Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was on life support in a Pretoria hospital late Wednesday, said an official who had been briefed in detail on his condition.

Considered the founding father of South Africa's democracy, Mandela, 94, has been hospitalized since June 8 for a recurring lung infection.

Authorities have described his condition as critical since Sunday, and President Jacob Zuma said earlier Wednesday that Mandela's condition remained unchanged, South Africa's national news agency reported.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the government said Mandela's doctors "continue to do their best to ensure his recovery, well-being and comfort."

As the nation remained on edge, police barricaded the street leading to the hospital's main entrance. Well-wishers hung balloons, stuffed animals and messages of support along the wall outside his Pretoria hospital.
Crowds hovering nearby sang "Where is Mandela?"
"We need you!," one sign read. "We love you tata, get well soon!" said another, referring to Mandela by the Xhosa word for father. Someone else left a stone upon which was written, "Sending you light and love."

Several members of the family came out to collect some of those items Wednesday.
"He's going to feel a lot better when he sees these signs," said David Manaway, Mandela's grandson-in-law.

Why Mandela has six names Mandela's former physician and the nation's ex-surgeon general, Dr. Vejay Ramlakan, also visited the hospital Wednesday, said the national news agency, South African Press Association.

Mandela became an international figure while enduring 27 years in prison for fighting against apartheid, the country's system of racial segregation. He was elected the nation's first black president in 1994, four years after he was freed.

Time for anyone to say their 'Last words" IMO or forever hold their peace. Mandela is one of the greatest black men to have ever walked the surface of the earth. Endured so much for the freedom of his people...that eventually birthed the South Africa everyone wants to be part of!

Kudos to the 94yr old warrior who has continually fought for life... Even if you succumb now Tata, we know you'll soar high with the angels. If not, keep fighting it because we don't want you to leave yet. Your legacy speaks for itself and will forever transcend African generations. Thank You Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela

tareigns: BABA GOD,am nt trying to be a jerk bt pls,dis man don try reach na. If u want to take him pls take him. He has been through enough pains during his life time.

You talk as if nah God cause the pain or nah White man cause the pain for him life. Stop accusing God for evil inflicted by White people. The same White people who inflicted this pain on him and his country men for years, brought Christianity to Africa for us and We Africans continue to stupidly worship it. Most of us are very Stup$id with lack of ability to reason and think critically. Don't know what is wrong with us.

Now let me address some issues. Why is Mandela made to look like a hero and Mugabe and many other opponents of evil against black nations made to look like villains? To most Africans they are very naive and oblivious about this. Mandela, as many students of history will tell you, never helped the Blacks in South Africa. Yes he championed the cause for the black liberation but when he became president, he sold his people and continued the white agenda. That's why every media in the world always sing praises to his name. Why? He kowtowed to the masters. Had he challenged the white ruling class and continue the black agenda when he came to office, he would have been rubbished, caricatured and destroyed like Mugabe. Go and ask the blacks in South Africa, they are still in wretched condition since the black liberation movement. White still control 80% of their economy.
