Marriage

Although Muslims are permitted to have four wives, Afar marriages are usually monogamous. Girls may marry as early as age ten. Marriages between first cousins are preferred, particularly between a man and his father's sister's daughter. The night of the full moon is favored for a wedding ceremony, and the presence of someone able to read the Koran is required.

Once married Afar women typically wear a traditional indigo-dyed headdress or headscarf known in Qafar language as "shash", as seen below worn by a English visitor.

Women run the home and settlement and set up the houses, which they carry on camels when they move. Women milk the goats and make butter or ghee. They are also the musicians in the tribe.

Marriage preference is first cousin, as is also common among Semitic peoples. Descent and marriage, however, follow the father's clan ("patrilocal" ) rather than the mother's ("matrilocal" ).

Divorce rates are high. grin grin

Interaction with outsiders & hospitality:

The legendary hostility of the Afar people must be viewed in a cultural context. They are not more hostile towards strangers crossing their lands than we would be when a stranger would pass through our garden gate and walk through the garden without our permission.

A visitor to the Afar homelands will always find himself in tribal or family territory. Routes and tracks cannot really be viewed as public walkways as they always cross lands considered by the afar as their own. The fact of producing an official warrant from the government which allows you to travel through Afar country is not always enough.

Tradition rules that the tribal chief is personally responsible for anything that happens on his lands, including the safety of visitors. He will therefore not like you crossing his territory without doing him homage and ask him permission. Afar hospitality is an essential characteristic of their culture but he who defies the traditional rules of this society may expect to raise trouble.

****because of the legendary "ready and willing to fight" attitudes of the Afar in the ancient days, today they are still burdened with the stereotype that they are hostile and uninviting which is not true. The reason why they carry guns is to protect livestock from predators and rival clans/ethnic groups.

Afar hair/beauty:

From teeth chiseling to their unique style of hair braiding, the afar are known for the various styles of hair braiding and standards of beauty. smiley

The afar are likened to the ancient peoples of Egypt due to their fashion sense esp. the usage of animal fat/butter to keep the hair styles in place much like how westerners use hair gel.

Unlike most western societies in which men tend to limit their hair styles while the women are more creative, the opposite is seen among the afar.

women typically wear braids that show their marital status or clan affiliation which is complimented with tribal marking on their faces.

Braids
Mostly worn out by young afar women.
these are hidden under the shash as the women age (esp. after marriage).

Jewelry/beads:
Nose piercing is common among afar women

Varying from region/clan, the afar women typically enhance the beauty of their
braids with colorful locally made hair beads.

To the Afar, scarification and *teeth chiseling are signs of beauty for women.

*men also partake in teeth chiseling.

Afar men and their hair styles.

Afar men typically wear their hair in many styles
ranging from afros, low cut, curled to tightly coiled (resembling dreadlocks)

More so than the women, Afar men tend to be very particular about the way they look.

Afros:

Curled (with the aid of butter/fat):

Afar dances and their significance:

Dance is an important and supports the important moments of life.

There are three main types of dances performed by the Afar:

Laale - male only dance (LAALE)
Malabo - women only dance (MALABO)
Keeke - performed by members of both sexes (usually during marriage ceremonies)

in the video the way that they are
preparing the meat of the animal is
apparently the Islamic way. I don't know much
about that but there is a specific way they have to
skin the animal before preparing it.

@4:17 the video features footage of some Afar tribesmen
from back in the day. (They still look the same smiley cheesy)

from the comments:
We afar doesn't like tigray from Eritrea or Amhara from Ethiopia.
One day those kush Muslim people and brothers beat and take you out from east africa

smh.
tribalism is no good. these people are too cool for all that. undecided

Afar love songs.
What is interesting about these people is how though kissing and public signs of affection is looked down upon, they still have an abundance of love songs.

I like Afar music. It's modern but still true to the culture. smiley
