Africa, even till recent days but there as been significant change in finding them now lying in bushes due to heavy deforestation. We can easily find them in bushes during the wet season, normally from April-September in large quantities.

Now some farmers found it as a lucrative livestock and they adopted it and started rearing them. This process is known as “Heliculture”.
Snails do not require much money in feeding them as their food is naturally available in form of green leaves and some fruits.

Nutritional/Medicinal Value of Snail:

Snail meat is high in protein than that of pig, poultry, fish cattle, sheep and swine. Iron content (45-59mg/kg), low in fat (0.05-0.08). and contains almost all the amino acids needed for human nutrition. Recent studies indicated that the glandular substances from edible snails cause agglutination of some of certain bacteria, which could be of value against a variety of ailments. It can also be used to combat some body illness of human including whooping cough, anemia.

Commercial Value of Snail:

Consumption of snail globally:
There is a flourishing international trade of snails in Europe and North America. In France the annual requirement is about 5million kg; 60% of which is imported. The estimated annual consumption in Italy is 306million snails. In West Africa snail meat has traditionally been a major ingredient in the diet of people living in the Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon.

In spite of the considerable external and demand, commercial snail farms such as those in Europe, South-East Asia and the Americas do not exist in West Africa. Here in West Africa snails are gathered from the forest.

Demand for snail meat in Nigeria:

Snail farming is one of the most lucrative farming Venture anyone can embark on in Nigeria. It is far easier than any other animal rearing business and twice more profitable too.
Snails are real source of wealth and the great thing about snail is that, its in high demand. If you have good quality of snails, hotel and eateries will literally queue on door for it because it is used for making very high priced nutritious delicacies.

Sadly, Nigerians are inclined to go into business that carry so much noise and bells, thereby neglecting such lucrative area of business like snail farming; in Nigeria which can as well be exported to international countries and earn huge foreign currencies.

You can get a baby snail @d rate of N30-N50 depending on the farmer's price (so reliable source to get your snail is from the bush or from the farmer). Bt i won't advice you to go for baby snails if you want to make it as a business especially if you're new to snail farming. Though you can still order it to test run your farm for you to get the idea of how to breed snails from the scratch especially getting to know their pets and diseases.

lol, reduced? Don't know about that but i think if you monitor your farm very well and also feed them with the right proportion it may help but i'm not saying it will reduce it to lessthan 12 months oo. It seems you want fast money! Lol...

Though the snail poplutaion will be multiplied in lessthan 15 months(thats if you're breeding from the baby stage like 2 weeks old). If you're breeding from the adult stage (point of lay), just with 3 snails with proper care no doubt you will have nothing lessthan 600 snails within 12months thats if you're breeding with d right specie.

uwc! Its good to be ambitious.. But wanting to make fast cash in snail farming without studying/going through the normal procedures may seem discouraging at d shortrun (because you might face some circumstances like pests/diseases, thats if you don't know how to handle it properly) bt on d longrun you will definitely make your thousands to millions. When fully been utilized. Wish you success

How can one get rid of ants, millipede, lizards, flies from the snail farm?

are you making use of open ground method for your snail farm? Because i don't see no reason why u should have all those kind of pests in your snail house if its well protected with net except for ants whcih is also easily manageable to control. So correct the issue by mounting nets around the farming area. Though i'll advice you to use pen house with a soil deep of 10inch to control ants also secure the pen with nets. Change the soil periodically to avoid flies nd ants in the future. Also remove food reminants(such as fruits or inorganic foods that you serve them that has spend morthan two days though its rear) in the pen. Clean d snail house but don't over do it because it may also cause damage to the snails.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT AFRICAN GIANT SNAIL:

What is a Giant African Land Snail?

A Giant African Land Snail is a snail that originates from Africa, of the genus Achatina, Archachatina and Metachatina. There are many different types, many of which are found in captivity. These include including Achatina fulica, Achatina achatina, Archachatina marginata, Achatina iredalei and many more.

How long do they live for?

Giant African Land Snails can live for 10 years, but the average is more like 5 or 6 years.

How long do they take to become adults?

Giant African Land Snails vary in their growth rates. If kept in optimum conditions, you can expect your snails to start laying eggs between nine months and two years, depending on the species and how they are kept. Snails keep growing throughout their lifetime, but slow down on reaching maturity.

When do they stop growing?

Giant African Land Snails continue growing throughout their life, but they grow quicker when they are younger, when plenty of food is available.

Do they come in different colours?
Yes. Achatina fulicas shell range from a dark brown, through to a greeny-brown and light tan colour, and may or may not have stripes. Achatina achatina has a brown shell with tiger like stripes, Achatina iradelei have a pale yellow shell, and the body of Achatina immaculata can be a very pale grey or tan. In the separate Achatina and Archachatina species, the variations of shell and body pattern and colour vary tremendously, and sometimes only an expert can tell the different species apart.

What senses do they have?
Giant African Land Snails can sense light and dark, temperature and humidity, rough and smooth, they can taste, they can see?not sure of they can smell though in the human sense.

Do they have personalities?
I think so! Some snails are greedier and eat more, some are more laid back, some are lazy, some just rush around everywhere, and some prefer being handled to others.

How fast are they?
The average speed for a Giant African Land Snail is about 0.04 miles per hour.

What's the most common species?
The most common Giant African Land Snail you are likely to find in captivity is Achatina fulica.

What's the largest species?
The largest ever Giant African Land Snail is a species called Achatina achatina, and one individual grew to 15 inches long.

How many eggs does a Giant African Land Snail lay?
It can lay over 300 eggs in one go, though the species varies, there are some which lays from one to twenty eggs at a time.

How can I get rid of unwanted eggs?
Freeze them for a couple of days, crush them or burn them.

How can you tell if a snail is sexually mature? The snails which develop aperture teeth and/or reflected lip are sexually mature when these features are developed. For those without these physical features only size can be used. When the shell is almost full size, it is sexually mature. To learn more follow the link at the bottom of the main post

Methods Of Snail Identification/Classification ( Snail Stomach Analysis)

Understanding these means through which aquatic organisms accumulate their trace of Heavy metals from the environment has always been complicated by the existence of the soluble and the dietary sources. For many aquatic invertebrates, trophic transfer accounts for a major portion of total trace element accumulation. In the field, the ecotoxicological approach is very difficult for evaluation of the impact of heavy metals in an aquatic environment, due to the complexity of interrelationships between organisms and the ecosystem. However, field studies can enable assessment of the long-term effect on organisms of heavy metals. The underlying regulator of metal concentrations accumulated by animals in tissue is the balance between accumulation and elimination (both of which vary according to the organism’s accumulation strategy and diluting body growth) (Colac et al., 2006)

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Study Area

The study area is Abakaliki metropolis which happens to be the capital of the present day Ebonyi state. Abakaliki is located 64 kilometers southeast of Enugu in the south eastern part of Nigeria with 13 local government areas, having so many freshwater and marine habitats. It has latitude of 6.32oN and a longitude of 8.12oE. Agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents containing various organic and inorganic pollutants, like solvents, oils, heavy metals, pesticides and fertilizers etc. from both natural and anthropogenic sources are invariably discharged into these aquatic habitats directly or indirectly through run-off, leaching or seepage especially during the rainy season or as windblown materials during the dry season without their proper treatment. These lead to changes in the water quality. The waters are being used for public, industrial supply, irrigation and fishing purposes, therefore it is imperative to monitor the metal pollution. Furthermore there have never been any published reports on this background. These freshwater habitats were selected on the criterion of possessing various freshwater snails and presumed to accumulate heavy metals. The freshwater habitats that served as the precise study areas were; Unagboke stream, Ituma stream, Oni stream, Ngele stream, and Amike–aba stream.
